Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

Liturgical Calendar DECEMBER 2017 LECTIONARY FOR SUNDAYS: YEAR B ADVENT Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas, when Christ’s first coming to us is remembered; and as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful expectation. The playing of the organ and other musical instruments, and the decoration of the altar with flowers should be done in a moderate manner, as is consonant with the character of the season, without anticipating the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord. The same moderation should be observed in the celebration of Matrimony. Eucharistic Prayer 4 is not used in this Season. Religion and Innovation in Human Affairs (RIHA) Exploring the Role of Religion in the Origins of Novelty and the Diffusion of Innovation in the Progress of Civilizations Religion and Innovation: Naturalism, Scientific Progress, and Secularization Protestantism? Reflections in Advance of the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation ($75,000). Gordon College. PIs: Thomas Albert Howard (Gordon College) and Mark A. Noll (University of Notre Dame) With an eye on the approaching quincentennial, of the Protestant Reformation, the project has engaged in a fundamental inquiry into the historical significance of Protestantism, its heterogeneous trajectories of influence, and their relationship to forces of social innovation, political development, and religious change in the modern West and across the globe. The quincentennial of the Protestant Reformation in 2017 will bring into public view longstanding scholarly debates, interpretations and their revisions—along with lingering confessional animosities and more recent ecumenical overtures. For Western Christianity, a moment of historical recollection on this scale has not presented itself in recent memory. Acts of commemoration can be enlisted to reflect, shape, and introduce novel forces into history. They were not simply conduits or transmitters of the old, but definers and harbingers of the new. In this sense, we might view the past commemorations of the Reformation as being not unlike the sixteenth-century Reformation itself: a series of acts motivated by the desire of retrieval and restoration that, in the final analysis, left a legacy of profound change, disruption, and innovation in human history. religions Article Politics of the Blessed Lady: Catholic Art in the Contemporary Hungarian Culture Industry Marc Roscoe Loustau McFarland Center for Religion, Culture and Ethics, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA 02131, USA; [email protected] or [email protected]; Tel.: +1-857-222-6955 Abstract: I examine Hungary’s Catholic arts industry and its material practices of cultural production: the institutions and professional disciplines through which devotional material objects move as they become embedded in political processes of national construction and contestation. Ethnographic data come from thirty-six months of fieldwork in Hungary and Transylvania, and focuses on three museum and gallery exhibitions of Catholic devotional objects. Building on critiques of subjectivity- and embodiment-focused research, I highlight how the institutional legacies of state socialism in Hungary and Romania inform a national politics of Catholic materiality. Hungarian cultural institutions and intellectuals have been drawn to work with Catholic art because Catholic material culture sustains a meaningful presence across multiple scales of political contestation at the local, regional, and state levels. The movement of Catholic ritual objects into the zone of high art and cultural preservation necessitates that these objects be mobilized for use within the political agendas of state-embedded institutions. Yet, this mobilization is not total. Ironies, confusions, and contradictions continue to show up in Transylvanian Hungarians’ historical memory, destabilizing these political uses. Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. -

City of Tawas City Policies and Procedures Subject: Cemetery Regulations Effective date: February 19, 2019 Background This policy establishes standards for the operation and management of the City of Tawas City Memory Gardens Cemetery. These regulations do not supersede the City of Tawas City Code of Ordinances, Chapter 7, Cemeteries. Definitions • Burial: placing remains of a deceased human body into the ground • Columbarium: an above ground structure with niches designed for the purpose of interring cremains • Columbarium Niche: a single space in a columbarium designated to contain cremains within an urn or container • Cremains: the incinerated ashes of a human body • Interment: the permanent disposition of the remains or cremains of a deceased person • Monument: a tombstone, grave marker, memorial, or headstone identifying a grave or graves, or a nameplate with an inscription identifying a niche • Owner(s): the person(s) or immediate family (husband, wife, father, mother, son, or daughter) member(s) to whom the City has conveyed burial rights • Plot: a grave space for interment of a deceased person by cremation or burial • Section/Block/Lot: the terms used to describe the location of a plot in the cemetery • Urn: a container that holds human cremains Management of the Cemetery 1. The Memory Gardens Cemetery (Cemetery) is owned and managed by the City of Tawas City (City). All operations are under the direction of the Cemetery Sexton, who is the City Manager or his/her designee. 2. The fees and charges established for the Cemetery shall be set by and approved by the Tawas City Council. 3. The City is responsible for operating and maintaining the Cemetery, including but not limited to grounds maintenance, the selling of all plots and columbarium niches, maintaining accurate records of all sales and burials, and coordinating interments. -
