Hij doorliep daar de Rijks Hogere Burgerschool, waarvan zijn vader directeur was, en legde daarna het aanvullende staats examen gymnasium B af. Na enige aarzeling tussen de klassieke letteren en de wiskunde koos hij de laatste als zijn universitaire studie. Op 1 juni 1918 promoveerde hij op een proefschrift "Een bijdrage tot de kennis van het platte schroevenvlak". Na een korte periode van werkzaamheid als leraar in Groningen (1915-'18) werd hij in 1919 leraar in de wiskunde en de natuur kunde aan de Rijks Hogere Burgerschool Willem II te Tilburg, een betrekking, die hij tot 1953 vervulde. Het bleek al spoedig, dat Dijksterhuis in wezen niet gekozen had tussen zijn belangstelling in de letteren en die in de wiskunde, maar beiden trouw zou blijven. In 1924 verscheen van zijn hand "Val en Worp. Een bijdrage tot de geschiedenis der mechanica van Aristoteles tot Newton". Zoals in de voorrede dankbaar erkend wordt, was hij tot deze studie vooral geïnspireerd door het werk van de Franse fysicus en wetenschapshistoricus Pierre Duhem. Wat hij - ook als jonge man zeer bescheiden - niet vermeldt, is, dat hij bewust een correctie op Duhem's methode aangebracht had. -

Chapter 2 Telecardiology Among the clinical disciplines, the widest use of telemedicine in the twentieth century has been in cardiology. The main reason for this is the necessity of urgent diagnosis of acute pathology of the cardiovascular system, especially with the involvement of high-level experts. At the other hand, telemetry of electrocardiosignals (ECS or ECG) for the remote interpretation and analysis was most consistent with the technical capabilities of electrical engineering in the last century. 2.1. Early Stage of Telecardiology (Contributing co-authors O. Stadnyk, M. Karlinska) Most researchers consider March 22, 1905 as the birthday of telemedicine. On this day, in The Netherlands, Wilhelm Einthoven, professor of physiology at Leiden University, and Professor Johannes Bosscha, Director of the Delft University of Technology, transmitted a regular electrocardiogram Fig. 2.1. Wilhelm Einthoven and Johannes Bosscha and phonocardiogrammes via an protected telephone cable at a distance of about 1500 meters from the University Hospital to the physiological laboratory at W. Einthoven’s house (Fig. 2.1) (Einthoven, 1906). Einthoven is considered one of the main founders of electrocardiography. For this invention he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1924. The basic technological component of Einthoven's electrocardiograph was the so-called string galvanometer. It was a very accurate and qualitative, but rather cumbersome device mounted in his home laboratory (Fig. 2.2 - 2.3). As technology developed, the ECG registrations of patients with various diseases became of greater interest, but to move the string galvanometer to the clinic was an almost impossible task. Then Professor Johannes Bosscha suggested using a remote broadcasting, which enabled to examine patients in the clinic with a device that was physically located at a distance of 1.5 kilometres (Barold, 2003; Einthoven, 1906; Miami Fire Department’s First 57 Paramedic Program 1967; Taylor et al. -

In onze complexe samenleving staat de scheikunde er niet goed op. ‘Het vak scheikunde is uit de gratie’ schrijft een bekende journalist. ‘Om eerlijk te zijn heb ik in het verleden wel eens verteld dat ik Frans studeerde’ zegt een scheikundig student, om vragen te voorkomen. In 1993 bestaat de Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging, KNCV, negentig jaar. Er zijn in Nederland sinds het vak tot ontwikkeling kwam zeer belangrijke prestaties op scheikundig gebied verricht. Er zijn perioden geweest waarin er voor deze prestaties een brede waardering bestond, dit was misschien het sterkst het geval in de jaren vijftig-zestig van onze eeuw. In de tegenwoordige tijd bestaat ten aanzien van de scheikunde en al het chemisch handelen veelal een sfeer van wantrouwen. In brede kring wordt gedacht dat de scheikunde, de scheikundigen, veroorzakers van, vooral milieugerelateerde, problemen zijn. Er wordt daarbij vergeten dat dezelfde mensen die ervan worden verdacht de veroorzakers van deze problemen te zijn in hoge mate er toe bijdragen dat (milieu)problemen kunnen worden voorkómen, opgespoord en opgelost. -

KG Rotherstraße 21, 10245 Berlin Deutschland www.ernst-und-sohn.de CHAPTER 5 The beginnings of a theory of structures Like all roads in the Roman Empire led to Rome, so we can trace strength of materials back to Galileo’s Discorsi of 1638. Historically, statics and strength of materials had to be found in theory of structures. The author’s interest in Galileo stems not only from Bertolt Brecht’s famous play The Life of Galileo, but also from an in-depth study of the philosophical history of mechanics writings of Pierre Duhem, Eduard Jan Dijksterhuis, Michael Wolff, Gideon Freudenthal and Wolfgang Lefèvre. In 1980, while still a student, the author purchased a copy of Franz Joseph Ritter von Gerstner’s scientific life’s work, the three-volume Handbuch der Mechanik (manual of mechanics) with its magnificent copperplate engravings. An intensive study of this publication and the work of Johann Albert Eytelwein led to the author’s view that these two personalities rounded off the preparatory period of structural theory, but in the end were unable to formulate the programme of structural theory. That was to be left to Navier, who in 1826 fused together statics and strength of materials to form theory of structures. And that’s where the history of the- ory of structures, in its narrower sense, really begins. The results have been published by the author in the yearbook Humanismus und Technik edited by Prof. -

Simon Stevin (-) was one of the leading scholars of his day. As a scientist Charles van den Heuvel and engineer, he carved a career for himself in the breakaway Dutch Republic of ‘De Huysbou’ the Northern Low Countries, developing theoretical innovations in mathematics and physics as well as practical innovations in civil engineering and military tech- A reconstruction of an unfi nished treatise on nology. Less well known is the project that Stevin worked on during the last twenty years of his life, a treatise on architecture and town planning. The earliest mention architecture, town planning and civil engineering of Huysbou occurs in the fi rst volume of Stevin’s work on mathematics and other by Simon Stevin natural sciences, Wisconstighe Ghedachtenissen (‘Mathematical Memoirs’), published in . This book deals with Stevin’s unfi nished, and until now only partly revealed architectural treatise. A fi rst attempt has made to recreate the envisaged Huysbou as accurately as possible.
