8349 Arts Sponsorship_Palladium_5.5x8.5.indd 1 8/19/19 9:09 AM DIRECTORS’ NOTE Four hundred and twelve days ago, we shut down production of A FEW GOOD MEN three hours before the opening performance. It was the single most difficult moment in our careers at Civic Theatre. For an institution that has operated continuously since 1914, the fact that we have not had a traditional production with an in-person audience for 412 days is both astounding and devastating. Through two World Wars, the 1918 Spanish Flu and the attacks of September 11, 2001, we have persisted. But, for good reason, the worldwide pandemic brought on by COVID-19, stopped us in our tracks…. for a few days.

Since late March 2020, the incredible staff, volunteers, parents, donors and patrons of Civic Theatre have doubled down on their commitment to our survival and a very necessary re-invention. Many plans have been made and scrapped, but the work never stopped. The creativity never stopped. The commitment to excellence never stopped. There were countless Zoom meetings. We learned new skills and upgraded our technical capabilities to bring you virtual content that was proficient and professional. We stumbled and got up again many, many times. In then end this pause in normal operations gave us many gifts that we believe will believe will change the way we do many things for the better and for years to come.

We cannot say enough about the administrative, educational and creative teams here at Civic. Their tireless work to help the organization stay relevant, to adjust to the challenges was and is inspiring. We have all dug deep into the well and found new strengths and a renewed love for our jobs. To our volunteer performers, our instructors and our contractors, we offer profound gratitude. When we called, you didn’t just answer, you committed to bring your best effort to the situation, and that is among the many reasons we are still here.

All these difficulties and triumphs have brought us to this moment. The moment when we can welcome you back to our home and again create this amazing circumstance that requires the physical presence of both the artists and the audience. We have missed doing this for you. And while we mourn the deep losses we have all experienced during this difficult time, we celebrate our return and your return. LIGHT ON THE HORIOZON represents all we have learned and experienced these past months and all the possibilities for the coming years. Thank you for your love and support and welcome home!
