  • Caverphone Revisited
Caverphone Revisited Caversham Project Occasional Technical Paper Code Number:CTP150804 Author: David Hood Original Publication Date:15th August 2004 Keywords: phonetic encoding, procedures, comparisons Last Updated: 10th December 2004 E-mail: [email protected] Original location: http://caversham.otago.ac.nz/files/working/ctp150804.pdf The Technical papers series is intended to document specific technical solutions to problems encountered within the project. It is being made available to the public in the event the techniques outlined may be of use to others. Synopsis: The original Caverphone algorithm was provide to document the phonetic matching procedures used in linking the Caversham Project databases, and to give some guidelines for those attempting similar projects. It was not intended as a general phonetic matching code. Version two of Caverphone has been created as a general purpose English phonetic matching system. Description of the problem: When the original caversham phonetic matching algorithm was made available1, it was intended to document the process used by the project and to provide some guidelines for others undertaking similar tasks. Because the rules phonetic matching were intended for a very specific database, the process of matching was able to draw on characteristics of the specific data to supplement a ‘good enough’ set of phonetic matching rules, rather than treating it as an exercise in pure phonetic matching. However, since publication of the original Caverphone working paper there has been an interest in this approach of a cascading series of rules to other data sets. The original rules were, in my opinion, not suited to this. Caverphone 2.0 has been developed as a more general phonetic match.

  • Commencement
Muskegon Community College 2021 Commencement Main Campus May 5, 2021 DRIVE-THROUGH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY May 5, 2021 Muskegon Community College Main Campus With restrictions in place to contain the coronavirus, the Muskegon Community College community has devoted months to planning this alternative and safe 2021 Commencement ceremony for its deserving graduates. The automotive procession of graduates, some joined in their vehicles by family and friends, begins in the Stevenson Center parking lot. One by one, the vehicles leave the festive atmosphere, turn right along Quarterline Road and enter the main parking lot. There, the cavalcade slowly passes by cheering MCC faculty, who flank the vehicles. They applaud their former students and offer encouragement as the College’s newest alumni enter the next chapter of their lives. When each vehicle approaches the building’s main entrance area, the graduate exits and walks toward a Commencement stage erected in the parking lot. Flashing cameras, a social media live steam and videotaping capture for posterity the graduates receiving their diplomas. The evening’s formalities began on stage with celebratory remarks by MCC President Dale K. Nesbary and MCC Board of Trustees Chair Diana Osborn, which will be added to those offered by the two MCC Alumni Award recipients and become part of the commemorative video. Present to hear every graduate’s name being read aloud are members of the Muskegon Community College Board of Trustees and the MCC Administration, donned in their formal regalia. The graduate descends from the stage, diploma in hand, and returns to the vehicle. They depart from the MCC campus with the formal recognition of having achieved an important milestone in their lives.

  • International Register (Updated March 5, 2021)
Last updated: March 5, 2021 © Mark L. DeBard, MD, Registrar & International Lilac Society Freek Vrugtman, Registrar Emeritus Assistant Registrars: Claire Fouquet, David Gressley, Tatyana Polyakova International Register and Checklist of Cultivar names in the Genus Syringa L. (Oleaceae) (“Work-in-Progress” Lilac Register) For information on title, copyright, address, table of content, acknowledgements, historical overview, and introduction see Introductory Pages. RELEASE NOTE: This release includes updates to the main Register PDF and Excel files, including a massive revision to the Russian cultivar information as a result of a detailed review by our Assistant Registrar, Tatyana Polyakova. In particular, the Latvian cultivars have been updated and many Kravchenko cultivars from Uzbekistan have been added or revised. Also, multiple cultivars from Kazakhstan as well as those of Makedonskaya and Ihara have been updated or added. In addition, the Registrars have decided to maintain the British English format of cultivar names, based on 40 years of tradition and worldwide usage of the names, while converting the text to American English. This primarily affects abbreviations in the cultivar names, such that in British English, Dr, Mr, Mrs, and Ms are all written without periods after them, but in both British and American English, Mons. and Pres. do have periods. There are actually rules governing this. This release is the basis for the identically dated printed hardcopy release of the Register. It has 3561 entries including 1223 registered lilacs (in bold), 640 more with established but non- registered names, and 669 more with non-established names. There are 1025 entries with synonyms or rejected or unacceptable names.
