February 2014 Tevet/Sh’vat 5774 Vol. 40 No. 3 Music Around Blessings Emanu-El in the Pages 10-11 Unexpected

I had finally arrived to the place that would be my home for my junior year of college. Burst into song; And what a beautiful place it was--the campus of the University of Haifa, nestled within the Sing with joy; Carmel Mountains, overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. When I stepped out of Play music! the taxi with my two huge duffel bags, I was dizzy with a mixture of excitement and sleep Psalm 98:4 deprivation. After all the travel, I was ready to settle into my dorm room and fall fast asleep. But when I tried the door to the main entrance, it was locked. I pressed the button for the “house mother” named Chava. There was no answer. I kept pressing it, but there was Kimberly still no answer. Nobody was in Herzog Cohen sight, as most residents were home for Shabbat. To top it off, I didn’t yet have a phone to call someone, and I hardly spoke a word of Hebrew at that point. Panic. This was not what I expected. I turned to the only soul I knew in Haifa—my philanthropytaxi driver d fromw¨c ¨Benv§ Gurion airport, Yair. “Ain baiyah (no problem),” he said. “I will take you to a hotel in Hadar—the heart of the city— :UrNzu UbBru U jmP and you will stay there.” Sounded good to (see page 18) philanthropy dw¨c¨v§ prayer d¨Nt¦ Y§ Community Learning BurstPrayer into song;Philanthropy Rededication of Lunch & Literature Service of Welcome for Contributions Czech Torah Scrolls Class philanthropyCantor d Lesliew¨c¨v§ Niren PAGE 15 learning PAGE 2 prayer PAGE 13 SingPAGE 3 with joy; Connectdx¨F Ywith d¨Nt¦ Y§ Shabbat Services Sh’ma Emanu-El PAGE 7 PAGE 18 Play music! community d¨Nd¦ w§ learning dx¨FY prayer d¨Nt¦ Y § philanthropy dw¨c¨v§ Psalm 98:4 ic©in¦ §lY© n¦ E iz© FAx©n¥ xz¥ Fi ix©ia¥g£n¥E iz© FAx©n¥ iY¦ c§n© ¨l dA¥x§d© community d¨Nd¦ w§ learning dx¨FY prayer d¨Nt¦ Y§ ic©in¦ §lY© n¦ E iz© FAx©n¥ xz¥ Fi ix©i.a¥o¨lg£EMn¥nE¦ izx© zF¥AFxi©n¥ iY¦ c§n© ¨l dA¥x§d© community d¨Nd¦ w§ learning dx¨FY ic©in¦numbers§lY© n¦ Eg i z© mFAixx¦©R¨n¥q§ xn¦z¥ Fi ix©.ioa¥¨lg£EMn¥n¦E ixz©z¥FAFix©n¥ iY¦ c§n© ¨l dA¥x§d© community d¨Nd¦ w§

EVENTS Saving a Legacy Temple Participates in Rededication of Czech Torah Scrolls.

Temple is participating in a local and international celebration of rededication of the Czech Memorial Torah Scrolls. A total of 1,564 scrolls, including those now at Bridwell Library at SMU and at Temple, were recovered in Prague after World War II. They were dedicated in 1964 and will be commemorated this month with a 50th anniversary Service of Rededication at Westminster in London. Temple’s scroll, which hails from Klatovy in southwestern Czech Republic, was received by Temple in 1976. It is #726 and was written in 1880, according to the Czech Memorial Trust. It has distinctive curlicues in many of the letters that are known as a “kabbalistic font” believed to date back to the 17th century. Examples of the lettering and special verses are on display in the hallway outside the Jacobus Archives. Observances
