  • Bellini's Norma
Bellini’s Norma - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are around 130 recordings of Norma in the catalogue of which only ten were made in the studio. The penultimate version of those was made as long as thirty-five years ago, then, after a long gap, Cecilia Bartoli made a new recording between 2011 and 2013 which is really hors concours for reasons which I elaborate in my review below. The comparative scarcity of studio accounts is partially explained by the difficulty of casting the eponymous role, which epitomises bel canto style yet also lends itself to verismo interpretation, requiring a vocalist of supreme ability and versatility. Its challenges have thus been essayed by the greatest sopranos in history, beginning with Giuditta Pasta, who created the role of Norma in 1831. Subsequent famous exponents include Maria Malibran, Jenny Lind and Lilli Lehmann in the nineteenth century, through to Claudia Muzio, Rosa Ponselle and Gina Cigna in the first part of the twentieth. Maria Callas, then Joan Sutherland, dominated the role post-war; both performed it frequently and each made two bench-mark studio recordings. Callas in particular is to this day identified with Norma alongside Tosca; she performed it on stage over eighty times and her interpretation casts a long shadow over. Artists since, such as Gencer, Caballé, Scotto, Sills, and, more recently, Sondra Radvanovsky have had success with it, but none has really challenged the supremacy of Callas and Sutherland. Now that the age of expensive studio opera recordings is largely over in favour of recording live or concert performances, and given that there seemed to be little commercial or artistic rationale for producing another recording to challenge those already in the catalogue, the appearance of the new Bartoli recording was a surprise, but it sought to justify its existence via the claim that it authentically reinstates the integrity of Bellini’s original concept in matters such as voice categories, ornamentation and instrumentation.

  • Enea Scala Is Now Considered a Reference Name in the Belcanto Baritenor Repertoire
Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Sicilian tenor with a rich and extensive voice, remarkable scenic qualities and an extremely versatile repertoire, Enea Scala is now considered a reference name in the Belcanto baritenor repertoire. After graduating from classical studies, he studied singing at the Conservatory of Bologna and later he specialized with Fernando Cordeiro Opa with whom he is still working. Since his debut in Bologna in 2006 he has ranged from Mozart (Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, La finta giardiniera) to brilliant Rossini, the Italian Belcanto, works such as Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, L'heure espagnole, L’amico Fritz, Die Fledermaus, La Juive/Leopold to get to his first Verdi titles (Falstaff and Traviata). In the belcanto repertoire beyond Bellini (Sonnambula, Zaira, Puritani, Adelson e Salvini) he is particularly interested in exploring the vast Donizetti’s repertoire (from Don Pasquale, Elisir, Convenienze teatrali to Caterina Cornaro, Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria Stuarda, Le Duc d'Albe). A close relationship links him to Rossini: after a debut in the brilliant genre (Italiana, Barbiere, Cenerentola, Il viaggio a Reims/Belfiore, Pietra del paragone) and the experience in Guillaume Tell (both as Arnoldo/Arnolde and Roudi) he reached now his repertoire of choice, starting with Armida/Rinaldo, later with Ermione/Pilade e Pirro and recently with Tancredi, Mosè in Egitto, Semiramide and La donna del lago/Rodrigo. Enea Scala In 2021 he will return at ROF, where he performed before in Tenore Sigismondo, Viaggio/Libenskof, Mosè in Egitto and Occasione fa il ladro. Enea Scala has sung on the stages of Turin, Florence, Naples, Palermo, Geneve, Marseille, Montecarlo, Lyon, Paris / Champs Elysees, Munich, Brussels, Antwerp, of the Festivals of Martina Franca, Montpellier and Glyndebourne, of Moscow (Bolshoi and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall), London (ROH and Barbican Center), Muscat, Toronto collaborating with conductors such as Bartoletti, Battistoni, Bisanti, Carignani, Ettinger, Haïm, López-Cobos, Luisi, Mariotti, Mazzola, Muti, Noseda, C.

First performed at La Fenice, Venice in 1823, Semiramide was Rossini’s last Italian opera, written at the height of his creative powers. Its subject is Greek tragedy for which librettist Gaetano Rossi drew on an adaptation by Voltaire. Instrumentally sophisticated and classically structured, the opera remains one of the most remarkable examples of Rossini’s cultivation of bel canto. Antonino Fogliani made his début in 2004 at ROSSINI IN WILDBAD, where his recordings for Naxos include Rossini’s Ciro in Babilonia, Mosè in Egitto, Otello, L’occasione fa il ladro, Vaccaj’s La sposa di Messina and Mercadante’s Don Chisciotte.
