Dear Graduates,

Nova Southeastern University takes enormous pride in your success. On behalf of NSU’s faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees, I salute your academic and personal achievement. You have reached this milestone through hard work and intellectual effort, and we are pleased to recognize your dedication with today’s commencement ceremony.

Reflect on the gifts of knowledge and support you have received. Celebrate the friendships, skills, and strengths you have forged.

Embrace the opportunity to apply these treasures as you start a new chapter in your life, hopefully, following your passion, not your fortune.

Our best wishes are with you today and in the future.

Congratulations!

64 CLASS OF 2021 STUDENT SPEAKER

Haley Watters, who majored in exercise and sports science and minored in experiential leadership, is from Houston, Texas. During her time at NSU, she was in the Farquhar Honors College for four years, Chi Alpha Sigma for two years, Alpha Chi for two years, Phi Kappa Phi for three years, and was part of the Dual Admission Program for a doctorate in physical therapy. Additionally, as a student coordinator for Jose Antonio, Ph.D., FNSCA, FISSN, CSCS, in the International Society of Sports Nutrition, she participated in research leading to two published studies: “A Comparative Study of Body Composition Assessment Techniques: DXA and InBody 270” and “Body Composition Assessment: A Comparison of the DXA, InBody 270, and Omron.” These involved working alongside Antonio; Corey Peacock, Ph.D., CSCS, CISSN; Jonathan Banks, Ph.D.; and Jaime Tartar, Ph.D. Additionally, she worked on numerous research projects involving creatine with Antonio; Peacock; and Lia Jiannine, Ph.D., CSCS. She presented her research on “Creatine and Cognition in Trained Males” at the International Society of Sports Nutrition conference in 2020. In the process, she earned certifications from the Society of NeuroSports and Sports Nutrition and attended several Sports Neuro- science and International Society of Sports Nutrition conferences.

Outside of the classroom, she was an active member of Razor’s Edge Leadership, in which she served as the Theta class representative her senior year; President’s 64 for two years; and Shine: A Women’s Bible Study, in which she served as the member relations chair for four years. She was a scholarship athlete on the mul- tiple conference-champion NCAA women’s swim team for four years and served as service coordinator for two years. Throughout her four years, she also enjoyed serving in numerous community efforts, including Hope South Florida, Feeding South Florida, Davie Elementary x NSU Athletics’ T-shirt Drive, Special Olympics, and the MLK Weekends of Service.

Watters’ efforts also resulted in a number of awards and recognitions during her undergraduate experience. The greatest was being NSU’s 2020 endorsed Rhodes Scholar applicant. Other achievements included Razor’s Edge Leadership 2020–2021 Founder’s Awardee, NSU’s 2021 Undergraduate Student Commence- ment Speaker, Razor’s Edge Leadership 2017–2018 Leading Out Loud awardee, NSU’s 2018–2019 Freshman Student Leader of the Year, eight semesters on the Dean’s List, eight semesters on Athletics’ Director’s List, Farquhar Honors College First Week in Honors Scholarship, and the NCAA women’s swim team 2019–2020 Unsung Hero.

While Watters says she will always bleed Shark blue, she is excited to be continu- ing her education at Texas Women’s University in Houston and working toward earning a doctorate in physical therapy. Her goal is to practice as a women’s health physical therapist and to leave an impact on her community.

65 JAMES FARQUHAR AWARD RECIPIENT Ambika Kapil is a dual admission D.O. student in the Honors College majoring in biology and behavioral neuroscience. Originally from Lewisville, Texas, she was a “jack of all trades” during her time at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). She explored many avenues to build her Shark-blue experience. During her first year at NSU, she was a member of the NSU Division II rowing team and competed alongside some of the strongest women she has ever met. During her three years at NSU, Kapil immersed herself in different programs, allowing her to encour- age student involvement and growth. She served as an honors advocate and a senator for the Undergraduate Student Government Association. She also served one term as a UNIV 1000 peer leader, a Shark Preview leader, and an admis- sions ambassador. Furthermore, she was a member of the Pre-Medical Student Association, Pawsitivity, the Emerging Leaders Experience series, Indian Student Association, and the Neuroscience Club. And in true Kapil fashion, she loved exploring the Fort Lauderdale area and could be found as a volunteer tour guide at Flamingo Gardens or at the Young at Art Museum giving tours of the beautiful artwork during investment events. Kapil has also made the Dean’s List several times, received the 2020 President’s Faculty Research and Development Grant, received the First Week in Honors Scholarship, was a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Student Honors Scholarship, received the Honors Living the Values Award, and was named “Most Passionate” by the 2020–2021 Undergraduate Student Government Senate.

Along with her organization involvements, Kapil has also presented at the 2020 Fall Life Sciences South Florida Conference, the 2021 Undergraduate Student Symposium, the 2021 American Chemical Society Spring Conference, and the 2021 American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Annual Confer- ence under the guidance of Arthur K. Sikora, Ph.D., and Santanu De, Ph.D. She could also be found making her mark on NSU as she worked alongside Maeya Yeateman and Kandy Lopez-Moreno, M.F.A., on the installation of the NSU Unity Mural on the second floor of the Don Taft University Center.

The most rewarding experience of Kapil’s undergraduate career was the mentor- ships and friendships that she built and nurtured. She would like to thank Dean Karen Grosby for being her first NSU mentor and the ultimate reason that she came to NSU. She would also like to thank Wendy Boyd-Brown of the Universi- ty of North Texas; Beatrix Aukszi, Ph.D.; Lubov Nathanson, Ph.D.; Aileen Farrar, Ph.D.; Jaime Tartar, Ph.D; James Munoz, Ph.D.; Arthur K. Sikora, Ph.D.; Gary Gershman, J.D., Ph.D.; Nick Escalante; Teri Williams, Ph.D.; Brian Mayer; Robin St. George; Dean Don Rosenblum; Peggy; Megan Hseu; and her parents and sisters, Kamna Kapil, M.D.; Vivek Kapil; Avika Kapil; and Lily Kapil for being such vital parts of her undergraduate experience. She extends a hearty thanks to all of her peers, professors, and mentors who took a chance to instill important life lessons that ultimately have allowed her to build a future that she is excited to start.

In the fall of 2021, Kapil will be attending the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at NSU. She looks forward to being a physician who truly advocates for the mental and physical health of her patients.

66 CLASS OF 2021 OUTSTANDING STUDENTS ABRAHAM S. FISCHLER COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Anjali Gill, a human services administration major with minors in prehealth and entrepreneurship, is from Boulder, Colorado. While at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Gill was a member and president of Razors Edge Shark Cage, a President’s 64 Scholar for two years, a Sharks and Service coordinator and site leader, and a resident assistant. She also served as the trips and recreation chair for the Student Events and Activity Board. She received the Dean’s Scholarship and Razor’s Edge Shark Cage Scholarship and made the Dean’s List several semesters throughout her undergraduate career.

Gill fueled her passion for humanitarian service by partnering with International Volunteer HQ in the summer of 2018 to assist health professionals at a short- staffed and underfunded clinic in Wanchaq, Peru. Her love for service trips led her to become a site leader and coordinator for Sharks and Service at NSU, where she served as an educational resource and mentor for the new and current site leaders. In March 2020, she collaborated with the director of Sharks and Service to execute and fund a large-scale service trip to Quetzaltenango, Guate- mala. Gill raised more than $2,000 to help fund participants’ trips. Participants built stoves to reduce wood consumption and pollution and constructed chicken coops to promote economic development and stability. In closing out her work with Sharks and Service, Gill led a hybrid educational opportunity for students to learn about COVID-19 and its impact on the health care system.

With Gill’s minor in entrepreneurship and acceptance into the Razor’s Edge Shark Cage program, she was able to explore her love for business. She went on to pitch and create an on-campus business to increase student engagement. In August 2019, Gill opened her very own acai company, Natural Bowl, with the help of program director and mentor Cheryl Babcock, C.F.E., M.B.A., where she ran daily operations, managed, and oversaw all monetary and financial responsibili- ties. Natural Bowl not only profited monetarily but allowed Gill to gain meaning- ful customer relationships and invaluable leadership qualities.

After graduation, Gill will be continuing her education with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sonography while simultaneously obtaining a Master of Health Science from NSU’s Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences. It is her goal to work as a diagnostic medical sonographer and eventually work her way into the administrative aspect of the health care field. It is with great anticipation that Gill hopes to one day bring her work full circle and join an international agency to provide health care services across the globe.

67 OUTSTANDING STUDENTS ABRAHAM S. FISCHLER COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Vanessa Michelle Montes Castro, originally from Long Island, New York, majored in secondary mathematics education through the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. She received the honor of being recog- nized on the Dean’s List several times throughout her undergraduate career.

Before entering Nova Southeastern University, she was an active member of her church. Her participation continued throughout her time as an undergraduate. Since 2017, Montes Castro has tutored students in kindergarten through high school, which sparked her passion for education. Her family and students gave her motivation and purpose to study math education.

Montes Castro was accepted to the Fischler Academy and Razor’s Edge Shark Teach programs. These programs propelled her into a successful career and offered her unique experiences that developed her into a well-rounded aspiring educator.

As an undergraduate student, she participated in the Schooling Sharks Lesson Project. Her team won the award for Exceptional Team Performance, which included an invitation to the Sanford Inspire Conference in San Diego (2018– 2019). Another travel experience Montes Castro had through the Fischler Academy was a study abroad internship in Ireland, where she worked at a state middle and high school and gained a new perspective on international education.

Montes Castro was also engaged on campus by acting as a senior supplemental instruction leader in precalculus algebra and trigonometry (2019–2020) and as an Academic Success Coach (2020) at the Tutoring and Testing Center. She also served as treasurer of an academic club, We Achieve Via Education (2018–2021). Mike Jackson is widely regarded as one the most influential and effective automotive business leaders of our generation. Over the course of a career spanning nearly five decades, he has earned a reputation as a relentless innova- tor, with many of the initiatives he championed becoming bedrock practices across the industry today. In particular, he is known as a driving force behind retailers’ adoption of contemporary operating practices, including their embrace of online platforms, advanced technology, environmentally responsible engineer- ing, and customer-first service processes, among others.

Under his direction, AutoNation strengthened its position as the largest automo- tive retailer in the United States—in fact, the largest auto retailer in the history of U.S. car sales—with a list of milestones and metrics that are testimony to its unprecedented scale and influence. In particular, the company is the first and only automotive retailer to have sold 13 million vehicles. It is the only automotive retailer to be named America’s Most Admired Automotive Retailer by Fortune Magazine six times, and it was the first to introduce customer-focused efforts such as a green vehicle identification program, a truly transparent financing process, and a full-spectrum online car shopping experience across a national dealership network.

His success at AutoNation represents the realization of Jackson’s vision for a retail environment that combines the potential of today’s advanced technology with the best practices from a broad range of retail industries. The result has been a thorough transformation of what it means to buy, sell, and service vehicles for millions of Americans in markets from coast to coast.

In acknowledgment of his accomplishments, he has been widely honored by industry peers, journalists, the business community, academic institutions, philanthropic organizations and beyond.

Jackson is widely sought after as a speaker and media personality for his thoughts on the auto industry, in particular, and the wider economy in general. Jared Moskowitz was appointed as director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) by Governor Ron DeSantis in January 2019. During his tenure, he led the state’s response to COVID-19; hurricanes Dorian, Isaias, Laura, and Sally; as well as state responses for tropical storms, wildfires, and other events.

Under Moskowitz’s leadership, the state improved processes to provide hurricane recovery funding to cities and counties and overall sent more than $3 billion in recovery funding—the most over that time period in the division’s history.

Prior to serving as FDEM director, Moskowitz spent more than a decade in emergency management as the general counsel and vice president of business development for AshBritt Environmental. In that role, he supported response and recovery efforts for hurricanes Irma, Matthew, Michael, and Hermine; the 2017 wildfires in California; and Superstorm Sandy, which struck the northeastern United States in 2012.

Moskowitz’s foray into public service officially began in 2006, when he was elected at age 25 to the Parkland City Commission while he was a law student at the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University. He also served from 2012–2019 as state representative for District 97, representing Coral Springs, Tamarac, Sunrise, and Plantation.

Moskowitz has been a tireless advocate for school safety following the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. As the only Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate serving in the Florida Legisla- ture, he helped draft the bipartisan Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Safety Act, which was the first comprehensive mental health, school safety, and gun control bill of its kind in more than 20 years.

He and his wife are proud parents to two boys, Sam, 7, and Max, 4. Moskowitz, who was raised in South Florida, is honored to serve Floridians and their local communities in the field of emergency management.

101 ACADEMIC ATTIRE

Ceremonial garments worn at academic functions take their meaning from the original centers of learning of the western world in the church of the Middle Ages. Caps, hoods, and gowns of the early students and monks have been held through the centuries to be traditionally symbolic of the scholarly devotion so basic to educa- tion and to the deliberate and orderly evolution of knowledge.

The introduction of classical studies, the gradual rise of the great universities across Europe, and the ev- er-increasing awareness of the decisive role of education in the entire development of civilization influenced leaders among academicians in their desire for a singular identity. In the attempt to create this differentiation, educators fell upon the medieval system of classic heraldry, whereby the coat of arms, assorted ornamental trappings, and patterns of colorful design had been adopted to denote the distinctive character of designated chivalric orders. The function of a pedagogical heraldry became, then, simply identification. As such, mea- sures were taken to signify through distinctive markings on the academicians’ attire the institution that had granted the degree, the field of learning in which the degree had been earned, and the level of the degree, e.g., bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate.

Of the three pieces of academic attire—the cap, the gown, and the hood—it is the hood that offers the most abundant and most readily discernible information about its owner. The inner lining of the hood identifies the institution at which the individual earned the degree. Some schools have adopted two-color patterns and in- troduced chevrons and bars in various designs to set themselves apart from other institutions. The velvet trim bordering the hood indicates the major field of learning, or faculty, in which the degree has been earned. The list at the conclusion of this section will explain this relationship. A final feature of the hood concerns its length and width and distinguishes further between holders of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The length of the hood for the bachelor’s degree is three feet, closed at the bottom, and with a velvet border of two inch- es. At Nova Southeastern University, however, individuals receiving a bachelor’s degree do not wear a hood. A master’s degree holder has a hood three and one-half feet in length with a three-inch wide border, and the hood is slit at the bottom. Those individuals with a doctoral degree wear a hood four feet in length, open at the bottom with a five-inch border.

The cut of the gown aids in differentiating between the three levels of degrees. The bachelor’s gown is rela- tively simple and falls in straight lines from an elaborate yoke. It may be recognized most readily by the long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is somewhat fuller and bears no adornment. The sleeves are oblong in shape and open at the wrist, with the rear part of the oblong square cut while the front edge has a cutaway arc. The doctor’s gown is more elaborate, with velvet panels down the front and around the neck of the garment. The sleeves are bell-shaped at the end and have three bars of the same material as the front panels at the upper portion of the arm. It is cut rather fully and may be ornamental in color.

The mortarboard or Oxford-type cap has been adopted throughout most universities in the United States, although tams have become increasingly fashionable to denote holders of the doctoral degree. Colored tassels are usually worn by holders of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. These denote the field of learning.

102 CLASS OF 2021

The color, indeed, the flamboyance, of academic dress undoubtedly adds to the sense of occasion at aca- demic ceremonies. But as its historical roots show, it has a much deeper significance. It is an outward sign of the universality of universities, and of their responsibility for certain timeless values essential to the freedom of inquiry: tolerance of alternative views and courage in maintaining one’s own tirelessness in the pursuit of truth and the free exchange of knowledge. Its wearing marks also the responsibility of the new graduate to maintain and uphold these ideals. These fundamentals of academic freedom have not been threatened in this country for more than 200 years, but the importance attached to the donning of traditional academic dress was underlined in recent years by scholars from Central and Eastern Europe; during the Cold War, their use of academic robes became a symbol of their refusal to be dominated completely by political forces and the state, and symbolized their persistent links to the worldwide community of scholars. Thus, the wearing of academic dress should be seen not simply as a sign of achievement, but as a symbol of the responsibility that falls on all members of universities.

HONORS Students wear cords, pins, sashes, and medallions that reflect institutional and national academic honors as well as campus leadership, service, and engagement.

COLOR OF HOODS The colors found on the hoods worn in the academic procession represent the candidate’s discipline of study.

103 THE NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY MACE

HISTORY OF THE MACE During the Middle Ages, the mace was an effective weapon in battle and also was displayed as a symbol to command order during royal gatherings, religious ceremonies, and university classes. As newer and more powerful military arms were created, however, the mace progressed into a symbol of authority and today is frequently used to lead religious and academic processions.

The mace was originally a wooden staff carried by royal messengers as a symbol to preserve order and usher royal functions. The early wooden staff of such royal messengers or lead ushers of ceremonial processions was transformed in the 14th century into an elaborate sterling silver mace. Eventually, in the 15th century it evolved into a symbol of academic excellence and dignity.

THE NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY MACE Before its merger in 1994 with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences, Nova University’s mace bore a sterling silver “nova star” symbolizing the university’s name and mission. Symbolically, Nova University’s “nova star” burned brightly, providing educational enlightenment to the world. Today, a new sterling silver mace highlights the past, pres- ent, and future through the inclusion of the original “nova star” representing the university’s past, surrounding the NSU seal. When not in official use, the mace is displayed in the rotunda of the William and Norma Horvitz Administra- tion Building.

In Latin, “nova” means new or innovative. Nova Southeast- ern University was created to be an innovative educational institution—to take the best of traditional education from the past and mold it to fit the needs of students for today and tomorrow.
