Olan Friday, May 31 the Rabbi Levi A. Olan Digital Collection at Radio Sermon Series 6:15 p.m. in Pollman Hall Bridwell Library, the library of the Perkins Bring your lunch and join us to listen to School of Theology at SMU. Here’s the story: Rabbi Olan’s radio sermons from the 1960’s Saturday, June 1 A few years ago, Bridwell archivist Timothy that were originally broadcast on WFAA radio, 10:30 a.m. in Lefkowitz Chapel Binkley discovered a large unlabeled box in followed by a discussion led by Dr. Morton 10:30 a.m. in the Olan Sanctuary the Bridwell basement. He opened the box to Prager. Mondays, 12:15 pm-1:30 p.m. Weiss 4:30 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary discover over one hundred reel-to-reel tapes, containing the recordings of over two hundred Youth Lounge. The original tapes were digitized of Rabbi Olan’s weekly Sunday morning radio and uploaded to the Internet, and are available Friday, June 7 addresses offered from 1961- on the website of the Bridwell Library at SMU. 6 p.m. in Pollman Hall 1970. Tim knew about Rabbi Schedule 2013-2014: Saturday, June 8 Olan’s longstanding relationship October 14, 21, 28 9 a.m. in Pollman Hall with Perkins and Bridwell, and November 4, 11, 18 Tot Shabbat had in fact studied his sermons January 27 10:30 a.m. in Lefkowitz Chapel in a class here at Temple with 10:30 a.m. in the Olan Sanctuary February 3, 10, 17, 24 4:30 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary Rabbi Knight. And so began the March 3 process, with the full-hearted Friday, June 14 Rabbi engagement and support of 6:15 p.m. in Pollman Hall RSVP: Ellie Solimani, Adult Learning David Stern Elizabeth Olan Hirsch, of Coordinator 214.706.0000 ext. 188 or Saturday, June 15 digitizing the tapes. The experience of hearing the sermon was 4:30 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary It is plainspoken and profound, impeccably breathtaking, and brought tears to people’s eyes: reasoned and deeply passionate. It anchors in superb sound quality, Rabbi Olan’s voice, Friday, June 28 its listeners on the way to agitating them, and intellect, and call for justice filled the room. 6:15 p.m. in Pollman Hall agitates them on the way to giving them hope. Almost fifty years later, the prod to conscience still In reflecting on the impact and ramifications landed with prophetic force. We all felt blessed to Saturday, June 29 of the Kennedy assassination and the attention be there. 10:30 a.m. in Lefkowitz Chapel it brought to Dallas, Rabbi Olan declares And best of all, the commitment of the 10:30 a.m. in the Olan Sanctuary directly that “the city is not guilty of the crime.” Bridwell Library is not just to hold and preserve 4:30 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary But lest you think that the preacher’s goal this collection, but to make it available to as is to soothe his audience, Rabbi Olan has a many people as possible. You can access the Friday, July 5 different message to deliver in these words: complete collection (which includes a helpful 6:15 p.m. in Pollman Hall The “powerful searchlight … was focused on search function) at a wonderful website: http:// this city,” and our flaws “were shown to the Saturday, July 6 digitalcollections.smu.edu/all/bridwell/olan. world.” “The city which enjoyed boasting of Many members of this congregation were 10:30 a.m. in Lefkowitz Chapel itself with a capital letter was revealed as a place privileged to hear Rabbi Olan’s forceful brilliance where the number of children who drop out Continued on Page 3 from the pulpit of Temple Emanu-El over his of school is shocking … There was bitterness decades of leadership; others of us have had the and hate which did not receive the reprimand privilege of reading his words. • Caverphone Revisited
Caverphone Revisited Caversham Project Occasional Technical Paper Code Number:CTP150804 Author: David Hood Original Publication Date:15th August 2004 Keywords: phonetic encoding, procedures, comparisons Last Updated: 10th December 2004 E-mail: [email protected] Original location: http://caversham.otago.ac.nz/files/working/ctp150804.pdf The Technical papers series is intended to document specific technical solutions to problems encountered within the project. It is being made available to the public in the event the techniques outlined may be of use to others. Synopsis: The original Caverphone algorithm was provide to document the phonetic matching procedures used in linking the Caversham Project databases, and to give some guidelines for those attempting similar projects. It was not intended as a general phonetic matching code. Version two of Caverphone has been created as a general purpose English phonetic matching system. Description of the problem: When the original caversham phonetic matching algorithm was made available1, it was intended to document the process used by the project and to provide some guidelines for others undertaking similar tasks. Because the rules phonetic matching were intended for a very specific database, the process of matching was able to draw on characteristics of the specific data to supplement a ‘good enough’ set of phonetic matching rules, rather than treating it as an exercise in pure phonetic matching. However, since publication of the original Caverphone working paper there has been an interest in this approach of a cascading series of rules to other data sets. The original rules were, in my opinion, not suited to this. Caverphone 2.0 has been developed as a more general phonetic match.

February 2013 From the study of Rabbi David Stern Shvat/Adar 5773 Vol. 39 No. 4 Join Us For Shabbat Could we all benefit from 15 minutes of daily prayer? Friday, February 1 rayer means something different to each of 6:15 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary the day. There is too much noise posing as information Pus, and to each of us something different in today - and minyan brings clarity. What a great return Saturday, February 2 each moment. Prayer is solitude and community, on 15 minutes of invested time! 9 a.m in Pollman Hall tranquility and celebration, comfort in sadness Whether in a time of happiness or a time of despair, Tot Shabbat and resounding song. our tradition teaches us that it is preferable to praise G-d 10:30 a.m. in Lefkowitz Chapel And for us as Jews, prayer is about people. 10:30 a.m. in the Olan Sanctuary in a community than to do so alone. The Temple Emanu Our tradition insists on a minyan, a minimum El minyan supported and honored my mourning process. Friday, February 8 quorum of ten, for the offering of the core The minyan also provides a dally opportunity to say a 6:15 p.m. in the Olan Sanctuary prayers of the liturgy, most notably the mishebeirach – which gave me an opportunity to pray Mourner’s Kaddish, traditionally recited each day for those in need of healing. The minyan is community Saturday, February 9 for a year after a loved one dies. In a beautiful 10:30 a.m.
