THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus is the source of life and the only source of a cure in today’s gospel. After last week’s gos- pel in which the apostles experience fear in the boat, Jesus takes them a step further to experience the fact that only God has power over life and death. Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from death and He cures the woman with the hemorrhage that persisted for twelve years. This is the messianic divinity that Jesus wants His disciples to recognize. Jesus is God and we must look to Him for all our needs both physical and spiritual.
Over the past forty-three years I have witnessed both phenomena in today’s gospel. I have been with individuals who are dying – some as young as post-birth and others as old as in their 90’s. Death is always a loss and always an opportunity to turn our attention to Christ who can raise us from the dead. I have experienced death so often that I no longer have any fear of it. Instead, it has be- come a source of reflection and prayer that all people will use the experience to grow closer to the Lord. Then there are those who are chronically ill like the woman in the gospel. She represents those who are constantly reaching out for help. I have been involved with many chronically ill individuals both in counseling and in bedside encouragement. Illness brings about a loneliness that only our kind- ness and the Lord’s gentle touch can cure.
In all my years as a priest, I have loved parish life. There is no greater joy than becoming at- tached to a community of people like us at St. Thomas More Parish. It makes preaching so much easier when a priest knows the community. It makes relationships so much easier when a priest knows the community. I also love a good sense of humor. We need to laugh more often together and allow life to be just a little less overbearing. A smile goes a long way in today’s world. I am glad that I have had the privilege of sharing my smiles with you. Together we must strive to make this world more tolerable.
Finally, let us move past what has happened to us over the past year. Let us remember that God has an ultimate purpose in every situation that affects us. St. Thomas More will live on in you and in the hearts of all who have loved this parish. I will continue to love you and pray for you and I ask you to do the same for me. I have the privilege of being able to speak personally about the beauty and won- der I have found in this parish. To live and serve at Tommy More is a privilege and an honor that I can carry with me to heaven. Be proud and stand firm in the Lord!!! Many thanks to all of you for the last six years of my formal priesthood.
Love and blessings,
Msgr. Richard M. Zborowski

‘I die the king's faithful servant, but God's first.’ St. Thomas More
This past week we honored our patron Saint Thomas More (1477-1535) on his feast day, June 22. He was a close friend of King Henry VIII. As a judge, he was renowned for his incorruptibility and high ethical standards, which meant he was ap- pointed Lord Chancellor, the highest legal position at the time in England. When Henry VIII wanted to be granted a di- vorce from Catherine of Aragon, Thomas More opposed him.
He resigned the chancellorship and retired from public life. However, as he was a prominent figure, he was asked to take an oath to support the Act of Succession, which effectively repudiated the papal religious authority. He refused, was imprisoned in the Tower of London, was found guilty of high treason for denying the King’s supreme headship of the Church, sentenced to death and executed on 6 July 1535.
In 1929, G.K. Chesterton said that Thomas More “is important today, but he is not as important now as he will be in 100 years from today.” In 2021, we are nearing that 100 year mark and we can see how the dignity of marriage has been and continues to be attacked. The family is the bedrock of society and we need the intercession of our heavenly pa- tron more now than ever.
Chesterton probably pointed towards the martyrdom of Thomas More for religious freedom and being a model of in- tegrity and devotion. Our drawing today shows Thomas More and his family. The painting of this exact composition is lost, but this drawing survived. Drawn in 1527, this composition is seen as the earliest portrait conversation piece in Eng- lish painting/drawing. Portraits before would have depicted one person, head and shoulders, on a single canvas. hence, this 'conversation piece' which is a more informal group portrait depicting full length figures in a domestic set- ting, would have been very revolutionary at the time.
Thomas More is depicted in the center, with the engaged couple Anne Cresacre and his only son, John More, on either side of him. On the right of our painting are More's youngest daughter, Cecily Heron, and his eldest daughter, Margaret Roper. More's second wife, Alice, is kneeling on the extreme right.
