Grammar of Old Tamil for Students NETamil Series 1 GRAMMAR OF OLD TAMIL FOR STUDENTS 1st Edition Eva Wilden Preface The map of Old Tamil grammar still shows many white patches, although the existing descriptive works are numerous, at least in comparison to other Dravidian languages. One reason for this is that most of these works have been written by people who come from modern Tamil and see Old Tamil just as a precursor of their language. Another reason is that the prolific tradition of ilakkaṇam, grammar, has been as much of an obstacle as it has been of help in understanding. Moreover, the current representations are lopsided in that they pay an inordinate amount of attention to morphology (which is relatively simple) and next to none to syntax (which to this day in many respects is hardly understood). But more than everything else it is the attitude of teachers that has made Old Tamil a language very difficult to learn. Old Tamil is a language not well taught: to this day there is no grammar for students, no manuals, hardly a few readers. Tamil has the nimbus of a religion, something not to be learned by rod, but to be imbibed, on the Tamilian side because it is an identity marker and on the Western (European and American) side because it discourages students from asking embarassing questions. That is the situation the Classical Tamil Winter and Summer Seminars (CTWS/CTSS) having been trying to remedy for the last thirteen years. This year the CTWS/CTSS went into its 14th year which means the beginners course was held for the 7th time. Though the Reader and the Grammar are still far from adequate, significant progress has been made. The Reader now has a unified glossary for all the texts included (however, since this had to be done by hand, there might still be mistakes and lacunae). A minor drawback is that, since much of the bhakti material has been selected for the easiest stages, many of the later forms developing in the course of the first millennium do not actually occur. This will be remedied by adding further (advanced) readers with full analytical glossaries, based on the material produced for the CTWS/CTSS – soon to be available for download from the didactic section of the NETamil website. The grammar ii Grammar of Old Tamil for Students is growing with the corpus under scrutiny which might by now be described as Tamil literature of the first millennium. Since for most texts reliable editions, let alone statistics for their morphology and lexicon, are not available, much of this is still patchwork – although within the last ten years a number of critical editions have appeared and several more are under preparation, and also e-texts have become markedly more numerous. But still, whenever I open a new book I come across a form not yet included here. An easy way out would be to distinguish strictly between the grammars of Early, Middle and Late Old Tamil as well as Middle Tamil, but this would be far from reality since chronology, even in the internal sense, is for the most part not well established and since many texts cover several strata. Moreover it would not be practical for students, who want a single reference work where they can find anything they might need. Thus both students and teachers will have to live with the fact that the area covered will continue to grow, along with the descriptive text and the account of syntax. Things might be speeding up because the community of scholars working in the field has definitely increased over the last ten years. The book is still conceived as a one-month course, true to the original scheme of the CTWS/CTSS, divided into chapters that correspond to lessons numbered from 1 to 20. But the lessons have been arranged in a way that the whole can be consulted as a grammar, starting with introductory material, sandhi, noun morphology and syntax, verb morphology and syntax, poetics and metrics. Please note that examples throughout this grammar when rendered in Tamil script appear in the form they ought to have, namely with sandhi and metrical split, while the transcript provides a complete word split. A select bibliography including the editions of the texts quoted as examples (in so far as no critical editions are available) and the references to the works on grammar and lexicography mentioned is added at the end. Many people I have to thank for enabling me to bring together the material for this book and for helping me to correct it, first of all, of course, the scholars with whom I studied Tamil: S.A. Srinvasan, T.V. Gopal Iyer and T.S. Literature and texts are tangible symbols, containing signifed cultural meaning, and they represent varying aspects of an existing international ethnic, social, or linguistic culture or group. In particular, those written in South Asian indigenous languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Urdu, Sinhalese are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to specifc culture[s] and cannot be properly conveyed in English translations.

Present-day Leadership Theories Anand Amaladass Satya Nilayam Research Institute, Chennai, South India [Abstract] It is useful to keep in mind the present-day discussion on leadership theories from the Western traditions before looking at an ancient Indian text from a leadership perspective. The purpose is not to seek parallels, but to juxtapose them. In this way the reader will evocatively perceives the underlying value system found in the Indian text discussed here. Obviously, historical contexts and present day worldviews are different. But wisdom embedded in ancient Indian tradition has perennial values that transcends time and space; is applicable to every period of history and has cross-cultural appeal. The research shall briefly sum up what “leadership” means in today’s management sectors. The theme of the paper is ‘Values in Leadership.’ This presentation will be based on this ancient Tamil text Tirukkural, which discusses administration and management by a ruler in his country. In the early days, prophets, priests, chiefs, and kings were models of leadership. The Greek concepts of leadership were illustrated by the heroes in Homer’s epic Iliad. The qualities admired by the Greeks are justice and judgment (Agamemnon), wisdom and council (Hector), shrewdness and cunning (Odysseus), valor and activism (Achilles). Philosophers like Plato looked for an ideal leader to rule the State with order and reason.

    AN ETHNOMUSICOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON KANIYAN KOOTHU Aaron J. Paige This paper will analyze some of the strategies by which Kaniyans, a minority com- munity from the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu, use music as a vehicle to negoti- ate, reconcile, and understand social, cultural, and economic change. Kaniyan Koothu performances are generally commissioned for kodai festivals, during which Kaniyans sing lengthy ballads. These stories vary locally from village to village and recount the adventures, exploits, and virtues of gods and goddesses specific to the area and community in which they are worshipped. While these narratives are en- tertaining in their own right, they also serve as springboards for subjective compari- son and interpretation. Kaniyans thus, transform mythological legends into modern social commentary. In a world perceived to be growing increasingly complicated by globalization and modernization, these folk musicians openly voice in performance both their concern for the loss of traditional values and their trepidation that Tamil culture, tamizh panpaadu – particularly village culture, gramiya panpaadu – are gradually being displaced by foreign principles, products, and technologies. In con- tradistinction to this conservative rhetoric, the Kaniyans, in recent years, have made major reformations to their own musical practice. Using specific textual examples, the first part of this paper will look at the ways in which musicians’ semi-improvised narratives foster solidarity under the rubric of a shared Tamil language and cultural identity. The second part of this paper, by way of musical examples, will attempt to illuminate how these same musicians are engaged in redefining and reformulating their musical tradition through the appropriation and integration of rhythmic models characteristic of Carnatic drumming.

  • There Are Literary, Archaeological, Epigraphic and Numismatic Sources of Ancient Tamil History
    HISTORY OF KONGUNADU UPTO 1800 AD UNIT1: SOURCES: There are literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic sources of ancient Tamil history. The foremost among these sources is the Sangam literature, generally dated to 5th century BCE to 3rd century CE. The poems in Sangam literature contain vivid descriptions of the different aspects of life and society in Tamilakam during this age; scholars agree that, for the most part, these are reliable accounts. Greek and Roman literature, around the dawn of the Christian era, give details of the maritime trade between Tamilakam and the Roman empire, including the names and locations of many ports on both coasts of the Tamil country. Archaeological excavations of several sites in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have yielded remnants from the Sangam era, such as different kinds of pottery, pottery with inscriptions, imported ceramic ware, industrial objects, brick structures and spinning whorls. Techniques such as stratigraphy and paleography have helped establish the date of these items to the Sangam era. The excavated artifacts have provided evidence for existence of different economic activities mentioned in Sangam literature such as agriculture, weaving, smithy, gem cutting, building construction, pearl fishing and painting. Inscriptions found on caves and pottery are another source for studying the history of Tamilakam. Writings in Tamil-Brahmi script have been found in many locations in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and also in Egypt and Thailand.[1] mostly recording grants made by the kings and chieftains. References are also made to other aspects of the Sangam society. Coins issued by the Tamil kings of this age have been recovered from river beds and urban centers of their kingdoms.
