H . a , as o e in i t , were not at , but out of quite another part of the alphabet .

In lieu of reconciling all the divergent and s s s vigorou ly debated opinion about Shake peare , it became my amusement to test each new biography of the poet on one subj ect : Did ? s Shakespeare poach Are we thi year , or are s ? On we not , to believe the tory the face of is m m it , it extre ely probable that a country an of twenty Odd years Should steal deer and be thrashed for it . But , on the face of it , again , it is extremely improbable that the greatest s and mo st learned poet in the language hould , m m m fall a arried an with a growing fa ily , into “ ” Other Lives of Shakespeare 3

H of the life of Shake peare s infor ation , he 4 William S hakespeare s s m m m ay , ca e ainly fro the actor Betterton . About 1 690 (Shakespeare died in 1 6 1 6) Betterton went down to Warwickshire to learn s what he could about Shake peare . Now Rowe , who had obtained h is information from B et h is War terton , who in turn had obtained in w ick sh ire at a time when every one who had personally known Shakespeare w as either s - s eventy four year old , older , or dead , wrote as * follows : ( 1 ) “ m s mm He had , by a i fortune co on enough to l s l m young fel ow , fa len into ill co pany ; and m s m s m m a ong t the , o e that ade a frequent practice of deer-stealing engaged h im with them more than once in robbing a park belonging to m s Ch erlecot sic Sir Tho a Lucy of ! ], near Strat s w as s ford . I believe that thi the view “ held to- day by the consensus of scholarly opinion . “ The word play on luce in The Merry ” W s ss s m s e ive , the po ible i ilarity between Ju tic Shall ow in the same play and Sir Thomas s h as Lucy , the fact that Shake peare been credited with some scurrilous verses against n s i that k ight , and that the poaching tory s the only glimmer of light between the marriage of Shakespeare and h is appearance in London have done much to confirm the orthodox m theory of the incident . Other infor ation m s derivable fro Rowe and Davie , not having s s h as a s uch upport , been ccepted or di carded m less elaborately , after the anner of Mr . m ss so .
