Perkins School of ’s Bridwell Library is celebrating completion of a major project preserving and providing digital access to audio recordings featuring Rabbi Olan, who served Temple Emanu- El as Rabbi from 1949 until his retirement in 1970. Bridwell’s archival collection includes 210 recordings of The Temple Emanu-El Program, a radio show broadcast for many years by WFAA-AM in . Concern about SMU’s Bridwell Library Archivist Tim Binkley and Elizabeth Hirsch the 40-50 year shelf life of reel-to- reel tape, along with a desire to Pollman Performing Arts Programs make the recordings more easily accessible to the public, led Bridwell Library Archivist Tim Binkley to contact Rabbi Olan’s daughter, Elizabeth Hirsch, in 2010. WWW.TEDALLAS.ORG/ANNUALCAMPAIGN 6 Social Justice Religious School teaches the lessons of Social Justice Our responsibility to partner with God on the continuing work of creation is one of the most important Jewish values we teach our children. We have been teaching this lesson for years in the Religious School and are excited about how we have been able to enforce this message in practice as well. On the most basic level, each Religious School class collects money for tzedakah every Sunday morning, with the exception of one Sunday a month, when students bring in items for the Temple-wide monthly collection. Individual classes do Social Justice projects as part of their curriculum, such as making sandwiches for shelters or hosting a bake sale to benefit various outdoor and sustainability projects in Israel and here at home. One of our Tichon (7th/8th grade) classes, “The Soul and Soil Connection,” is devoted to the Religious School bed in our Community Garden and, along with Heidi Kutchin, they study and practice the values and techniques of growing and giving. This year, we have reintroduced Family Mitzvah Corps, a program for students and families to engage in Tikkun Olam through ongoing social justice initiatives at Temple, all while building relationships with other Temple families. Family Mitzvah Corps takes place twice a year each during Religious School for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and their families. To read more about Family Mitzvah Corps, please see page 11.

With this, students in the third through fifth grade worked with their parents twice a year during Religious School to promote family learning and mitzvah work with TE’s social justice partners. This collaboration provided third grade students with the opportunity for clean up projects at the cemetery and a Geniza service to bury old Jewish books. The Jewish Federation is sponsoring and underwriting this scan in an effort to help us better understand community needs. They have employed a professional market research firm, Measuring Success, to implement and coordinate the scan. Measuring Success has developed valuable information for other communities such as in the New York and Chicago Jewish communities.

We are currently involved in a series of meetings with a task force, key informants and focus groups to plan the research. Far more than a demographic survey, and not relying on anecdotal information, the value of participating in this Community Scan is that the results will be data-driven, where we will be able to explore things like gaps in service to members of the broader Jewish community, what constituents think of various agencies and Jewish organizations in our community, barriers to participation, etc.

You will be asked to participate in the actual survey. Please give it your best attention. Your responses will not only be synthesized into a community-wide analysis but also into an analysis of our own Temple membership. The survey will be coming to people with known e-mail addresses. If responses are not received, people from Measuring Success may be calling you by phone to complete the survey. All personal information will remain private and confidential.

Aside from the data collectors at Measuring Success, no other agency or people will have access to any Temple members’ information. We strongly encourage you to participate – for the strength and future of our Temple community and our Dallas Jewish community at large.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Executive Committee member, Marcia Grossfeld, at [email protected] or Program Director, Karen Hoffman, at khoffman@ tedallas.org or 214.706.0000.

Sincerely,

Scott McCartney, Rick Rosenberg, President Executive Director

May dates to remember Randy Myer gives D’Var Torah at the March meeting May 1 – Brotherhood Monthly Randy Myer presented the D’Var Meeting & Dinner Torah for the week to members of the Brotherhood who were present for the May 5 – Brotherhood Mitzvah monthly meeting in March. The weekly Cooking parsha came from the book of Exodus 35:1 - 40:38 and is called Vayakhel and Pekudei. Randy discussed the fact that the Mishkan, or Tabernacle, was finally complete. The nation looked at the magnificent work with great joy, and Moshe was proud. So proud, in fact, that he did something that he only did once more – just before his death: he blessed the entire nation. Randy finished his discussion by stating that Hashem promised that he would dwell in the Mishkan. However, Randy Myer Moshe’s questions were, “Would the Jews let him in?” “Would they make him a partner?” “ Would they recognize Hashem as a significant factor even in the physical handiwork that they themselves had wrought?” Randy Myer These are great questions for each member to answer for himself. 18 Contributions Clergy Good Works Bar Mitzvah of Reece Rabin Appreciation of Debbie Anne and Sam Kesner by Barbara Hurst & Richard Koeppel Fund Schatz by Chris Cheniae Caring Congregation Distributed to needy individuals, by Ricki & Andy Rabin Fund community causes or worthy Supports Temple members through institutions by the rabbis and cantor of Bris of Brady Bernknopf Katherine F.
