PRESS FILE OPERA LA VESTALE GASPARE SPONTINI Alessandro de Marchi & Eric Lacascade 13, 15, 17, 20, 22 October 2015 20:00 25 October 2015 15:00 CIRQUE ROYAL / KONINKLIJK CIRCUS Opéra en trois actes, version française Livret de Victor-Joseph Etienne de Jouy Premiere Salle Montsansier, Paris, 15/12/1807 NEW PRODUCTION I – INTRODUCTION WITH BIOGRAPHIES THE FLAMES OF THE VESTAL ALTAR SET THE SCORE ALIGHT Since La Vestale, not a note of music has been written that wasn’t stolen from my scores!’ Gaspare Spontini was himself aware of how innovative and influential his score was. He turned opera in a new direction by conceiving the whole score on the basis of a compelling dramatic conception involving naturalistic effects, orchestration, and musical form, thereby pointing the way for such opera composers as Rossini, Wagner, Berlioz, and Meyerbeer. As a grand opera it was ahead of its time and was full of spectacular scenes showing a Vestal Virgin’s forbidden love for a Roman general; it made Spontini the most important composer of the Napoleonic period. Here directing his first opera, the French stage director Éric Lacascade focuses on a highly topical subject: ‘More than passionate love, what is at stake in this opera is the liberation of a woman who frees herself from the power of religious authority.’ COMPOSER & WORK Born in 1774 in Italy, Gaspare Spontini (1774-1851) imposed a new style to French music, mixing his Neapolitan inspiration to the genre of French lyric tragedy and thus creating what may be termed as Grand Historic Opera. The Italian composer, who became French in 1817, began a brilliant career in Rome and Venice after his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Naples.

  • Curriculum Vitae Update Spring 2012
Edwin Andereck Cover page for Curriculum Vitae update Spring 2012 My teaching interests and responsibilities at Luther are primarily collaborative, in that I teach 5 ½ of my six course load equivalents in one on one contact with approximately 28 students through applied voice lessons. This spring I have worked with eight of those students in preparations for their individual degree recitals or full senior recitals in anticipation of graduate school studies in music. As head of voice and opera I am responsible for coordinating and facilitating the Brudos Family Prize in Opera Performance, a high profile annual auditions and a recital with the donors, Al and Sally Brudos, in attendance. That scholarship is in its eleventh year, and students from my voice studio have been winners six of those years. Each week the students in my studio meet together for a voice class/seminar in which selected performances are critiqued by peers in the class and work is done by the performer in front of the class. The rest of my faculty load is taken by teaching a half course (2 credits) survey of vocal literature for voice. The two non-required vocal literature courses, Mus 267 and Mus 268, are taught in alternating years in the spring, and afford me the opportunity of engaging the students in conversation concerning poetry (in English, German, Italian, Spanish, and French), compositional styles, great recorded performances, and historical and cultural perspective. There is a seven page writing assignment that is primarily subjective in nature, but formal in writing style, that provides students opportunity to practice writing skills.

  • Enea Scala Is Now Considered a Reference Name in the Belcanto Baritenor Repertoire
Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Sicilian tenor with a rich and extensive voice, remarkable scenic qualities and an extremely versatile repertoire, Enea Scala is now considered a reference name in the Belcanto baritenor repertoire. After graduating from classical studies, he studied singing at the Conservatory of Bologna and later he specialized with Fernando Cordeiro Opa with whom he is still working. Since his debut in Bologna in 2006 he has ranged from Mozart (Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, La finta giardiniera) to brilliant Rossini, the Italian Belcanto, works such as Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, L'heure espagnole, L’amico Fritz, Die Fledermaus, La Juive/Leopold to get to his first Verdi titles (Falstaff and Traviata). In the belcanto repertoire beyond Bellini (Sonnambula, Zaira, Puritani, Adelson e Salvini) he is particularly interested in exploring the vast Donizetti’s repertoire (from Don Pasquale, Elisir, Convenienze teatrali to Caterina Cornaro, Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria Stuarda, Le Duc d'Albe). A close relationship links him to Rossini: after a debut in the brilliant genre (Italiana, Barbiere, Cenerentola, Il viaggio a Reims/Belfiore, Pietra del paragone) and the experience in Guillaume Tell (both as Arnoldo/Arnolde and Roudi) he reached now his repertoire of choice, starting with Armida/Rinaldo, later with Ermione/Pilade e Pirro and recently with Tancredi, Mosè in Egitto, Semiramide and La donna del lago/Rodrigo.
