Erna Petri (1920-2000) Erna Petri (1920-2000) Profession: Farmer 1938: Marries SS officer Horst Petri 1942: Moves to the SS estate of Grzenda managed by her husband; from June onwards she runs the household and, in his absence, replaces her husband on the SS estate. She behaves like a lady of the manor with absolute power 1943: Shoots herself fugitive Jews and also Jewish children; because Ukrainian country people refuse to work on the estate, she drives three Ukrainian peasant women to the Janowska camp to make an example. Contrary to expectations, they are not killed, but return after a few weeks. 1942-44: Abuses Ukrainian workers on the estate after 1946: self-employed female farmer, then joining the LPG "Drei Tannen" (Agricultural Production Cooperative 'Three Firs') in Pfuhlsborn (Apolda county) 1962: Sentenced to life imprisonment (Erfurt district court); Detention at Hoheneck Fortress 1990: Review of the judgement - West German court confirms judgement + »Erna Petri, although not rehabilitated or pardoned, was eventually released from prison. She came home in 1992, for health reasons. One account claims that an underground SS organization, Stille Hilfe (Silent Aid) […] may have paid for Petri's apartment when she was released, and may also have been responsible for her being invited to Bavaria, where she enjpuyed the Alpine mountains and lakes with Gudrun Burwitz, the daughter of Heinrich Himmler and a prominent member of Silent Aid. Erna died in July 2000; she had celebrated her eightieth birthday a few months earlier. Two hundred people – everyone in the village and a number of others whom the familiy did not know – came to the funeral.« (Lower, p. 194/195) Sources: Lower, Hitler's furies; BG Erfurt, I Bs 8/62, 15.09.1962, in: DDRJuNSV, nr. 1073.

  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Himmler by Peter Padfield Himmler by Peter Padfield
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Himmler by Peter Padfield Himmler by Peter Padfield. Anthony Storr in Dimensions , vol.6, No 2. Padfield writes clearly, and, judging from Himmler 's reference notes and bibliography, it is apparent that his research is thorough and his knowledge of his subject encyclopedic. The reader can be assured that this book contains all the facts that he could possibly want to know about Himmler, who was one of the four or five most powerful men in the Third Reich. In June 1936, Hitler promoted Himmler to the position of Chief of the German Police. Himmler's combined offices gave him unrivaled power, second only to that of Hitler. He could now proceed with his acknowledged aim of ridding the Reich of its enemies: 'Jews, Bolsheviks, priests, homosexuals'. Padfield calls this operation 'the cleansing of the German nation', and there can be little doubt that Himmler's anal-sadistic character structure inclined him to look upon mass murder as a purge, a way of clearing out the poisonous filth which had accumulated in the bowels of the German nation. The story of the decline and fall of the Third Reich, of the von Stauffenberg plot against Hitler, of Germany's final defeat, and of Hitler's suicide has often been told, but never, perhaps, more competently than in these pages. Padfield, for the most, stays with the facts and declines speculation. He has a gift for narrative, and his account of Himmler's capture by the Allies is riveting. Yet Himmler was not essentially different from many people whom we daily encounter.

Explaining the selective employment of Nazi war criminals by British and American intelligence agencies in occupied Germany Luke Daly-Groves ABSTRACT This article reveals for the first time why a Nazi war criminal named Günter Ebeling who was employed by the American Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in occupied Germany was violently killed by British intelligence officers. Through analysis of hitherto unpublished Intelligence Division documents, it argues that existing debates concerning the post-war employment of Nazi war criminals in occupied Germany have been framed in the wrong light.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Controversial Veterans Meetings on the Ulrichsberg
University of Alberta Flashpoints of Austrian Memory: A Critical Analysis of the Controversial Veterans Meetings on the Ulrichsberg by Alexander Loschberger A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of: Master of Arts in History Department of History and Classics © Alexander Loschberger Fall 2013 Edmonton, Alberta Permission is hereby granted to the University of Alberta Libraries to reproduce single copies of this thesis and to lend or sell such copies for private, scholarly or scientific research purposes only. Abstract This study reveals intriguing facets of Austrian memory politics by examining the controversial Ulrichsberg Veterans meetings, held annually in southern Austria since 1958. With up to 10,000 participants at their height, the meetings attracted considerable media coverage that evolved in conjunction with changing socio-political attitudes towards the traumatic recent past. The main questions this thesis aims to answer are: to what extent can the Ulrichsberg meetings be referred to as a pilgrimage of right-wing extremists from across Europe; how have symbolism and hidden meanings contributed to this understanding; and what was the role of the Ulrichsberg in the evolution of post-war Austrian cultural memory and memory politics? This study shows that the evidence clearly demonstrates a significant link between the majority of Ulrichsberg supporters to far-right political thought, although the media’s obsession with the topic suggest some of these claims to be exaggerated.

  • Federal Republic of Germany
Federal Republic of Germany National Affairs ITOLITICAL LIFE DURING the latter half of 1995 and the first six months of 1996 was dominated by Chancellor Helmut Kohl's efforts to shore up the economy and to reduce the unemployment rate of over 9 percent (15 percent in the former East Germany). The first half of 1996 showed signs of slowly in- creasing economic activity, but unemployment was still the main problem. The government's proposed "Sparpaket" (savings package) was the focus of on- going controversy. The package that Kohl formally presented to the Bundestag on April 26, 1996, included cuts of DM 25 billion (roughly $15 billion) from the 1997 budget in social spending, notably in sick leave and unemployment bene- fits, in postponed increases in payments to families with children, and in salaries of public employees. The opposition Social Democrats' Oskar Lafontaine charged that the plan would undermine Germany's postwar consensus on social justice and offered a substitute plan to increase personal income taxes at the higher end of the social scale along with other tax measures. The period also saw significant episodes of white-collar crime involving some of the country's biggest industrial enterprises, culminating in the arrest of ten se- nior officers of the Ruhr coal-and-steel producer Thyssen AG. The ten were ac- cused of illegal financial transactions in connection with the liquidation of a for- mer East German metallurgical company. Top officers of other manufacturing giants, like Mannesmann AG, carmaker Daimler-Benz AG, factory-installation company Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG, and shipbuilder Bremer Vulkan Ver- bund AG, were under investigation.
