  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Himmler by Peter Padfield Himmler by Peter Padfield
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Himmler by Peter Padfield Himmler by Peter Padfield. Anthony Storr in Dimensions , vol.6, No 2. Padfield writes clearly, and, judging from Himmler 's reference notes and bibliography, it is apparent that his research is thorough and his knowledge of his subject encyclopedic. The reader can be assured that this book contains all the facts that he could possibly want to know about Himmler, who was one of the four or five most powerful men in the Third Reich. In June 1936, Hitler promoted Himmler to the position of Chief of the German Police. Himmler's combined offices gave him unrivaled power, second only to that of Hitler. He could now proceed with his acknowledged aim of ridding the Reich of its enemies: 'Jews, Bolsheviks, priests, homosexuals'. Padfield calls this operation 'the cleansing of the German nation', and there can be little doubt that Himmler's anal-sadistic character structure inclined him to look upon mass murder as a purge, a way of clearing out the poisonous filth which had accumulated in the bowels of the German nation. The story of the decline and fall of the Third Reich, of the von Stauffenberg plot against Hitler, of Germany's final defeat, and of Hitler's suicide has often been told, but never, perhaps, more competently than in these pages. Padfield, for the most, stays with the facts and declines speculation. He has a gift for narrative, and his account of Himmler's capture by the Allies is riveting. Yet Himmler was not essentially different from many people whom we daily encounter.

She came home in 1992, for health reasons. One account claims that an underground SS organization, Stille Hilfe (Silent Aid) […] may have paid for Petri's apartment when she was released, and may also have been responsible for her being invited to Bavaria, where she enjpuyed the Alpine mountains and lakes with Gudrun Burwitz, the daughter of Heinrich Himmler and a prominent member of Silent Aid. Erna died in July 2000; she had celebrated her eightieth birthday a few months earlier. Two hundred people – everyone in the village and a number of others whom the familiy did not know – came to the funeral.« (Lower, p.

Explaining the selective employment of Nazi war criminals by British and American intelligence agencies in occupied Germany Luke Daly-Groves ABSTRACT This article reveals for the first time why a Nazi war criminal named Günter Ebeling who was employed by the American Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in occupied Germany was violently killed by British intelligence officers. Through analysis of hitherto unpublished Intelligence Division documents, it argues that existing debates concerning the post-war employment of Nazi war criminals in occupied Germany have been framed in the wrong light.

Abstract This study reveals intriguing facets of Austrian memory politics by examining the controversial Ulrichsberg Veterans meetings, held annually in southern Austria since 1958. With up to 10,000 participants at their height, the meetings attracted considerable media coverage that evolved in conjunction with changing socio-political attitudes towards the traumatic recent past. The main questions this thesis aims to answer are: to what extent can the Ulrichsberg meetings be referred to as a pilgrimage of right-wing extremists from across Europe; how have symbolism and hidden meanings contributed to this understanding; and what was the role of the Ulrichsberg in the evolution of post-war Austrian cultural memory and memory politics? This study shows that the evidence clearly demonstrates a significant link between the majority of Ulrichsberg supporters to far-right political thought, although the media’s obsession with the topic suggest some of these claims to be exaggerated.
