The Debate Over Mixed Seating in the American Synagogue

SARNA "Pues have never yet found an historian," John M. Neale com plained, when he undertook to survey the subject of church seating for the Cambridge Camden Society in 1842. 1 To a large extent, the same situation prevails today in connection with "pues" in the American syn agogue. Although it is common knowledge that American synagogue seating patterns have changed greatly over time - sometimes following acrimonious, even violent disputes - the subject as a whole remains unstudied, seemingly too arcane for historians to bother with. 2 Seating patterns, however, actually reflect down-to-earth social realities, and are richly deserving of study. Behind wearisome debates over how sanctuary seats should be arranged and allocated lie fundamental disagreements over the kinds of social and religious values that the synagogue should project and the relationship between the synagogue and the larger society that surrounds it. As we shall see, where people sit reveals much about what they believe. The necessarily limited study of seating patterns that follows focuses only on the most important and controversial seating innovation in the American synagogue: mixed (family) seating. Other innovations - seats that no longer face east, 3 pulpits moved from center to front, 4 free (un assigned) seating, closed-off pew ends, and the like - require separate treatment. As we shall see, mixed seating is a ramified and multifaceted issue that clearly reflects the impact of American values on synagogue life, for it pits family unity, sexual equality, and modernity against the accepted Jewish legal (halachic) practice of sexual separatiop in prayer. -

Wise presents an excellent subject for the study of Jewish social progressivism in Portland in the early years of the twentieth-century. While Wise demonstrated a commitment to social justice before, during, and after his Portland years, it is during his ministry at congregation Beth Israel that he developed a full-fledged social program that was unique and remarkable by reaching out not only within his congregation but more importantly, by engaging the Christian community of Portland in interfaith activities. -

BERNHARD FELSENTHAL: THE ZIONIZATION OF A RADICAL REFORM RABBI Leon A. Jick This article traces Bernhard Felsenthal's ideological and institutional odyssey from extreme radical Reform to committed Zionism. In theface of theoverwhelming opposition of his Reform colleagues, Felsenthal endorsed and embraced the nascent Zionist movement and devoted his final years to its support. The last half of the nineteenth century was a time of turbulent ideological ferment. Amidst radical social, economic and political change, new ideologies sprouted and fractured into competing factions. Buffeted by the tides of unanticipated consequences indi vidual thinkers and activists frequently changed their positions and their affiliations. Moses Hess moved from a variety of socialisms to proto-Zionism, and Leon Pinsker from Russian assimilation to Jew ? ish nationalism. Nussan Birnbaum at one time a chief secretary to Herzl, drifted from Zionism to become general secretary of Agudat a as a en Yisrael with stopover diaspora nationalist route. Herzl himself was a convert to Zionism. The most obvious Jewish example is the Chatam Sofer whose dictum chadash asur min hatorah "innovation is forbidden from the Torah" forbade any change however trivial in traditional practice. The overwhelming preponderance of the leaders of radical Re form Judaism in Germany and in America falls into the latter category. -

March 2014 Adar I/Adar II 5774 Vol. 40 No. 4 The Purim Into the Paradigm Future The civil calendar month of March brings us the Hebrew calendar month of Adar, and with Temple builds for the next half century it all the topsy-turvy joy of Purim. Whether —and counting! Purim’s silliness strikes you as just right or a bit alien, the bottom line is that Purim’s zaniness Pages 12-13 is serious stuff. On Purim we are commanded to mirth and merriment, we wear costumes, students can get away with making fun of teachers, underlings with mocking their superiors. We read from Megillat Esther, the Scroll of Esther, one of the only books in the Hebrew Bible which Rabbi does not mention God. Just David Stern as Haman ends up dangling from the tree he intended for Mordechai, Purim is a day of gleeful reversals. On an anthropological level, Purim is our Jewish version of similar holidays in other cultures, like Mardi Gras or Dia de Los Muertos, where disorder is the order of the day, and the disruption of the usual proprieties provides joy and relief. By Max Nordau 9 Anti-Semitism in Europe By Gustav Gottheil. 47 ZIONISM BY Max Nordau ZIONISM Among the persons of the educated classes who follow with any attention all the more important movements of the times, it would now be difficult to find one to whom the word "Zionism" is quite unknown. People are generally aware that it describes an idea and a movement that in the last years has found numerous adherents among the Jews of all countries, but especially among those of the East. Comparatively few, however, both among the Gentiles and the Jews themselves, have a perfectly clear notion of the aims and ways of Zionism; the Gentiles, because they do not care sufficiently for Jewish affairs to take the trouble to inform themselves at first hand as to the particulars; the Jews, because they are intentionally led astray by the enemies of Zionism, by lies and calumnies, or because even among the fervent Zionists there are not many who have probed the whole Zionist idea to the bottom, and are willing or able to present it in a clear and comprehensible fashion, without exaggeration and polemical heat. I will endeavor to furnish readers of good faith, who are not biased, and have no other interest than that of gaining authentic information about a phenomenon in contemporary history, as concisely and soberly as possible with all the facts, as they really are, not as they are reflected in muddled brains, or distorted and falsified by calumniators. -

RICHARD J. H. GOTTHEIL 1862-1936 RICHARD J. H. GOTTHEIL A Biographical Sketch By Louis I. NEWMAN In April, 1925, Professor Richard James Horatio Gottheil was sent by Columbia University as delegate to the dedica- tion of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jeru- salem. He bore with him a message from Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia. After reading this in the Latin in which it was written, Professor Gottheil proceeded to translate it into Hebrew. No incident in his long career was a more accurate symbol of the interests of the great Semitics scholar and Jewish communal leader who passed away in New York City, May 22, 1936. Richard Gottheil was born at Manchester, England, October 13, 1862, his mother being Rosalie Wollman, his father, the distinguished Rabbi Gustav Gottheil, then minister of the Manchester Congregation of British Jews. In "The Life of Gustav Gottheil: Memoir of a Priest in Israel" (The Bayard Press, 1936), Professor Gottheil has given many informative details regarding his own child- hood and youth. He received his early education at Chorl- ton High School, England, and, on his father's removal to this country in 1873 to become Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York City, he continued his studies at Columbia Grammar School, which, many years later, was destined to come under the leadership of George Alexander Kohut, whose tribute to Professor Gottheil in the Columbia Uni- versity Quarterly* is one of the authoritative sources of our knowledge regarding him. In 1881, he was awarded an A. B. degree at Columbia College, the institution with which his name was to be linked for one year less than half a century.
