DO YOU LIKE A REAL CHALLENGE? DO YOU LIKE PLAYING CARDS? THEN TRY THE GAME OF SKAT!

Skat information source https://skatgame.net/index.html Skat is Germany's traditional card game for 3 or 4 players.

Combining elements of Bridge, Hearts, Euchre, Pinochle, and Poker, many say it is the most exciting card game in the world! Here is what Joseph Wergin in his book on Skat and Sheepshead says about the game: "Skat is, undoubtedly, the best of all card games, as it combines in a remarkable way the elements of both chance and skill. Although upon first exposure it may seem difficult, it is actually quite simple when the component parts are analyzed separately. Skat attracts dedicated card players because it requires them to utilize the full range of their card playing ability. Card addicts who have mastered the ordinary games will be delighted to discover the new challenges offered by this unique game." INTERESTED! The Shooting Group—a fun-loving group that meets every Monday evening (with the exception of holidays) from just after Labour Day in September until about the end of May. They have their own “Shooting Range” on the third floor where they use very sophisticated air rifles. Some own their own rifles but most use one of the Club rifles.

They hold two dances in the Clubhouse each year, the Schützenfest (Shooters Festival) in the spring and the Jägerball (Hunters’ Ball) in the fall. There is normally a summer picnic, usually in August, that no shooter wants to miss. The Group is also involved in a friendly competition with the Shooting Group of the Lorelei Club in Oshawa. This takes place every year and they alternate between having it in Oshawa and at their own Clubhouse.

New members, male and female, are always welcome. Afraid that the gun may be too heavy? No problem; you can use a “rest” for either standing or sitting. Like to give it a try? Just come to the Clubhouse any Monday evening and they will be pleased to let you have a “Go.” You will probably enjoy it; it is lots of fun.

For more information please contact the Schützenmeister (Shooting Master), Martin Pandel, at 613-862-5655 or [email protected]. or, you could leave your name and telephone number at the clubhouse at 613-822-0737 and the Manager will see that it is passed on. The Hofbräuhaus News Bienenstich – German Bee Sting Cake Bienenstich or Bee sting cake is a German dessert made of sweet yeast dough with a baked-on topping of caramelized almonds and filled with a vanilla custard, Buttercream or cream. The cake may have earned its name from its honey topping: according to one legend, a bee was attracted to it, and the baker who invented the cake was stung. Ingredients: For the Filling: 2 cups milk 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 tbsp flour 1 tbsp cornstarch 1 tsp vanilla 3/4 cup whipping cream

For the Base: 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 3/4 cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup milk 4 tbsp butter

For the Almond Topping: 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup butter 1 1/2 cup sliced or slivered almonds 4 tbsp whipping cream

Filling Preparation: 1. Heat the milk with the sugar until almost boiling. Stir to dissolve sugar and be careful to keep the heat at medium to low so that you don’t burn on the bottom. 2. Whisk the eggs together with the flour and cornstarch until smooth. 3. Temper the egg mixture by gradually adding about 1/2 a cup of the hot milk to the eggs, whisking constantly (otherwise you’ll end up with scrambled eggs). Then gradually stir the egg mixture into the rest of the milk in a thin stream, whisking constantly. 4. Keep stirring until mixture starts to thicken but do not let it boil. When it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, remove from heat and add vanilla extract. 5. Pour into a bowl. Stir a few times. Place plastic wrap over the custard, so that it is touching the custard while it cools (this prevents a skin from forming). 6. When ready to assemble the cake, whip the whipping cream until very stiff, but stop whipping before it becomes clumpy and starts to turn into butter. Stir 1/3 of the whipped cream into the cold custard. Fold the rest into the custard. Do not over mix. Base Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Line a 9-inch (22 cm) springform pan with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together until light and fluffy; add vanilla. 3. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; mix into the egg mixture. 4. Heat the milk and butter until very hot (not quite boiling). Add the hot milk/butter to the batter. 5. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Top with Almond Topping and allow to cool while preparing the filling.

Almond Topping: In a medium saucepan, heat together the butter and brown sugar and the whipping cream until it just comes to a boil (should be a light caramel color). Add the almonds. Spread onto the baked cake as even as you can (this is easiest while the cake is still warm and in the pan).

Assembling the cake: When the cake has cooled, remove cake from pan and slice in half crossways to make two layers. Place bottom layer cut side up on cake plate and spread with filling. Top with the second layer with the almond glazed side up. Refrigerate until time to serve.

The new German pastor at Ottawa’s Martin Luther Church, is Judith Kierschke.

(Pastor Demke has returned to Germany).

We are introducing Pastor Judith to you as the church is now open under Covid restrictions and safety measures of course, and they are doing Christmas services. Perhaps that´s interesting, but, you have to preregister online in advance.

You can do so by using this link. https://mlk-heiligabend-christmas_eve.eventbrite.ca If you have any questions, please let me know.

Church services are being conducted with a restriction of 24 seats (one household is considered a “seat”). Services are still at 9:30 a.m. for English, and 11:00 a.m. for German. For Christmas Eve there will be 3 German services and 2 English services by reservation only.

Safe and well wishes to you and your family during advent.

Our “AngloPrussian”name has several multiple meanings relating to the historical and geographical aspects of the hopyard. The hopyard is situated between Shawville (Québec), an area settled by Anglo immigrants and Ladysmith an area settled by Prussian immigrants both from the mid to late 19th century. Our name also recognizes the significance that the English and German culture’s had not only in the development of beer, but also in the growing and utilization of hops in beer. And finally our hopyard name, Anglo- Prussian, best exemplifies the ancestral background of its owners. http://angloprussianhops.ca/ https://www.facebook.com/Brauwerk-Hoffman-1731440386978493/?tn-str=k*F CHEF FRANZ HOEFLER - CATERING Specializing in catering plans for holiday parties & private events! General Store Publishing House | May 18, 2010 | Trade Paperback

This is a true story -- a rare, first-hand account of one soldier's experiences during the Third Reich. it is also a love story, for amid the strife and devastation of war, Albin Gagel found the love of his life. By 1943, it had been four long years since he had left his home in a small village in to begin what was supposed to be only two years' mandatory military service. Although a seasoned veteran of the Wehrmacht, nothing he had experienced during the Blitzkrieg across France, or even the siege of Leningrad, had prepared him for the horror and desperation that surrounded him during the Battle of Kursk, the biggest tank battle of World War II and the star of 's slow retreat from the Eastern Front. Now Albin was in the fight of his life. Any dreams he might have harboured about honour and glory had long since vanished. Political rhetoric meant nothing on the battlefield. Medals were just trinkets and would never equal the value of lives lost in their purchase. His world was reduced to the men in his company and the enemy that shadowed their every manoeuvre. Yet there was also Gisela -- his hope, his dream, his future -- if ever he could get out of Russia alive. A true story, captivating from start to finish, this account offers an uncommon insight into what most Germans really thought about Hitler and his regime, and it is not quite what the wartime newsreels portrayed or what post war Hollywood portrays. Doug Gagel’s book is a very well written, captivating, and an amazing read. This book is highly recommended by Max Bork, publisher The HBH News.

"The real-life stories told in this book will make you laugh, cry, and give you pause. They capture a snapshot of a moment in our lives, our history, and communities. Whether they were born in Canada or came to this wonderful country as immigrants ...... ", reads the foreword.

The 150 stories are excellent and beautiful written in a way, as if one is looking through a clear and freshly polished windowpane recognizing still a lingering past, but all the same visible, seen presently in the 150 stories, made possible by those splendid, sometimes funny, sad, full of surprises and rightfully interesting biographies, narratives as well as some beautiful poems. The book is composed in distinctive personal and stylish pragmatism.

The book is already truly a pearl of Canadian Literature. Information Women's Institute contact www.fwio.on.ca/ordinary-extraordinary

The Hofbräuhaus News THE EARLY INDUSTRY OF ONTARIO Examining the formative role played by German speaking settlers

This book is about the epic struggle for the fate of North America and the settlers that helped to build and sustain a colony far away from the motherland. It is a trip back in time into the vanishing history of early Ontario during the time of the epic struggle for the fate of North America, illustrated with previously unpublished photos and thorough historical records. The struggle for trade and prestige caused England and France to fight for the possession of the American continent. Britain’s Blue Water Policy was fighting the French on land in continental Europe between the years 1775 and 1815. By engaging Prussia, it forced France to divert considerable resources away from the colonial conflicts against Britain and later won by Britain.

The British prime minister William Pitt (1st Earl of Chatham) stated in the British House of Commons that “America was won in Germany”, referring to the Prussian war effort, which enabled Great Britain to keep her continental commitments limited while focusing on her “Blue Water Policy”, to successfully establish naval supremacy elsewhere – a vital historical point needing to be shared by all people.

Learn in this book, how settlers built an economy and helped to reduce the cost of maintaining a colony that was far away from England. This colonial war was the biggest war of the 18th century and is an important theater of the modern world. website: http://www.history-of-ontario.ca/

the Annual General Meeting of

Germania Club Pembroke

on Thursday, September 23, 2021

at the Germania Hall, 15 Bennett Street, Pembroke.

A social time begins at 6 pm followed by the meeting at 7.

Due to public health guidelines, we will be "screening" members at the door. Please be prepared to show your proof of Vaccine as you enter the building. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please reach out to President, Shannon Boucher, at [email protected] as we will be able to let you "attend" the meeting via Zoom.

Our Constitution calls for the AGM to be held during the first quarter of each year; however, due to COVID-19, none has been held since March of 2019.

If you have not updated your membership as required to be eligible to vote, you may do this at the hall before the meeting on September 23.

We urge you to participate in this meeting. As 2020 would have been an election year, the task of choosing those to lead the club going forward will be on the agenda of this meeting. The Nominating Committee is proposing a full slate of officers to the meeting for approval; however, additional nominations for each of the positions will be accepted from the floor.

COVID-19 precautions including wearing of masks and social distancing will be observed.

NOTICES OF MOTION

The board is proposing two amendments to the Constitution for approval.

1) Section 10.1 of By-law #10 Membership Meetings will be expanded to read:

The Annual General Meeting will be held during the first quarter of each year except when health regulations and/or other mandated restrictions prevent it from being held during that time. In such an event, the board will postpone the meeting to a suitable time.

1 2) In By-law #12 Rights and Obligations of the Board under a new heading Absenteeism a new section will be added and will read:

A Board member who does not attend or participate in three (3) consecutive meetings may be relieved of their position. If a formal written request for a leave of absence, or a letter of explanation stating the reason for their absence(s), is presented to the Board, further action will be at the discretion of the Board.

4 23rd Annual Christkindlmarkt

Christkindlmarkt is back!

We are excited about plans to present an in-person version of Christkindlmarkt for 2021.

Since regulations responding to COVID-19 are always subject to change, plans are still somewhat tentative. However, we have chosen new dates: Friday, November 12 and Saturday, November 13 (no Sunday opening this year).

The layout of the show will reflect social distancing requirements, and numbers of shoppers will be limited according to the capacity deemed allowable at the time. We anticipate that masking will be required. We will comply with any other regulations applicable to Meeting and Event Spaces at that time. This could include recording vendors, volunteers, and visitors on a contact list and/or proof of vaccination.

We will likely be missing some of our usual attractions such as the children’s craft area and visits with Santa. However, we will do the best we can within the parameters available to us at the time and hope that by November of 2022 we can proceed full tilt with our 25th Annual Christkindlmarkt!

Stay tuned for further details. You can check the Christkindlmarkt Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/christkindlmarktpembroke or the Germania Club Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/936047119765767 , or the website at www.germaniapembroke.ca to keep abreast of details as they are confirmed.
