The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship. In sailing ships, the toilet was placed in the bow somewhat above the water line with vents or slots cut near the floor level allowing Captain of the Toilet wave action to wash out the facility. Only the captain had a private toilet near his quarters, at the stern of the ship in the quarter gallery. The plans of 18th-century naval ships do not reveal the construction of toilet facilities when the ships were first built. The Journal of Aaron Thomas aboard HMS Lapwing in the Caribbean in the s [now in the possession of the University of Miami and available online] records that a canvas tube was attached, presumably by the ship's sailmaker, to a superstructure [probably built by the ship's carpenter] beside the bowsprit near the figurehead, ending just above the normal waterline. In many modern boats, the heads look similar to seated flush toilets but use a system of valves and pumps that brings sea water into the toilet and pumps the waste out through the hull in place of the more normal cistern and plumbing trap to a drain. In small boats the pump is often hand operated. The pump on a marine toilet operates in a "wet" mode and a "dry" mode. Submarine heads face the problem that at greater depths higher water pressure makes it harder to pump the waste out through the hull. Here, Jacob walks, and Little Sister rides in a stroller—for a little while anyway. Adorable, grinning Little Sister wears a yellow dress with pink flowers and a matching hat, which she is desperate to jettison. In fact, Hermione was a new-generation frigate The book includes all timbering plans built before the revolution. Started on the ways in December Jean-Claude Lemineur 1778, she benefi ted from important advances that were Patrick Villiers brought about by a new concept developed during the second half of the 18th century that translated into seagoing capabilities well beyond those of vessels built according to older designs. Like the other frigates of her generation she allied speed and fi repower, allowing her to rival those of the Royal Navy. But what did Hermione look like? Surprisingly, nothing specifi c remains concerning her, except for the information that she was constructed on the same plans as Concorde, built in 1777. As it turns out, Concorde’s lines were taken off by the Royal Navy after her capture in 1783, and the plans were kept at the NMM in Greenwich. It is fair to believe that Hermione is similar. However, the plans reveal some peculiarities specifi c to Concorde, which is and not present on Hermione. Her battery is pierced for 14 gunports to each side, not counting the chase ports.
