Citibank estimated earlier this year that there were already two thirds of a tril- lion dollars worth of con- struction projects under- way in the UAE. That was before Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al- Maktoum unveiled models of the Mall of the World, a glassed-in city complete with an air-conditioned Times Square and Oxford Street and Earth’s biggest indoor theme park. But beneath the soaring cranes and the glass and steel domes, all is not well for builders, who have found massive amounts of work but profit margins squeezed and developers slow to pay bills. And that means some of the glam- orous new mega-projects may fall well behind schedule. The UAE is recov- ering strongly from the 2008-2009 financial crisis which battered its real estate market. • Madrid Close In
PREVIEW ISSUE FOUR – 24TH APRIL 2012 MADRID CLOSE IN REAL TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE EL CLASICO AND CLOSE IN ON THE SILVERWARE After a poor week for both sides in Europe, Real and Barca were desperate to grab a win against their biggest rivals on a dramatic, rain-lashed Saturday night at the Nou Camp. It was Real that grabbed the vital win and probably clinched the La Liga title. Los Merengues went ahead through German midfielders Sami Khedira and were comfortable for long periods, but Barca’s Chilean substitute Alexis Sánchez equalised with just 20 minutes remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo’s clinical strike just three minutes later settled the game with Madrid now seven points clear, with only four games remaining. Madrid coach José Mourinho named an very attacking team and his side began the better. Ronaldo’s early header from a corner brought a superb flying save from goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. His opposite number Iker Casillas was then quickly off his line when full-back Dani Alves dispossessed Sergio Ramos. The game was being played at a fearsome pace and French striker Karim Benzema brought the best out of Valdés again. Barca thought they had gone front when Alves had the ball in the net after a Cristian Tello run, but the youngster had been flagged offside. • Regaining Livelihoods for Pastoralist and Nomadic Communities in Sudan
REGAINING LIVELIHOODS FOR PASTORALIST AND NOMADIC COMMUNITIES IN SUDAN West Kordofan State has been affected by the continuing war in South Kordofan, the Darfur conflict and the civil war in South Sudan. The secession of South Sudan worsened the predicament of nomads in the area, as movements to the country were blocked. As a result, animals find themselves concentrated in a narrow area with limited resources during the dry season. Diseases that are preventable by vaccination are still considered major threats to animal production. Taking into account the lack of veterinary services in the area for a number of years, which has led to the spread of dangerous transboundary animal diseases, West Kordofan is considered a serious focus for the spread of diseases, undermining Sudan’s role as an important livestock-exporting agent in the region. In this context, the project provided an opportunity to build the capacity of both veterinarians and veterinary institutions. ©FAO/Albert Gonzalez Farran WHAT DID THE PROJECT DO? KEY FACTS Animal health services were upgraded and major animal Contribution diseases controlled through the provision of vaccination and USD 500 000 treatment services, training of veterinarians and community animal health workers and the promotion of disease Duration surveillance and veterinary diagnostic capabilities in West October 2014 – September 2017 Kordofan State.
