Made in Our Image: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in China Do you still think that robotics and Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and the premise of such futuristic films as “Robocop”, the “Terminator” and “Matrix” franchises and such humanoid robot-centred TV series such as “Humans” are just the stuff of science fiction? Think again. In China, the future may already be here. ecently, a remarkable human-like robot was introduced in Hefei, east China, global news media reported. Created by University of Science and Technology of China experts, the fascinating humanoid “Jia Jia,” dubbed “the robot goddess,” is a highly interactive cyborg thatR communicates with its natural eye movements and speech intelligently synchronized with its lip movements. Jia Jia caused a sensation when she made her debut this past April 2016, unveiled by Chinese researchers as the first of her kind in China. Attractive and looking somewhat disturbingly lifelike, Jia Jia is programmed to recognize human interaction and respond through speech and movement. Researchers said that after three years of research and work with very limited resources, they were able to make Jia Jia look very much like a human, but were not able to recreate natural eye and mouth movement. They went on to say that they hope to soon add facial expression, as well as a deeper level of human interaction. The team say they don’t have plans to mass produce her, only to make her smarter and more lifelike.

During the demonstration during her debut, Jia Jia immediately responded to human interaction, but in a stiff, slow, and robotic-looking manner. Still, CNET reported that Jia Jia is the “most lifelike robot ever made.” Researchers and developers at USTC have admittedly come a long way since they created the first interactive general purpose service robot, KeJia, in 2013. KeJia, who now serves as an interactive shopping mall guide in Hefei, actually resembles a department store mannequin on wheels. But both robots share the same slow, mechanical, dulcet tone when interacting with humans.

According to a Yahoo report, when spoken to, Jia Mark1 is an extremely impressive feat of technology. Welcome to the “affordable” Tesla Model 3 that 115,000 people supposedly put deposits on before the highly secretive car was even shown to the public at a launch party at SpaceX, Tesla’s sister company headquartered in Hawthorne, California.

From the side and back, the sedan Model 3 looks like a Model S with a very tall roof and a bobbed nose and tail. Up front, it has a blunt upturned snout that evokes the original Tesla Roadster as well as the new, sealed-up prow of the Model X. It is genetically linked to all of its ancestors— both in the styling and in the many pounds of lithium-ion batteries packed into the floor (also, all but the Roadster have front and rear trunks). It owes a heavy debt to the other cars in Tesla’s lineup.

Its single instrument is a billboard-like 15-inch touchscreen glowing in the dash, it accelerates with the nearly silent rush that cheetahs use to get their lunch, and it will start at a “very affordable” US$35,000 when it first reaches customers, which at this moment is said to be in 2018.

The base model will have a 215-mile range, seat five, two wheel drive and will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds. The Model 3 will have standard and optional drive systems, Speaking to the Model 3’s standard drive configuration, it will use a single electric motor (as does the Model S sedan) powering the rear wheels; the optional setup will also mimic that on the Model S, which is to say it’ll use an extra electric motor to also power the front wheels.

While the car seats five, the back seat the Model 3 is snug for the knees, mainly because the underfloor battery pack necessitates a high cabin floor and also because the front seats are thick thrones. The tall side glass means there’s plenty of headroom, however, and an enormous panoramic rear glass that curves over the rear passengers’ heads helps give the cabin the feel of airy spaciousness. Up front, the driver faces a dashboard that's completely

bare save for the oversize, horizontally oriented touchscreen; the speedometer readout is in the upper left-hand corner.

There also will be a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version. As of this writing, less than a month since its launch, the Model 3 has already received more than 400,000 advance orders from around the globe.

Cantonese cuisine does not only consist of Yum Cha. When Cantonese restaurants are prevalent in the city where it originates, patrons are happy to find creativity in the dishes. Local Cantonese cuisine giant Ping Sheng Group owns a series of chain restaurants serving authentic top-notch Cantonese favors. It recently introduced a sister brand - Hsiao Ping Sheng - which is with an additive character “Hsiao” literally meaning “small”. In contrast, the only restaurant of the brand actually offers close to 300 seats of the entire second floor in the Yijian Building in Jianshe 6 Malu. It targets young diners with an adventurous appetite and affinity for Cantonese dishes, which is the significance of “Hsiao”.

The new eatery features typical Cantonese fusion dishes on its menu. The allure of the menu is its vast variety and budget prices, immediately making it a highly sought after restaurant in town with typical long queues for seats. The restaurant’s interiors are dotted with icons of traditional Cantonese-residential Xiguan houses. The rustic designs simplify these components as abstract outlines of windows and sliding doors on the walls, at the same time retaining unique multi-color triangle bricks.

The importance of subtlety in fresh seafood and poultry are the golden rule of Cantonese culinary cooking. Pork, beef, chicken, fish and seafood are often the primary proteins with clear and natural flavors. Chefs in Hsiao Ping Sheng have a special culinary treatment for chicken - fry the fillets until medium cooked and put in a heated casserole. This way of cooking is the essence of Cantonese cuisine as the casserole can amplify the fragrance of meat mixing sauce. Don’t miss its signature dishes like Lettuce with Shrimp Sauce in Casserole and others which are prepared in a similar way.

Hot dishes in Hsiao Ping Sheng are mainly packed with grilled seafood, roasted meats, casserole series, home-made fries and spicy griddled dishes. If you are not adventurous enough to try animal organs, you can skip the chef’s recommendations of Simmered Pig’s Limbs with Black Garlic and Stewed Pork Colon with Radish. Just turn to the Barbecue Pork in Red Wine Sauce and Fried Okra with Shallot. Dim Sum and dessert lovers won’t be disappointed with the Pineapple bread, Custard Milk Bun and other bakeries. They are not too sweet and are a perfect match with a cup of Hong Kong-style milk tea.

My Shenzhen Colin Young General Manager, JW Marriott Shenzhen a foreign national who has been living and working in Shenzhen for the past eight years now, I proudly like to refer to myself as a “Shenzhener”. My Chinese friends may like to joke and refer to me as a Shenzhen “lao ren” but I think I’m still quite youngAs (laughs). However, I have witnessed firsthand over the years the changes and developments in Shenzhen; it’s really wonderful and refreshing to be in a city that’s growing, getting busier but is coping very well at the same time, with infrastructure developing at the right pace. Its trains, roads, highways, the airport…Shenzhen is barely 35 years old, so it’s a relatively young city; I say its growth has been very well planned. The government here understands that there is a need to balance change with preserving the environment and they’ve managed to protect the city’s greenery and made efforts to keep the city’s green corridors and open spaces, even with rapid changes happening.

Before I arrived in Shenzhen, all I really knew about the city was what I’d previously heard about Lowu district. A very busy, congested, very developed area. I thought that Lowu was Shenzhen, that was it. But when the opportunity with Marriott came up and I arrived in Shenzhen, I discovered that the city was in the process of re- inventing itself. A new financial district called Futian was coming up and that’s where the JW Marriott Shenzhen would be based. Coming here, driving along Shennan Boulevard and seeing all the buildings, the space…eight years ago, I could already see all the attention being invested here and to me, it was all very exciting to be a part of that growth.

Shenzhen is a tremendous place to do business. It is strategically located in the Pearl River Delta, a powerful hub for manufacturing but also for the financial and high technology industries, a stone’s throw of both Hong Kong and Guangzhou, just across the Pearl River from and Zhuhai. For such a huge country, China only has two stock exchanges; one is in Shanghai and the other one is here in Shenzhen, which showcases the importance of Shenhen to the financial industry. Tencent, Xiaomi, Huawei, Foxconn – they all have either headquarters or a significant presence here. There’s an atmosphere of creativity, innovation, research & development and design that’s being encouraged and promoted and that, in turn, attracts the right sort of brilliant talent and brains to come here. The city’s infrastructure is already solid, as mentioned earlier, and continues to improve. And the weather here in southern China is great, generally warm and sunny with mild winters. So Shenzhen offers a fantastic mix of all the right elements which make it conducive for business.

Having previously lived in Hong Kong for a number of years and now living in Shenzhen, when comparing Shenzhen to Hong Kong, I can say that in terms of quality of lifestyle, Shenzhen has improved by leaps and bounds. In a way, Shenzhen has learned from Hong Kong’s mistakes, where, even though Hong Kong still has space in its territory and other islands, its commercial and financial centers have been so heavily concentrated on a very, very tiny piece of land. Shenzhen has been able to plan its growth and distribute its population more evenly, so its people, the average person, can still enjoy more space and better quality of life. Of course, Hong Kong as an international city has had years of a head start, so for a foreigner, living and working in Hong Kong, getting around and doing things, is still relatively easier. The differences between Hong Kong and Shenzhen are starting to get smaller and smaller.

Some Shenzhen critics may refer to this city as a “cultural desert”, that there’s a lack of appreciation for culture and books, and to an extent, I agree, sometimes, access could be restricted. However, same as in Hong Kong, the resources in Shenzhen are there for libraries and bookstores, for books on culture and music and art…they are there. And just like in any city in the world, people just have to get out of their “comfort zones” and get out there and be adventurous. Sometimes, the best way to get out of your comfort zone is through food! 34 PAPER MAGAZINE supplement - Shenzhen Ren "my favourites"
