International Jazz Day 2013 Special Message
30 APRIL: INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2013 SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MR AHMET DAVUTOGLU, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND MR OMER CELIK, MINISTER OF CULTURE AND TOURISM Turkey welcomes the opportunity to host UNESCO’s International Jazz Day on 29‐30 April, 2013, in Istanbul. This will be the first celebration to be held outside of the United Nations Headquarters. On this occasion, we shall celebrate jazz music not only as a global language of human soul, but also that of more inclusive societies, mutually enhancing civilisations, and UNESCO ideals. Jazz music fascinated the two sons of Mehmet Münir Ertegün, the second Turkish Ambassador of the Republican era to the United States of America. Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegün brothers co‐founded the legendary Atlantic Records together with Herb Abramson in 1947. Arif Mardin, another legendary music producer from Turkey, served along with them in the company. These three Turkish‐American jazz connoisseurs and pioneers, all born and bred in Istanbul, left an outstanding musical legacy of true global reach, spanning from the United States to Egypt and the rest of Africa via Turkey. Inspired by the lives and achievements of the Ertegün brothers and Arif Mardin, jazz music has flourished in Istanbul. This has paved the way for the Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized every year since 1994 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. Hence the special place of Istanbul on the global jazz map for the last twenty years. It is our pleasure to host the "International Jazz Day" which will raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people. -

He’s an alumnus who’s accomplished of our dedicated and committed alumni and see their love quite a bit, and he now serves as president of Lindenwood’s of Lindenwood firsthand. Karen and I particularly enjoyed Belleville campus. visiting with the ladies from our 50-year class of 1965! YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -
The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture
New Zealand Journal of History, 40, 2 (2006) The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture THE 1940s ARE INTERESTING YEARS in the story of New Zealand’s consumer culture. The realities of working and spending, and the promulgation of ideals and moralities around consumer behaviour, were closely related to the political process. Labour had come to power in 1935 promising to alleviate the hardship of the depression years and improve the standard of living of all New Zealanders. World War II intervened, replacing the image of increasing prosperity with one of sacrifice. In the shadow of the war the economy grew strongly, but there remained a legacy of shortages at a time when many sought material advancement. Historical writing on consumer culture is burgeoning internationally, and starting to emerge in New Zealand. There is already some local discussion of consumption in the post-war period, particularly with respect to clothing, embodiment and housing.1 This is an important area for study because, as Peter Gibbons points out, the consumption of goods — along with the needs they express and the desires they engender — deeply affects individual lives and social relationships.2 A number of aspects of consumption lend themselves to historical analysis, including the economic, the symbolic, the moral and the political. By exploring the political aspects of consumption and their relationships to these other strands, we can see how intense contestation over the symbolic meaning of consumption and its relationship to production played a pivotal role in defining the differences between the Labour government and the National opposition in the 1940s. -
Melissa Errico
Melissa Errico is one of Broadway's most cherished leading ladies, as well as a blossoming recording artist who has been called "the voice of enchantment" by the NY TIMES. She released her second studio CD Lullabies and Wildflowers on Mothers Day 2008. This follows her debut CD Blue Like That (Capitol Records, EMI) produced by Arif Mardin, praised as "gorgeous" (NY TIMES), and "earthy and soulful" (USA TODAY). Melissa was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Tony Award for her work in Michel Legrand's Amour, and has been recognized with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations and three Drama League Honors. In December of 2010, she received the "Artist of Distinction" Award from the Great Neck Arts Center, recognizing her as a Long Island native who has made her home town proud. Melissa starred on Broadway as Betty Haynes (the Rosemary Clooney role) in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and then starred off-Broadway in the Shaw play CANDIDA, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress 2010 Drama Desk Award. When only a teenager, Melissa burst upon the Broadway scene as Cosette in Les Miserables, quickly followed by a star-turn as Kitty in Anna Karenina, and then, at age 22, to raves as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Since then, she has starred in High Society, Amour and Dracula on Broadway, and acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Major Barbara and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as in television and film, including CBS's Central Park West and the movies Frequency and Life Or Something Like It, opposite Angelina Jolie. -

BIG DADDY'S TWENTY GREATEST ONE HIT WONDERS "Whew! I'm thankful this list and topic are over. While I greatly appreciate the attention and passion you all brought to it, it also came with so much anger from some. I think the SPIRIT of the fun in it all got lost. So here's what happened. ANY final 20 selection that was followed with a hit that crawled into the top 40, even if 90% of music lovers can't recall that second hit today, did not make the cut. EXAMPLE? Billy Paul's ME AND MRS. JONES and THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY LIFE. EXAMPLE? An amazing track like Fountain's of Wayne's STACY'S MOM gets excluded because I own every note that band has ever recorded. So to me, they were so much more than the one hit that charted and there are other examples of this as well. While I don't own EVERY album FREE ever recorded, to me they are so much more than ALL RIGHT NOW. Mountain's MISSISSIPPI QUEEN is another example of this. EXAMPLE? The Contours score big time with DO YOU LOVE ME. Although FIRST I LOOK AT THE PURSE technically didn't chart Top 40 at the time it came out, PURSE is very well known today, so it's difficult to look at them as a one hit wonder. EXAMPLE? I only counted AMERICAN chart success. THE EASYBEATS had many other Australian hits, but FRIDAY ON MY MIND is their only USA chart success. So it made it. -
