Michael Poulos VISITS TO HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS Our clergy are happy to visit. Call the parish office to arrange. Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More February 19th, 2017 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time The readings for the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time issue the divine directive: “Be holy!” Fulfilling this mandate is hard work enough, since it requires a deliberate and intentional standard of living difficult to achieve. Jesus extends this holiness command to include being “perfect.” The phrase heard at the beginning of today’s reading, “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy,” is the recurring theme of the Bible’s third book. Throughout their history, Israel’s purity become one of the defining characteristics of their ethnic and cultural identity, separating them from the many other nations of the world. Today’s reading touches upon an important prerequisite to holiness for the Israelites: do not hate or hold a grudge in your heart against any fellow Israelite. In the reading, we hear Jesus directly address this purity from Leviticus in stating, “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” Scholars have rightly noted that the “hate your enemy” phrase does not appear in the written text of Leviticus 19:18. It may be that Jesus is citing the oral version of the text that reflected Israel’s long-standing developing oral interpretation of the written law. Nonetheless, Jesus’ ongoing interpretation of the Mosaic law heard in the “Sermon on the Mount” continues to push the limits of the law to new levels. The same is true for his earlier injunction also heard in today’s reading: “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth [see Lv 24:19-20]. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.” Recall the context in which Matthew places Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:17): in redefining the parameters of the Jewish purity laws, Jesus is not abolishing or nullifying the law of ; rather, he is fulfilling it. Jesus is teaching his disciples that more is required of them than being “holy.” In order to follow Jesus, a must be “perfect”: “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect! Uniting Word & World, Dr. J. Scholz
