This “creative capital of the 21st Century” is always a favorite destination of Art Guild travelers. This time, we’ll be among the first to visitThe Broad, the highly anticipated new downtown museum, and the retrospective exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, both opening in September. We’ll be there to see how California’s own “stars” in both art and have been inspired by the dynamism of the city they call home!

Designed by Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, the façade ofThe Broad’s 120,000 square foot building is based upon an innovative “veil and vault” concept featuring two floors of gallery space, one above and one below vast storage space — all surrounded by a porous, “honeycomb” exterior. It will be home to the 2000 piece collection of philanthropists, Edythe and , which includes works by some 200 artists; among them are , , Ed Ruscha, , Jeff Koons and Michel Basquiat. ’s Infinity Mirrored Room . . . is just one of the notable installations created by luminaries from around the world and earning The Broad’s ranking among the most prominent postwar and contemporary collections, worldwide.

The Story of California. The Story of Yo u. ARTOakland MuseumGUILD of California TRAVEL Joining us to explore the city’s innovative architecture will be Frances Anderton, UK born and educated writer, editor and radio host. Having written for numerous design and architecture publications, she and Frank Gehry co-taught a “studio” at USC’s School of Architecture which explored decades of flawed planning efforts on downtown L.A.’s Grand Avenue. Her continued association with Gehry makes her eminently qualified to speak with authority on his work and how his vision has impacted the architectural landscape of the city. Throughout our “coach tour,” Frances will comment on projects that showcase Gehry’s mark on the city’s architectural landscape over many years. Among them, we’ll see the uniquely renovated exterior of his 70’s home which became an icon as well as an “autobiographical statement marking the beginning of his international recognition.” The Broad Photo: Iwan Baan A short walk from The Broad takes us to architect, Frank Gehry’s iconic Disney Concert Hall; proximity serves to highlight the contrast between Gehry’s bright stainless steel exterior and The Broad’s unique design response. This architectural landmark, home to the L.A. Philharmonic, is one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world; we’ll enjoy an architectural tour of its five levels including Rose Fountain, Blue Ribbon Garden Photo: John O’Neill the lush, rooftop Blue Ribbon Garden. Walt Disney Concert Hall Frank Gehry design Photo: Tim Street-Porter Our itinerary includes a private tour of the newly opened retrospective exhibition, Frank Gehry, at LACMA. It examines his extraordinary body of work from the early ‘60’s to the present, featuring over 200 drawings and 65 models that chronicle the evolution of Gehry’s creative thought process. The show traces the Pritzker prize winner’s career with a focus on two main themes: urbanism and the development of new systems of digital design, fabrication and materials. Here is our opportunity to “get inside” one of architecture’s great minds and one of L.A.’s cultural icons!

Look forward to visits with ceramist, Kathy Butterly, at Shashana Wayne Gallery, followed by Frank Gehry, Model 1977-78 and 1991-94, Santa Monica, California a stop at the gallerists’ home to explore their collection. We’ll also visit the Santa Monica studio MAK–Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, Vienna © 2015 Gehry Parnters, LLP of Tony Berlant who, throughout his successful career, has used pieces of tin affixed to plywood Photo: © 2015 Gerald Zugmann/MAK to craft intricately detailed, wildly colorful collages resembling “energized” paintings. In Venice, we’ll meet Mollie Favour whose work is focused on nature-inspired painting and pastels; her “reverence for discovery and interconnectedness” is echoed in her art. Interestingly, her husband, Brad Miller’s ceramic work also speaks of nature’s patterning and ordering system using very different media. AtAnna Silver’s L.A. studio, ceramic vessels walk the line between classical and modern, functional and decorative; bright, abstract biomorphic forms cover the surfaces.

Our final stop will be at the campus ofOtis College of Art and Design; established Kathy Butterly Frill Seeker in 1918, it remains a national leader in art and design education. There, we’ll be joined © Shashana Wayne Gallery Ralph Bacerra C l o u d V e s s e l Collection of Sharon and by art and design historian, Jo Lauria, Curator of Exquisite Paul Dauer Beauty . . ., the first retrospective of the dazzling ceramic work Photo: Anthony Cunha of Ralph Bacerra, known for his innovative approach to surfaces and highly decorated vessels and . His career spanned five decades and in the tradition of visionaries, Robert Arneson, Viola Frey and Peter Voulkos, he challenged ceramic conventions by creating “a new grammar of ornament.” While at Otis, we’ll meet with Professor of Ceramics and Product Design, Joan Takayama Ogawa, who will lead our tour at the college.
