Smith [123935]1 was born on 28 Oct 1808 in Sandy Lake, New York, USA2 and died on 9 Sep 1883 in Sumpter, Wayne, Michigan, USA3 at age 74. The cause of his death was old age.3 General Notes: Possibly: SMITH, J. R., farmer, Parish, b. Oswego, N.Y., s 1808, p.o. add. Parish (probably not as there is a James R. Smith that matches this description and has a different wife) There is a John Smith living next-door to John Thurston in Vernon, Oneida, New York and has one son living with him age 16+ (which would be a couple of years off from John). However, the proximity to the Thurston family makes it a good chance that this is John R. Smith's father. If that's the case, then John R. Smith's father is also a John Smith, who was 45+ in 1820 so would be born before 1775. Son Francis' death certificate: Says he was born in New York City There is a Sandy Creek in Oswego County, not a Sandy Lake. Sand Lake in Rensselaer County A Sand Bank In a St. Lawrence County Methodist Church marriage list, there is a groom born in Sandy Lake, NY and bride born in Gouverneur, NY in 1918 by pastor J. Hascall - one mention of a Sandy Lake. Verification of the newspaper article shows that it was really Sand Lake, NY. Alternate birth date listed as 29 Sep 1808. He is NOT in the list of baptisms for the Zion Lutheran / Evangelical in West Sandlake, New York 1830 Census: Most likely in Vernon, Oneida, New York - same town as John Thurston and there is a John Smith head of household that matches the age and one female 20-30 (which would be slightly older for Eliza Thurston if her birth year was correct) 20 Oct 1835 Land Patent Certificate # 1705 Act of 24 Apr 1820 John Elwell of Monroe County, New York bought SW corner of SW section 3, Sumpter Township, 40 acres Sumpter Tract Book 20 Oct 1835, recorded 23 Sep 1944 L 1792 P 222, C 785750, SW 1/4 of SW 1/4, contg. 40 acres 1840 Census: count: 11000100000001200100000000 Granby, Oswego, New York Lives near John Thurston 2 employed in agriculture 1 (or 0) employed in commerce 1850 Census: 22 Aug 1850 Sumpter, Wayne, Michigan $500 of real estate cannot read/write 1 Produced by Legacy Descendants of John R. • The Horan Family Diaspora Since Leaving Ireland 191 Years Ago
A Genealogical Report on the Descendants of Michael Horan and Mary Minnock by A.L. McDevitt Introduction The purpose of this report is to identify the descendants of Michael Horan and Mary Minnock While few Horans live in the original settlement locations, there are still many people from the surrounding areas of Caledon, and Simcoe County, Ontario who have Horan blood. Though heavily weigh toward information on the Albion Township Horans, (the descendants of William Horan and Honorah Shore), I'm including more on the other branches as information comes in. That is the descendants of the Horans that moved to Grey County, Ontario and from there to Michigan and Wisconsin and Montana. I also have some information on the Horans that moved to Western Canada. This report was done using Family Tree Maker 2012. The Genealogical sites I used the most were Ancestry.ca, Family Search.com and Automatic Genealogy. While gathering information for this report I became aware of the importance of getting this family's story written down while there were still people around who had a connection with the past. In the course of researching, I became aware of some differences in the original settlement stories. I am including these alternate versions of events in this report, though I may be personally skeptical of the validity of some of the facts presented. All families have myths. I feel the dates presented in the Land Petitions of Mary Minnock and the baptisms in the County Offaly, Ireland, Rahan Parish registers speak for themselves. Though not a professional Genealogist, I have the obligation to not mislead other researchers.

  • Jones and Mary Bell
Family of Robert Jones and Mary Bell compiled by John A. Brebner for the Friends of Sandbanks 26th October, 2020 Generation One 1. Robert Jones #75254, b. c. 1780 in County Armagh, Ireland,1,2 occupation Farmer in Hillier Township, d. 30 August 1870 in Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario,1,2 buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario.2 . The Jones Family Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904; (pages 447 - 452) "Born in the County of Armagh, Ireland, in 1780, of Welsh-Irish parentage, Robert Jones, the pioneer of the Jones family in Prince Edward County, belonged to a class of farmers in Ireland, though heavily handicapped as lease- holders and often rack-rented, have always given a good account of themselves. To Robert was given as good an education as his prospects demanded and the times permitted; and he also received a thoroughly good agricultural training on the family homestead, until he was of age to begin farming on his own account. This he did, at the same time marrying Mary Bell, the daughter of a neighbouring farmer, and of the same age as himself. The farm he chose was cultivated by him for twenty years, during which time all his sons and daughters, to the number of eleven, were born. "His determination to emigrate was not prompted by failure to succeed in farming in Ireland, but rather to the need he felt of securing a much larger holding for himself and his sons, and one that he should hold on better terms.

  • Mcdonald, New Brunswick and Prince Edward County
Family of Daniel McDonald, New Brunswick and Prince Edward County compiled by John A. Brebner for the Friends of Sandbanks 29 March 2021 Generation One 1. Daniel/David McDonald #67333, b. c. 1755? in Scotland? . From "Pioneer Life in the Bay of Quinte", 1904 "The McDonald Family." "The ancestors of this family came originally from Scotland from which country they fled at the time of the massacre of Glencoe *; eventually their descendants located in New Brunswick in the early days of the settlement of that province. Here were born David, Henry, John, William, Daniel, George, James, Alexander, Francis, Nancy and Susan; all of whom appeared to have emigrated to Prince Edward County and to have settled in or near Hallowell directly after the War of 1812." Local lore suggests that there were fewer children, but based on the McDonald families in Hallowell Township whose ancestry suggest both a New Brunswick birthplace, as well as their common religious beliefs within the Church of Christ Disciple at West Lake, the "Pioneer Life..." extract from 1901 is more likely... This is very much a genealogy in progress. There are many "loose ends", folks that seem to have disappeared from both Ontario and the United States. One of the major problems in tracing descendants of this family is that they often used their middle names, or nick-names later in life, rather than the first names that appear on their birth certificates, or in early census data. Daniel arrived in Prince Edward County after the War of 1812 from New Brunswick with five (more likely) sons and three daughters * (see conflicting data from above source).

  • Fifth Generation
131 VERMILYEA GENEALOGY FIFTH GENERATION 97 AUSTIN Aeltie Vermilyea5, (Isaac4, John3, Isaac2, Johannes1) born November 24, 1756, married in 1773 at Yonkers, New York Thomas, son of Thomas and Abigail (Wilsea) Austin, who was born in 1752 at Yonkers, New York, died between 1792 and 1800 at Yonkers, New York. She died January 25, 1835 probably in or near New York City, and was buried in the Dyckman/Nagel Cemetery, Manhattan, New York. Source Codes #638 and #725. The Dutch girl's name "Aeltje" has no direct equivalent in English, but "Alice" is the most common translation. In Aeltje's case, it is clear that she was known by the sound-alike form Aleda or Eleda; her gravestone calls her Elida, and her grandson Isaac Vermilyea Austin named a daughter Elada. Thomas Austin is called "Thomas Austin, weaver," to distinguish him from his father, who is called "Thomas Austin, laborer. He died at Yonkers sometime between 1792 (their son Jacob M. was born 1793) and 1800, when his widow "Aulay" Austin appears as family head in that year's census; the listing (10000-01010) indicates that Aeltje was then living with only her son Jacob M. and her daughter, the older boys apparently boarding with other families. In the Yonkers tax lists for 1801 and 1802, she appears as "Alada" Austin, listed alongside her widowed mother Susannah (Meyer) Vermilyea. By 1807, Aeltje and her two youngest children had removed to New York City, where her older sons were already living. She appears in the New York City Directory for 1808 as "Alice Austin, widow," residing at Bowery, 2 mile stone; "William Austin, carpenter," Aeltje's son, is shown at the same address.

Johannes Gelderloos (b.1909) began to collect the Gelderloos family data, and his son Hendrik (Henk) Gelderloos (b.1939) continued the project after his passing in 1990. Henk has graciously shared his data with me and many other family members who have contacted him for the information. I have always had an interest in genealogy, but the pressures of work and family prevented me from concentrating on the hobby. One of my retirement goals was to work more diligently on developing the family tree to an even greater extent. It has and continues to be a source of enjoyment. Although the Dutch component of the family tree was quite complete, I have been able to research some of the records in the Netherlands, and made contact with some family members living in the Netherlands who helped me add some data to that branch of the tree. The United States branch of the family is where I could lend my greatest assistance to the completion of the tree. Many family members and those of the extended family contributed much of the data.
