Preface

Volhynia, Volynia, or Volyn is a historic region in Eastern Europe straddling , , and . The alternate name for the region is Lodomeria after the city of Volodymyr-Volynsky (Vo-Lodymer) that once was a political capital of the medieval Volhynian Principality.

The ancient city of Halych first appears in history in 981 when taken over by of the Kievan Rus. Volhynia's early history coincides with that of the duchies or principalities of Halych and Volhynia. These two successor states of the Kievan Rus formed Halych-Volhynia between the 12th and the 14th centuries.

After the disintegration of the Grand Duchy of Halych-Volhynia (also called Galich-Vla- dimir Rus) circa 1340, the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania divided up the region between them, Poland taking Western Volhynia and Lithuania Eastern Volhynia (1352-1366). After 1569 Volhynia formed a province of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During this period Poles and Jews settled in the area. The Roman and Greek Catholic churches became established in the province, and many Orthodox churches joined the later, so as to benefit from a more attractive legal status. Records of the first agricultural colonies of Mennonites date from 1783.

After the Third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 Volhynia be- came the Volhynian of the and covered an area of 71,852.7 square kilometers. This annexation changed greatly the religious make-up of the area, as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was forcibly liquidated by the Russian government, the ownership of all of its building being transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Many Roman Catholic Church buildings were also given to the Russian Church, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of was suppressed on orders of Empress Catherine II.

In the year of 1897 its population amounted to 2,989,482 persons (41.7 per square kilome- ter) and consisted of 73.7 percent East Slavs (predominantly Ukrainians), 13.2 percent Jews, 6.2 percent Poles, and 5.7 percent Germans. Most of the German settlers had immi- grated from Congress, Poland. A small number of Czech settlers also had arrived. Alt- hough economically the area was developing rather quickly, upon the eve of the First World War, it was still the most rural province in Western Russia. [1]

Volhynia on a map of present day Ukraine [2]

For centuries Volhynia had belonged to the Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was later ac- quired by Poland, through a marriage of royalty. In the first partition of Poland in 1772, the region was annexed by Russia. It stayed part of Russia until after World War I. The Treaty of Versailles in 1920 split Volhynia in half. The east remained part of Russia while the west was returned to Poland. After World War II, the entire region of Volhynia was made part of Ukraine, which in turn was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

There were Germans scattered throughout Volhynia, primarily in the Zhitomir and Ber- dichev regions. Mennonites attempted an early farming settlement there but did not stay long. The first major and more permanent migration of Germans into Volhynia did not occur until the mid-1830s. These were primarily of the Lutheran faith. By 1860, the Ger- man population was still only estimated to be 4-6000.

After the 1863 rebellion in Poland, Germans began to flood into Volhynia. Most of them settled in a broad band extending from Wladimir Wolhynsk in the west to half way between Zhitomir and Kiev in the east. By 1900, census figures indicate there were approximately 200,000 Germans living there. In addition to Lutherans, many of these were now Baptist, Catholic, Mennonite, Moravian, and Reformed.

Volhynia was annexed to Soviet Ukraine after the end of World War II. Most of the re- maining ethnic Polish population were expelled to Poland in 1945. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Volhynia has been an integral part of the Ukraine. [1]

Hay: 24 May 1903 – 24 Jun 1987

Kenneth Carl Hintz was born on July 31, 1905 in St. Joseph, Michigan. After the family moved to Mishawaka, Indiana, he left school in the eighth grade (~1919) to help at home with expenses. Those growing up years were not easy but he did the right things that fit the times. In 1928 he married Florine Marie Accoe. Living in Mishawaka, Indiana they were blessed with six children. But life was not to be easy. Between the years of 1935 and 1941 Kenneth buried his father, brother, and two daughters, along with saying good-by to his wife of thirteen years. As a young man of thirty-seven years he was now left to raise his three boys and daughter ranging in ages eleven, ten, four, and one year – eight months.

After being offered, by many relatives, to take certain ones of the four children into their homes, Kenneth decided that although they were a fractured family, they were still a fam- ily. They were to stay together. After a short time Kenneth’s mother (Amelia Schadler Hintz) came to take care of the family, because she knew her son “needed” her. This was not an easy decision for a widow aged 60 to make. Especially after raising six children of her own.

Kenneth worked for, and retired from, the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend, Indiana. He died on February 17, 1989 and was buried with his family in St. Joseph Catholic Cem- etery in Mishawaka following funeral services held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. [19]

Her family had immigrated to the United States from Eeklo, Bel- gium only about one year before her birth. On August 28, 1928 she married Kenneth Carl Hintz in South Bend, Indiana. They would have six children but two would not survive beyond a very early age. She died abruptly on August 26, 1941 after a short illness, leaving a family of four small children. After funeral services at St. Joseph's Catholic Church she was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Mishawaka with her daughters, Shirley and Joanne. [20]

12 DRAFT: 04 MAY 2020

Anna W. Hay – second wife of Kenneth C. Hintz Anna Wolowicz Hay was the second wife of Kenneth Hintz. She was born in Warren, Massachusetts on May 24, 1903 but spent most of her life in the Mishawaka, Indiana area. Anna worked for the Studebaker Corporation for several years. She married Kenneth Carl Hintz on November 20, 1956. Anna died in St. Paul's Health Care Center in South Bend, Indiana on Wednesday, June 24, 1987. Following a service at the Hahn De Vos Funeral Home in Mishawaka she was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Mishawaka. [21]

Tragedy struck in 1956 when their only son died after contracting Bulbar Polio. Charles left behind a wife and infant daughter. Grace died on September 24, 2002 in the Santa Cruz Health Center, Santa Cruz, California. She was buried with Ted in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana. [22]
