    THE RECLAMATION OF SAMI IDENTITY AND THE TRACES OF SWEDISH COLONIALISM A qualitative study about the formation of Saminess and Sami identity Master’s Programme in Social Work and Human Rights Degree report 30 higher education credit Spring 2020 Author : Frida Olofsson Supervisor : Adrián Groglopo Abstract Title: The Reclamation of Sami identity and the traces of Swedish colonialism : A qualitative study about the formation of Saminess and Sami identity Author: Frida Olofsson Key words (ENG): Sami identity, Saminess, Sami people, Indigenous People, identity Nyckelord (SWE): Samisk identitet, Samiskhet, Samer, Urfolk, Identitet The purpose of this study was to study identity formation among Sami people. The aim was therefore to investigate how Saminess and Sami identity is formed and specifically the way the Sami community transfers the identity. Semi structured interviews were conducted and the material was analyzed by the use of a thematic analysis. In the analysis of the material, four main themes were : Transfer of Sami heritage over generations, Sami identity, Expressions about being Sami and Sami attributes. The theoretical framework consisted of Postcolonial theory and theoretical concepts of identity. The main findings showed that the traces of colonialism is still present in the identity-formation of the Sami people and that there is a strong silence-culture related to the experiences of colonial events which consequently also have affected the intergenerational transfer of Saminess and Sami identity. Furthermore, the will to reclaim the Sami identity, heritage and the importance of a sense of belonging is strongly expressed by the participants. This can in turn be seen as a crucial step for the decolonization process of the Sami population as a whole.

    Journalism Studies for the Indigenous Sámi: From preparatory courses to worldwide Indigenous Master’s Studies Torkel Rasmussen Abstract Journalism studies for the Indigenous Sámi people began with one year of preparatory studies at Sámi University College in Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino Norway in 1992. In 2000, Sámi University College launched a pilot project for a separate Sámi Journalism course. This course developed into a permanent Bachelor’s program in the years to follow. Sámi language is the primary language of instruction in this program, and students are trained to function as journalists in Sámi society with special skills to work in Sámi media and with Sámi language as their working language. In January 2015, Sámi University College launched a new Master’s program, the Master of Sámi Journalism from an Indigenous Perspective program. The Candidate and Bachelor’s programs were developed to meet the needs of professional journalists in a growing Sámi media field prioritizing Sámi language production, and the Master’s program aims to train experts with Indigenous media expertise for leadership positions in Sámi and other Indigenous media and academic institutions. Keywords: Sámi media, media education, journalism studies, Indigenous education, language revitalization Introduction The main subject of this article is the establishment and development of journalism education for Sámis. I will address; 1) the history of Sámi Journalism Studies at Sámi University College, 2) how the program developed from preparatory studies to encourage Sámi students to start studying journalism in Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish colleges, 3) how the Sámi University College established a Bachelor’s Program of Sámi Journalism and 4) established an international Master’s program of Indigenous Journalism named “Master in Sámi Journalism from an Indigenous Perspective” in 2015.

The indigenous rights therefore differ in each country. Finlands Sami policy may be described as accommodative. The accommodative Sami policy has had two consequences. Firstly, it has made Sami collective issues non-political and has thus change focus from previously political mobilization to present substate administration. Secondly, the depoliticization of the Finnish Sami probably can explain the absent of overt territorial conflicts. However, this has slightly changes due the discussions on implementation of the ILO Convention No 169. Swedish Sami politics can be described by quarrel and distrust. Recently the implementation of ILO Convention No 169 has changed this description slightly and now there is a clear legal demand to consult the Sami in land use issues that may affect the Sami. The Reindeer herding is an important indigenous symbol and business for the Sami especially for the Swedish Sami. Here is the reindeer herding organized in a so called Sameby, which is an economic organisations responsible for the reindeer herding. Only Sami that have parents or grandparents who was a member of a Sameby may become members.

    Samer i to norske nyhetsmedier En undersøkelse av saker med samisk hovedfokus i Nordlys og Dagsrevyen i perioden 1970–2000 Arne Johansen Ijäs Forord Slutten av 1900-tallet var en særdeles begivenhetsrik tid i samisk historie i Norge. Forsøkene på å knekke den samiske kulturen led sitt endelige nederlag, og i stedet vokste det fram en moderne samisk nasjon. Begivenhetene og prosessene som førte fram til denne utviklingen har etter hvert blitt gjenstand for oppmerksomheten til flere forskere, særlig ved Universitetet i Tromsø. Historikere, arkeologer, antropologer, samfunnsvi- tere, jurister og språkforskere har studert og søkt å forklare det som har skjedd både ved hjelp av studier i fortiden og nåtiden. Nyhetsmedier har de siste 30–40 år fått en stadig breiere plass i samfunnet, og i forbindelse med samenes kamp for sin nasjon har de utvilsomt spilt en viktig rolle både som bremsekloss og pådriver i proses- sen. De nasjonale medienes plass i samisk historie mot slutten av forrige hundreår har ikke vært gjenstand for omfattende studier til nå, og denne framstillingen er et lite bidrag til å se hendelsene fra et medieperspektiv. Framstillingen vil kunne brukes av studenter og forskere i mediefag og historie som ønsker å se på minoritetenes situasjon i majoritetssamfunnet. Jeg vil takke Norges Forskningsråd som gav meg et 3-årig stipend til å forske på disse spørsmål. Laponia, consisting of previously well-known national parks such as Stora Sjöfallet and Sarek, obtained its World Heritage status in 1996. Both the biological and geological significance of the area and the local Sami reindeer herding culture are in- cluded in the justification for World Heritage status. This thesis explores how Laponia became an arena for the long-standing Sami ethno-political struggle for increased self- governance and autonomy. In many other parts of the world, various joint management schemes between indigenous groups and national environmental protection agencies are more and more common, but in Sweden no such agreements between the Swedish Envi- ronmental Protection Agency and the Sami community have been tested. The local Sami demanded to have a significant influence, not to say control, over the future management of Laponia. These were demands that were not initially acknowledged by the local and national authorities, and the negotiations about the management of Laponia continued over a period of ten years.

    AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Amanda Sophie Green for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Anthropology presented on June 9, 2016. Title: Tastes of Sovereignty: An Ethnography of Sámi Food Movements in Arctic Sweden. Abstract approved: _____________________________________________________ Joan E. Gross In this dissertation, I examine the process of building a Sámi food movement in northern Sweden. Using 15 months of ethnographic research that included observation of food events (n=100) and semi-structured interviews with food producers and activists (n=47), I describe how Sámi individuals are incorporating global food activism frameworks into their efforts to maintain Sámi cultural and livelihood practices. Two frameworks have become salient to Sámi efforts: food sovereignty and rural food development. I find that on the one hand food sovereignty provides a discourse that enables Sámi activists to address their concerns with land access and climate change, which threaten their food production. On the other hand, the protection and development of their heritage foods, through programs like Slow Food and other third party certifications, enable them to connect with consumers and to address their concern for the cooptation of Sámi knowledge, which equally threatens their ability to make a living selling Sámi foods and culinary knowledge. I demonstrate that new discourses and spaces become available – nutrition science discourses and national food conferences for example – which Sámi activists accustomize for their own ends. This dissertation is one of the first to address how indigenous sovereignty movements and food movements are together enabling indigenous peoples to work towards sovereignty in new discourses and spaces.
