Title: What a Saint am I!: The Self-Canonization of Madame Jeanne-Marie Guyon in the Quietist Controversy of Seventeenth-Century France At the center of the heated Quietist Controversy in late seventeenth­ century France was Jeanne-Marie Guyon, whose writings and teachings on inner prayer were similar to those of recognized Catholic mystics. Unlike celebrated mystics, however, Mme Guyon expounded a doctrine which seemed to concentrate not only on holy indifference, but on herself as the sole mechanism by which others could attain union with God. A careful reading of the writings of Mme Guyon reveals a woman obsessed with herself -- her salvation, her martyrdom, her popularity, and her superiority. Such a description corresponds perfectly with the suggestions of her foremost persecutor, the bishop of Meaux, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, that she saw herself as a living saint, above and beyond the mystics of the past, more powerful than the priests of the present, and positively ensured that she was the true bride of Christ who would rule beside him in the future. In order to make sense of Mme Guyon's interpretation of herself, this thesis seeks to unite various aspects of her writings and personality, including the imagery of the Book of Revelation, sainthood, mysticism, sensuality in reference to Jesus, and persecution. Ultimately I suggest that her writings sought to prove her own assertion that she was the woman of the apocalypse, the highest level of saint in the Glorious Orders. Mme Guyon's autobiography appears to be a consciously constructed hagiography to serve in fortifying this image of herself. This self-canonization, compounded by the awkward imitation of accepted mystical doctrine, was central to Mme Guyon's condemnation in the French Quietist debates of the late seventeenth century. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This master's thesis is the result of my first graduate class in French history, a seminar on the seventeenth century offered in Spring of 1996. I first found Mme Guyon's name as I was thumbing through the index of Pierre Goubert's Louis XIV and Twenty Million Frenchmen desperately looking for a term-paper topic. Her name lept out from the page, and even though I had no idea who she was, I was convinced that she would be the focus of a great paper. By the Fall I had resigned myself to the revelation that, like she had seduced so many at Louis XIV's court with her charismatic manner, I too had fallen victim to Jeanne Guyon's seductive personality. My thesis topic was settled. This thesis and all of my graduate work at Portland State University was made possible by the generous support and encouragement of my advisor, Professor Thomas Luckett. There are not enough words in English or French to describe my gratitude to him. No matter how quiet, how shy, or how loud and outspoken I was, Professor Luckett was always patient and understanding. I feel so honored, and so lucky, to have been able to work with such an outstanding scholar and historian. Many of his forefathers were saints. 1 Jeanne Guyon A new prophetess undertook to revive the Guide of Molinas, and the prayer that it teaches. She is full of this esprit, this mysterious woman of the apocalypse; it is this child that is within her. This woman's work is not finished .... 2 Jacques-Benigne Bossuet History best remembers Jeanne-Marie Bouviers de La Mothe Guyon as the degenerate bud from whom blossomed the unfortunate Quietist controversy. This event is well-known to French historians, as it involved a heated exchange between two of the most influential French churchmen of the seventeenth century: Jacques-Benigne Bossuet (1627-1704) and Franc;ois de Salignac de La Mothe-Fenelon (1651-1715). What continues to stimulate debate and controversy among scholars is the personality of Mme Guyon herself - some see her as a true prophet whose words are to be accepted and admired for their painful honesty; to others she is nothing more than an ignorant, greedy, and self­ absorbed woman whose meddling in Church affairs deservedly landed her in jail. The very presence of her strong, almost overbearing personality jumps out from the page as though three hundred years has done nothing to dilute its strength. She is a powerful force, someone to be reckoned with in any generation, and her superficial message is hypnotically attractive - anyone can achieve some form of spiritual union with God. Sanctification comes not from attending mass, or weekly confessions, or even self­ mortification; instead, it comes only from losing oneself in quiet prayer with the Lord. Such a message, while not original by any means, proves a dangerous potion when mixed with her fantastic, charismatic personality. The overarching objective of this thesis is to examine Mme Guyon's role in the Quietist Controversy. is it really so simple to say, as many historians have done, that her famous and well-read tracts like The Short and Easy Method of Prayer (a translation of the French title Mayen court et tres facile de faire oraison) and Spiritual Torrents (Les spirituals torrents) represent an elaboration of themes and methods suggested by earlier mystics such as St.

Alexander Yelchaninov This presentation is based on the research that I undertook for a book titled Imagine That… : Mental Imagery in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Private Devotion, published in paperback in February of 2009 with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco. The work is an analytical comparison of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox attitudes toward mental imagery. In this presentation, I wish to focus specifically on the Orthodox tradition of prayer. * * * Eastern Orthodoxy displays a great degree of uniformity in following a path of stillness of thought and silence of mind to achieve the prayer of heart in private devotion. Saint John Climacus writes in The Ladder (28:19) that “the beginning of prayer consists in chasing away invading thoughts…” (285) The mind is to be freed from all thoughts and images and focused on the words of prayer. Further in the chapter on prayer (28), St. John instructs not to accept any sensual images during prayer, lest the mind falls into insanity (42; 289); and not to gaze upon even necessary and spiritual things (59; 292). Unlike some forms of Roman Catholic spirituality, the Orthodox Tradition does not encourage the use of mental imagery. In fact, it almost appears to forbid sensory imagination during prayer altogether. In the words of one of the contemporary Orthodox elders, Abbot Nikon (Vorobyev) (1894-1963), “that, which sternly, decisively, with threats and imploring is forbidden by the Eastern Fathers—Western ascetics strive to acquire through all efforts and means” (424).

    Introduction (1) In 1675 the Spanish priest Miguel de Molinos published at the age of forty-seven a concise and simple introduction to the art of interior prayer, or contemplation: the Spiritual Guide, “which disentangles the soul and leads it by the interior way to perfect contemplation and the rich treasure of interior peace.”1 On its first pages it carried the approbation of some of the most notable clerics of various orders, and was an immediate success, passing through several editions in the original Spanish, and being translated into Latin, French, Italian, and English. For ten years the Spiritual Guide was immensely popular, and Molinos himself enjoyed huge popular veneration as a spiritual director and teacher. Twelve years’ residence had made him a Roman citizen, and few would recall his arrival from Valencia at the age of thirty-five as a champion for the canonization of one Francisco Simón, whose case foundered. By this time Molinos had friends in high places, including Pope Innocent XI, who secured apartments for him in the papal palace. Spectacularly, however, ten years following publication of the Spiritual Guide, and after a protracted heresy trial, lasting two years, for his alleged illuminist views, he was found guilty on sixty-eight charges, and condemned to life in prison, where he SAMPLEdied nine years later. We do not have a great deal of information regarding Molinos’ beliefs, apart from the Spiritual Guide itself, and a second hitherto unpublished book titled the Defence of Contemplation, his rebuttal of the charges of heresy. Additionally, there is the Bull Coelestis Pastor, which sets out the so- called sixty-eight heretical “propositions”.

Rhoades “It was 161 years ago today, on February 11, 1858, that the Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to the 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto of Massabielle near the village of Lourdes in France. It was the first of 18 apparitions. At this first apparition, Bernadette first saw a light, then she saw a young lady who she said was “beautiful, more beautiful than any other.” She did not know it was the Virgin Mary. By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

ABSTRACT This study examines Tertullian’s references to the New Testament outside the Gospels, in order to determine whether he was citing from a Greek or Latin copy of these writings. A new collection of these references was undertaken and is explained in the Appendix. The conclusion of the analysis is that Tertullian was quoting the New Testament writings using Greek exemplars and translating anew in most instances. Tertullian was one of the first Christians to have undertaken such translation work. It is proposed that Tertullian was participating in and influenced by a broad cultural-linguistic movement called the Second Sophistic. Latin writers like Cicero, Quintilian, Varro, and Apuleius were also participants, and their translation of Greek works into Latin likely formed Tertullian to become a literary translator.

The intellectual tra- dition and moral teachings of the Catholic Church would infuse the life of the College, illuminating all learning as well as the community within which learning takes place. Just as the Faith would lie at the heart of Thomas Aquinas College, so too would a beautiful chapel stand at the head of its campus. With the exhibition entitled Dal visibile all’indicibile. Crocifissi ed esperienza mistica in Angela da Foligno (Foligno, October 6th, 2012 – January 6th, 2013) and the publication of the catalogue, relations between Angela’s visions and her artistic context have been examined in greater depth. However, despite the excellent essays included in the book, there is still lacking a theoretical basis to explain Angela's devotional relationship with some images and, in particular, her reception of them. The main aim of these pages is therefore to develop that theoretical background and to interpret from such a basis the events that occurred in Assisi in front of the so-called “vetrata degli angeli” (the stained glass window of the angels). 1 This article forms part of a larger research project partly funded by the Bibliotheca Mystica et Philosophica Alois M. Haas Research Group (2009SGR1551, granted by the “Departament d’Economía i Conexeiment de la Generalitat de Cataluya”), which allowed me to undertake a research trip to Assisi to work with the manuscript traditionally known as A (Assisi Codex, Biblioteca Comunale 342), which contains the most reliable version of Angela’s writings.
