Was it the revisionism and the orthodoxy of the Second International? Was it l Lenin? Or was it Marx himself in his late work, after he abandoned his youthful humanism (as some 'humanist Marxists' claimed decades ago)? This entire topic has to be rejected: there is no opposition here, the Fall is to be inscribed into the very origins. (To put it even more pointedly, such a search fo r the intruder who infected the original model and set in motion its degeneration cannot but reproduce the logic of anti-Semitism.) What this means is that, even if- or, rather, especially if­ one submits the Marxist past to a ruthless critique, one has first to acknowledge it as 'one's own', taking fu ll responsibility fo r it, not to comfortably get rid of the 'bad' tum of things by way of attributing it to a fo reign intruder (the 'bad' Engels who was too stupid to understand Marx's dialectics, the 'bad' Lenin who didn't get the core of Marx's theory, the 'bad' Stalin who spoils the noble plans of the 'good' Lenin, etc.) . The first thing to do, then, is to fu lly endorse the displacement in the history of Marxism concentrated in two great passages (or, rather, violent cuts): the passage fr om Marx to Lenin, as well as the passage fr om Lenin to Mao.     104 EBHR-42 Learning in a Guerrilla Community of Practice: Literacy practices, situated learning and youth in Nepal’s Maoist movement (1996-2006) Ina Zharkevich The arts of war are better than no arts at all. (Richards 1998: 24) Young people and conflict, unemployed youth, risk and resiliencehave emerged as key research themes over the past decade or so. The so-called ‘youth bulge theories’ have contributedconsiderably to research on youth and the policy agendas that prioritise the study of youth. It is postulated that the vast numbers of young people in developing countries do not have opportunities for employment and are therefore at risk ofbecoming trouble-makers(see the critique in Boyden 2006). The situation in South Asia might be considered a good example. According tothe World Bank Survey, South Asia has the highest proportion of unemployed and inactive youth in the world (The Economist, 2013).1So, what do young unemployed and inactive people do? Since the category of ‘unemployed youth’ includes people of different class, caste and educa- tional backgrounds, at the risk of oversimplifying the picture,one could argue that some have joined leftist guerrilla movements, while others, especially in India, have filled the rank and file of the Hindu right – either the groups of RSS volunteers (Froerer 2006) or the paramilitaries, such as Salwa Judum (Miklian 2009), who are fighting the Indian Maoists. Both in Nepal and in India, others are in limbo after receiving their degrees, waiting for the prospect of salaried employment whilst largely relying on the political patronage they gained through their membership of the youth wings of various political parties (Jeffrey 2010), which is a common occurrence on university campuses in both India and Nepal (Snellinger 2007).

    Do Away with the Ideology of Bourgeois Right By Zhang Chunqiao, People’s Daily, October 13, 1958 Translator’s Note: At the time he wrote this, Zhang Chunqiao had been a member of the city commit- tee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Shanghai, publisher of the Shanghai newspaper Lib- eration, and a leader in attacking Rightist cultural figures in Shanghai. The article reflects the enthu- siasm for a rapid transition to communism that came out of the People’s Commune movement in 1958. Although the egalitarian “supply system” had been officially abolished in 1955, Zhang argues that it should be brought back and extended to the whole society. Mao considered this idea in 1958, and this article was only reprinted in Beijing’s People’s Daily at Mao’s insistence and with an (un- signed) introductory note that Mao wrote. Zhang later played a significant role in the Cultural Revolu- tion, and was prosecuted by the CPC’s victors as a member of the “Gang of Four.” Condemned to death, his sentence was later commuted to life in prison. He was released for medical reasons in 1998, and died in 2005. Editor's note: This essay of Comrade Zhang Chunqiao appeared in the Shanghai "Liberation" semi- monthly, number six, [1958], and is now reprinted here for discussion by comrades. This question needs discussion, because of the important issues now facing us. We think that Zhang's essay is ba- sically correct, but somewhat one-sided, precisely because what is said about the historical process may not be the complete explanation.

Within two years a second party – the Communist Party of the Philippines (cpp) – had been founded. In this work I argue that it was the political program of Stalinism, embodied in both parties through three basic principles – socialism in one country, the two-stage theory of revolution, and the bloc of four classes – that determined the fate of political struggles in the Philippines in the late 1960s and early 1970s and facilitated Marcos’ declaration of Martial Law in September 1972. I argue that the split in the Communist Party of the Philippines was the direct expression of the Sino-Soviet split in global Stalinism. The impact of this geopolitical split arrived late in the Philippines because it was initially refracted through Jakarta.

    The Marxist Volume XXI, No. 4 October-December 2005 Anil Biswas ‘Maoism’: An Exercise in Anarchism In recent times, some areas of West Bengal have witnessed activities of the ‘Maoist’ group. The group has tried to draw attention to itself through committing several grisly murders and by triggering some explosions. They are engaged in setting up ‘bases’ in the remote and relatively inaccessible locales of West Bengal that border Bihar-Jharkhand. They seek a foothold in some other districts of the state as well. A section of the corporate media has also been encouraging them, by legitimising the Maoists’ killing of CPI (M) leaders and workers in districts like Bankura, Purulia, and Midnapore west. The CPI (M-L)-People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre, two groups of the Naxalite persuasion, came together on 21 September 2004 to form a new party, the CPI (Maoist). As with the two erstwhile constituents, the Maoists are active in selected areas of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Because of the secretive style of their working, their political outlook and activities are largely unknown to the mass of the people. The name of the CPI (Maoist) has been associated with violent acts and spreading terror. Going by their programme and ideological stand, the party is a violent anarchist outfit. Anarchy can cause harm to the democratic struggle and Left movement. The CPI (M) will counter this party politically and ideologically. The CPI (M) formed after a long ideological debate in 1964, and a new Party Programme was adopted. Sectarian and ultra-left adventurist trends arose in the ongoing struggle against revisionism and reformism.
