Amphidromy is a diadromous life history pattern, common in tropical and subtropical freshwater caridean shrimps, in which adults live, breed and spawn small-sized embryos in freshwater but have extended larval development (ELD) in marine waters. Most completely freshwater species spawn large embryos with either direct or abbreviated larval development (ALD). An important benefit of amphidromy is dispersal among river systems via marine larvae, which increases their access to alternative habitats. Thus, amphidromous species have much broader geographic distributions than closely related completely freshwater ones with ALD. ALD and freshwater ELD species appear to have evolved from amphidromous species with marine ancestors. Delivery of larvae to the sea in many amphidromous species is accomplished by upstream hatching and river drift of larvae to the sea. In other species, the females themselves apparently migrate down to marine waters to spawn. After development, the postlarvae must find a river mouth and migrate upstream to the adult habitat. Migrations occur at night, with juveniles swimming or crawling along the river or stream bank. Larvae are released during the wet or flood season of the year, while juvenile migrations take place during the dry or low-flow season. -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 58(3): 709-729, 1996 THE GENUS PARAXIOPSIS DE MAN, WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW SPECIES FROM THE WESTERN ATLANTIC (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA: AXIIDAE) Brian Kensley ABSTRACT The axiid shrimp genus Paraxiopsis De Man is reinstated, and separated from Eutricho- cheles Wood Mason on the basis of five characters. Nine species are assigned to Paraxiopsis, two from the Pacific and seven from the western Atlantic. Five of the latter are previously undescribed: P. foveolata from the eastern Gulf of Mexico; P. gracilimana from South Car olina to Tobaga, Belize, and the Gulf of Mexico; P. granulimana from Trinidad and the Florida Shelf; P. hispida from the Yucatan; and P. spinipleura from Belize and the Florida Keys. The type species, P. brocki De Man from the Indo-Pacific is redescribed, as is P. defensus Rathbun from the Caribbean. The species range from the intertidal to 95 m, in a variety of habitats including coral buttresses, coarse rubble, sand and mud. Axiid shrimps are, almost without exception, cryptic in habit. Consequently, little is known of their biology, while the taxa are often poorly represented in museum collections. Excluding the five new species described here, 14 species of axiids have been recorded in the tropical western Atlantic, of which the four species of Eiconaxius Bate, 1888, are all deepwater sponge commensals. Only Coralaxius nodulosus (Meinert, 1877) and Axiopsis serratifrons (A. Milne Ed wards, 1873) have been observed alive, and even for these species there is only scant biological information. The material described here has been accumulated over the course of several years, often incidental to collecting efforts for fishes and other crustacean groups, or as part of surveys of the shallow continental shelf. -

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el rendimiento reproductivo de hembras de C. caementarius 2 Departamento de Biología, Micro- biología y Biotecnología. Facultad mantenidas con alimento natural. Se empleó 24 hembras inmaduras (5,2 cm y 2,0 g), acondicionadas en ocho de Ciencias. Universidad Nacional acuarios (45 L) y alimentadas durante dos meses de acuerdo a cada tratamiento, con pota (Dosidicus sp.), del Santa. Av. Universitaria s/n Urb. almeja (Semele solida), poliqueto (Pseudonereis sp.) y con alimento balanceado. El rendimiento reproductivo Bellamar. Nvo. Chimbote. Ancash. Perú. Primer y segundo par de patas caminadoras con quela o tenaza terminal; el segundo par mucho más grande que el primero y una de las patas de mayor tamaño que la opuesta (Jara 1994). El segundo par de patas del macho es distinto del de la hembra; la mayor anchura de los extremos del segundo segmento abdominal, en proporción a la longitud del abdomen y la relación cefalotoráxica, nos dan la evidencia de un dimorfismo sexual (Castro 1966). El espécimen macho más grande medido en la Colección del Instituto de Zoología (UACh) alcanzó a 59 mm, mientras que el más grande registrado en la literatura alcanzó 67 mm (Jara 1994). Rasgos distintivos ASPECTOS REPRODUCTIVOS: La mayor parte de los ejemplares migran activamente hacia la desembocadura de los ríos para la reproducción , liberar las larvas en los estuarios o zonas del potamon. En cuevas los machos tienen varias hembras que fertilizan después de la muda. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. The Crustacea Decapoda (Brachyura and Anomura) of Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, with special reference to the obligate commensals of branching corals 1 John S. GARTH Allan Hancock Foundation Univer5ity of Southern California 2 and Eniwetok Ma rine Biological Laboratory Introduction The brachyuran decapod crustaceans of the Marsh all Islands have been reviewed by Balss (1938) and by Miyake (1938, 1939). These reports stem from the German and Jap anese occupations, respect ively, the former being the result of the Pacific Exp edition of Dr. Sixten Bock, 1917-1918, the latter th e result of the Micronesia Expedition of Prof. Te iso Esaki, 1937-1938. According to Fosberg (1956, p. 1), J aluit Atoll was the headquarters of both the German and the Japan ese administrations, a fact that accounts for the preponderanc e of record s from the southern Marshall Isl ands. Additional coverage of the southern Marsh alls was provided by the 1950 Arno Atoll Expedition of the Coral Atoll Program of the Pa cific Science Board, the decapod crustaceans collected by Dr. R. W. Hiatt having been reported by Holthuis (1953). Carcinologically speak ing, the northern Marshalls ar e less well known, collections having been made only at Likieb Atoll by both Dr. Bock and Prof. Esaki and at Kwajalein Atoll by Prof . Esaki alone. Except for the shrimps, reported by Chace (1955), the extensive collections made in connection with Operation Crossroads in 1946- 1947, which includ ed Bikini, Rongelap, Rongerik, and Eniwetok atolls (Fosberg, 1956, p. 4), are at the U.S. Nationa l Museum awaiting stud y. -
