Una línea de investigación enfatizó la existencia de un conflicto real entre judíos y cristianos, hecho que habría derivado en la constitución de la literatura Adversus Iudaeos. En contraste, otra posición hizo hincapié en aspectos dis- cursivos, resaltando la necesidad cristiana de autodefinición en oposición a la matriz judía y confinando el antijudaísmo a cuestiones estrictamente textuales e identitarias distantes del contexto social inmediato. La figura de Gregorio Magno, gracias a la gran variabilidad textual que presenta su obra, otorga una herramienta fundamental a la hora de comprender las dinámicas del antijudaísmo cristiano. En este artículo se exploran todos los escritos gregorianos, mediante un estudio cualitativo y cuantitativo, poniéndose de releve en qué tipo de textos aparecen los topoi adversus Iudaeos y concluyendo que, al menos para el Papa entre el 590 y el 604, el antijudaísmo fue una cuestión estrictamente simbólica.     Die junge Mommsen Studentische Zeitschrift für Geschichtswissenschaften Bd. 2 Berlin, September 2020 www.junge-mommsen.de Vorwort Das Verfassen von schriftlichen Hausarbeiten bildet zweifelsfrei den Kern der in geschichtswissen- schaftlichen Studiengängen geforderten Studienleistungen. Doch nicht zuletzt auch aus Mangel an Musterbeispielen herrscht gerade zu Studienbeginn oft eine große Unklarheit darüber, was eine gelungene Hausarbeit denn eigentlich ausmacht. Einerseits wird das Erlernen der dafür notwen- digen Kompetenzen auf diese Weise von vornherein erschwert, andererseits bleibt somit auch im weiteren Verlauf des Studiums der Lernprozess weitgehend auf die eigenen Arbeiten beschränkt und das Potenzial, aus den Leistungen und Fehlern der Kommiliton*innen zu lernen, in dieser Hin- sicht ungenutzt. Um den Einstieg ins Studium zu erleichtern und den Blick auf die im Studium ver- fassten Arbeiten der Kommiliton*innen zu weiten, ist innerhalb der Fachschaftsinitiative Geschichte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin die Idee gereift, hervorragende Hausarbeiten frei und online verfügbar zu machen. Als ein schöner Nebeneffekt erreichen auf diese Weise studentische Arbeiten ein größeres Lesepublikum, die eigentlich zu schade für die Schublade sind. Nicht zuletzt wird Stu- dent*innen damit die Möglichkeit geboten, erste Erfahrungen im wissenschaftlichen Publizieren zu machen. Aus diesem Gedanken ist im Frühjahr 2019 der eigenständige und gemeinnützige Verein Die junge Mommsen e. V. hervorgegangen, der für die gleichnamige, jährlich erscheinende studen- tische Zeitschrift die Herausgeberschaft innehat. Die Erstausgabe ist schließlich im Sommer 2019 als E-Zeitschrift mit Open-Access auf dem Edoc-Server der HU erschienen. Um die in die Erstaus- gabe geflossene Arbeitszeit auch haptisch erfahrbar zu machen, ist zusätzlich zu Beginn des Win- tersemesters 2019/2020 eine Printversion mit einer Auflage von 350 Ausgaben erschienen, die an die Erstsemestler*innen verteilt wurde.

His presentations of their tenure in office and their virtues suggest that his position on political leadership corresponds with his general skepticism about political platforms and platitudes. Yet careful reading of his revision of Ambrose’s account of Emperor Theodosius’s public penance and reconsideration of the last five sections of his fifth book City of God—as well as a reappraisal of several of his sermons on the Psalms—suggest that he proposes a radical alternative to political conformity relevant to undergraduates’ conventional expectations of society’s progress and their parts in it. This dissertation examines his writings on virginity in the interest of illuminating the historical and social contexts of his teachings. Considering Ambrose’s treatises on virginity as literary productions with social, political, and theological functions in Milanese society, I look at the various ways in which the bishop of Milan formulated ascetic discourse in response to the needs and expectations of his audience. Furthermore, I attend to the various discontinuities in Ambrose’s ascetic writings in the hope of illuminating what kinds of ideological work these texts were intended to perform by the bishop within Milanese society and beyond.

  • The Definability of the Assumption
    THE DEFINABILITY OF THE ASSUMPTION IN the Encyclical Deiparae Virginis Mariae, dated May 1, 1946, Pope Pius XII announces that over a long period of years the Holy See has received many petitions to define the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin as a dogma of faith. These petitions, he says, were submitted by Cardinals and Patriarchs, by Archbishops and Bishops, by priests, religious, and a host of the laity, most notably of all by nearly two hundred Fathers of the Vatican Council. Since the beginning of his Pontificate, the Holy Father continues, he has been pondering the question whether it be right and fitting and opportune to comply with these petitions by an act of his supreme authority. With this in mind he has been offering up fervent prayers that the divine will may be made known to him. He now turns to the Bishops of the Catholic world with an appeal to assist him in gaining light from heaven. Following the example and the method of his predecessors, especially of Pius IX before he defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception,1 the Pope urgently requests that the Bishops inform him upon two points. First, with what devotion do their flocks honor Mary in the mystery of her Assumption? Secondly (and this is far more important), do the Bishops themselves, in their wise and prudent judgment, think that the Assumption can be defined; and do they, together with their clergy and people, desire the definition? It does not seem rash to regard this act of the Holy Father as the last step before a solemn definition.
