The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation was founded in 1971 by a small group of parents of children with diabetes who were committed to finding a cure for this devastating disease. Driven by hope and fueled by the need to end their children’s suffering, they banded together to support a promising research program at the University of Miami solely aimed at curing those living with diabetes. This singular goal remains today.

2008 annual report 1 Message from the Chairman and President Responding to a parent’s question about the focus of the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation, a long-time board member pointedly stated: “We want to turn off the lights.” In other words, we aim to put ourselves out of business by fulfilling our mission to discover a cure for diabetes.

You would undoubtedly hear a similar response from any other board member, scientist, clinician or Foundation professional, as this has been our singular goal since the inception of the organization more than three decades ago.

6 DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOUNDATION 2008 annual report 7 To our donors with sincere gratitude…

The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation wishes to gratefully acknowledge all of our donors, whose generosity helps keep hope alive for the millions of children and adults who suffer with diabetes. Your ongoing support allows DRI scientists to continue their pursuit of a cure through so many promising scientific initiatives.

Every year, many new donors join the DRI family. While every gift, no matter the size, helps move us closer to a cure for this disease, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our major contributors, whose unwavering dedication and unparalleled generosity has truly helped make progress possible. The individuals, corporations and foundations listed below have given selflessly throughout the history of this organization. Their names appear in the corresponding giving levels.

Again, we extend our sincere gratitude to all of our donors for their continued support of the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation.

2008 annual report 13 The Heritage Society The Heritage Society of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation was created to recognize individuals who have generously made provisions in their wills, through life insurance, charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities, or other deferred giving vehicles to ensure that critical funding for the Diabetes Research Institute continues into the future. Over the years, planned giving programs have enabled many donors to make substantial gifts to the DRI in ways that have complemented their individual financial objectives.

Heritage Society members have chosen to create their own personal legacies and perpetuate their philanthropic goals for all those affected by diabetes. The following list includes those members of the Heritage Society through December 31, 2008.
