1 ROCKET: Do you· resent being known as a brother of the Bee Gees? . GIBB: I really don't feel : that anymore. I used to feel that a I ittle bit, twinges of it, when I would always get billed as the brother of. the Bee Gees in all my shows. That went on for a while and I sort of had to expect it-them being famous and me not. And being their only youngest brother. I didn't complain. I think that's going to fade away eventually because my . first album went so well.
22 ROCKET: Did it surprise you to have a· number one stngle on. your very first album? · GIBB: Oh God yes! It was incredible. When ·1 first did the song I was confident, I thought it was an.umber one song. But it's really hard to ac cept the fact that I could ·have a number one record myself. ROCKET: When you ·write a song do . you have someone specific in mind? GIBB: Not really. Actually, nobody was in mind for "Everything."· My brother Barry wrote that We were all sitting in Bermuda at our manager's house. And we sat down and wrote four together, of which one was "Love is Thicker Than. Water'' and Barry was strumming in the back ground doing "I Just Want to be Your Everything." And we knew in stantly that it was a r:,umber one record. He put the lyrics to it later that night. ROCKET: Are your songs personal statements on ·1ove? GIBB: Not really, not so much. on this album. You can get to the top in Australia and never get heard outside the country which is a shame. I had a record out there. ·1 ROCKET: How do you cope with a sudden burst of fame? , l : GIBB: I just try to keep my head to gether, keep level headed about it. Keep on going. It's been incredible, it really has. ROCKET: You're a special type of star_;the sort who will get the very enthusiastic fans .. Are you b.esieged? GIBB: Yes, but luckily they don't know where I live! I don't have any hassles with people coming around. But phone calls all the time. I pick up the phone and either they hang up, or they giggle. Giggling for afew minutes. It goes on all the time even into the early hours of the morning. I usually get it worse on tour. That's when it becomes unbearable. ROCKET: And on stage? GIBB: They worry me sometimes. They get so much emotion inside them. Crying. It's emotional to see them from the stage. It's hard to sing and watch them at the same time. To see kids at that age crying -that much broken up over a con cert-it makes me feel pretty strange. They lose their mind and get hyster ical-it's really frightening some times. It is not exceptional for the youngest member of a musically gifted family to follow in the footsteps of his older brothers. It is uncommon in the case of Andy Gibb however, to grow up the brother of the prestigious Bee Gees, and yet develop a style so distinct and uniquely his. It is equally uncommon for anyone at this stage of his life to possess a talent so mature. Andy's striking presence combines both the romance of youth and the confi9ence of sophisticated musical creativity. His sensitive lyrics and. unpretentious manner convey a charm that wil_l steal every yo~ng girl's heart. At the same time, his tightly woven arrangements and country-rock style express the self-assured sa.vvy of a musician whose career has finally begun to take its turn. It would be safe to assume that Andy's extraordinary background has made some contribution to his precocious development. The path that his life has taken is hardly the usual one. there in 1975. Playing his own material as we.11 as old Bee .Gees numbers, Andy formed a group that toured all over the country, taking billings with groups like Sweet and The Bay ) . City Rollers. One might easily get the impression that Andy would be jaded by such good fortupe-but_he is not one to stand back and let life come to him. On the contrary, anyone who has met Andy immediately recognizes the vitality with which he embraces every experience. Indeed, each song he writes reveals the importance he attac~es to what is otherwise.a :fleeting moment. The profound feeling of Andy's songs is rarely seen in any writer, let alone one of eighteen. cording. so~e of his material in Australia, there was no question that he was more than ready to put together his first album. Robert Stigwood was quick to appreciate his ability and they signed a recording aI.ld management contract in 1976. Signing with Robert Stigwood had set into motion a

wave of events that carried Andy's career still one step further. Firstly, there was a reunion with his brother Barry who he had not seen in several years. Never before was Andy able to relate to his brother on equal ground as a proven musician with ar1 identity all his own. It was an exhilarating experience for each of them, both personally and professionally, and together they headed for the recording studio in Miami. There, at Criteria Studios, with Barry assisting the production, Andy recorded two songs which they wrote together, along with eight others he•had written himself. The momentum which had begun when Andy left Australia continued as he started his work at Criteria. The country-ropk fee_]. which characterized his music, has been expanded with a sophisticated rhythm and blues quality. With guitar and keyboards predominating in most songs, Andy's vocals take on an evocative and mesmerizing nature which draws the listener into his sensitive lyrics and compelling rhythms. Andy's albumentitied, "Flowing Rivers" will be released by RSO Reco~ds in th~ near future. Andy Gibb is a musician w.hose talents coincide with the high standards of other artists on the RSO Records roster. The company's main concern is to develop themseives as a unique and selective label, and regard Andy as a fr~sh and in.spiring addition to their company.
