Music Therapy Master Song Resource List University of Kansas Music Therapy Song Repertoire Resource List Spring 2021 The KU music therapy song repertoire resource list acts as a reference for music therapy students as they work to develop a diverse repertoire of songs for use in their musical, pre-clinical, and clinical work. As such, it is a both a document of important songs that have historically been used in music therapy processes, and a living, breathing document that will be updated intermittently to maintain the dynamic of new musics. Songs are categorized and divided into music genres. Genres provide some level of diversity. Current genres in the book are provided as a general list on page 2, and then each genre is presented alphabetically, with songs in each genre also presented alphabetically. This approach helps to make finding songs easier. Some songs will be cross-referenced. Each song will include either an original artist or the song’s author (or both), as well as the year the song was written. This list can help students learn more songs, not only for singing and accompaniment purposes, but also for using recordings of songs when appropriate. Students are strongly encouraged to locate and listen to original recordings of songs to help their learning processes. Original notation in lead sheets is also helpful, especially for students that excel in reading. A good ear and solid music reading skills help for music therapists to be efficient in their learning of new songs. Also, looking up the history of a song helps a clinician make important decisions on how the music may connect with a client, increasing the potential for its effective use. 1 Table of Contents Alternative/Indie _________________________ 3 Afro Punk ______________________________ 4 Anthems/Patriotic Songs___________________ 5 Blues__________________________________ 6 Children’s Songs_________________________ 7 Contemporary Praise/Worship Songs_________ 10 Country/Bluegrass/Folk____________________ 11 Disco__________________________________ 14 Early American/Traditional_________________ 15 Folk: General/Traditional___________________ 17 Folk: Indie/Neo Folk_______________________ 18 Funk___________________________________ 19 Global Roots and International_______________ 20 Holiday Music____________________________ 21 Jazz___________________________________ 23 Musicals/Showtunes/Soundtracks____________ 25 New Wave______________________________ 27 Popular Music___________________________ 28 Punk/Hardcore/Post-Punk__________________ 35 Rap/Hip-Hop____________________________ 37 Reggae________________________________ 39 Rock __________________________________ 41 Singer Songwriter________________________ 42 Ska/Rocksteady__________________________ 44 Soul/R&B/Motown________________________ 45 Spiritual Songs/Religious Songs/Hymns _______ 47 2 Alternative/Indie Burning Desire Lana Del Rey 2013 Ophelia Lumineers 2016 Ride Twenty One Pilots 2016 Samson Regina Spektor 2001 Watch Billy Eilish 2017 3 Afro Punk I Against I Bad Brains 1986 Keep on Knocking Death 1976 Ma and Pa Fishbone (cross ref. The historic recordings of the song Desafinado: Bossa Nova development and change in the international scene1 Liliana Harb Bollos Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] Fernando A. de A. Corrêa Faculdade Santa Marcelina, Brasil [email protected] Carlos Henrique Costa Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] 1. Introduction Considered the “turning point” (Medaglia, 1960, p. 79) in modern popular Brazi- lian music due to the representativeness and importance it reached in the Brazi- lian music scene in the subsequent years, João Gilberto’s LP, Chega de saudade (1959, Odeon, 3073), was released in 1959 and after only a short time received critical and public acclaim. The musicologist Brasil Rocha Brito published an im- portant study on Bossa Nova in 1960 affirming that “never before had a happe- ning in the scope of our popular music scene brought about such an incitement of controversy and polemic” (Brito, 1993, p. 17). Before the Chega de Saudade recording, however, in February of 1958, João Gilberto participated on the LP Can- ção do Amor Demais (Festa, FT 1801), featuring the singer Elizete Cardoso. The recording was considered a sort of presentation recording for Bossa Nova (Bollos, 2010), featuring pieces by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim, including arrangements by Jobim. On the recording, João Gilberto interpreted two tracks on guitar: “Chega de Saudade” (Jobim/Moraes) and “Outra vez” (Jobim). The groove that would symbolize Bossa Nova was recorded for the first time on this LP with ¹ The first version of this article was published in the Anais do V Simpósio Internacional de Musicologia (Bollos, 2015), in which two versions of “Desafinado” were discussed.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Wickenden Wonderland, Dec 21, Rings in Holiday Spirit,H.R. From
Wickenden Wonderland, Dec 21, Rings In Holiday Spirit Caroling is part of the Christmas tradition. Ordinary folks gracing their neighborhood with their own style of holiday cheer is commonplace in many cities. Fox Point on the PVD East Side, one of the city’s neighborhoods with an artistic temperament, is putting their own spin on it. Wickenden Wonderland – Thursday, Dec 21, 6-8pm – is a celebration put together by the Fox Point Neighborhood Association, and it is for a great cause. Raising money for the homeless with Amos House, this wonderland provides a glimpse of beauty in the human spirit. It also looks like a damned good time. The start is the Point Tavern 6-7pm with drinks and plans for merrymaking. The kitchen will be occupied by Great Northern Barbeque, so it’s an opportunity to enjoy delicious food among friends. There will be drink specials at the Point, and their beverages are a great way to lubricate your singing voice – and no one should be caroling on an empty stomach. Revenue from food and drink sales will go toward Amos House. This all makes for a stellar reason to join in on the fun. At 7pm, the party moves to George M. Cohan Plaza (the intersection of Wickenden and Governor Streets) for what the event Facebook page describes as “great musical accompaniment of the Mighty Good Boys. There will be hot chocolate and cookies for everyone!” If you find yourself on PVD’s East Side or you’re in the city looking for something to do on a Thursday night, then celebrate the holiday season with a caroling crowd.
