Attracting around 2 million The newly refurbished Cha Cafe visitors a year, Cassiobury Park’s historic importance was recognised in 1999 when it entered at Grade II in the English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Historical Interest. Lecture on Fabergé – by Tim Adams Docent Guild General Meeting, May 23, 2012 (Notes taken by Carol Hallenbeck) When we think of Fabergé, we think of the Imperial Easter eggs – of the delightfully jeweled, enameled works and of gold work techniques. In a San “Diego exhibition there were 27 Easter eggs – They had eggs from every known collection. But Fabergé was so much more. He was a designer and a goldsmith. He owned a business. He had engineers, enamellers, gem setters, goldsmiths as employees – 2700 at one time. He was the visionary. He supervised everything Nothing left his workshop without his approval. He had shops in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Odessa, Kiev, London. They were Edwardian jewelry stores. The store in St. Petersburg had the shop on the first floor, workshops and design center on the second and third floor. He and his family lived on the top, or fourth, floor. He told the story of Maria Pavlovna and her Fabergé collection, part of which was purchased by the McFerrins and is on display in our exhibit. The Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna was a good customer of Fabergé. On December 30, 2009, Sotheby’s in London auctioned some of her important pieces. They came from a newly discovered cache of Fabergé objects that she owned. She was the wife of Grand Duke Vladimir, the brother of Tsar Alexander III. The McFerrins purchased some of the most impressive pieces. They represent the highest quality of craftsmanship from the House of Fabergé. Pavlovna’s story represents intrigue and danger during the darkest hour of Russian history.

  • Character of Area Study
Watford Character of Area Study Adopted December 2011 0B1.0 Introduction The Borough of Watford is a well established urban centre in West Hertfordshire that contains a diverse patchwork of areas reflecting different types of built form. These character areas provide the spatial framework for local neighbourhoods and reflect the multifunctional nature of the town as a location for employment, leisure, study and residential provision. Although these areas provide a network of urban form, rich in “place identity”, they remain at risk of degradation from the pressures of new development. There is therefore a need to identify the Borough’s existing character areas and to provide a reference for guiding contextually responsive development that reinforces local character. 2.0 Urban Conservation Strategy 2.1 The need for a comprehensive study identifying character areas within the Borough was set out in the Council’s Urban Conservation Strategy, as detailed in the Watford District Plan 2000 (adopted 2003). The Urban Conservation Strategy sets out to deliver a package of different documents covering the various heritage assets within the town, including: conservation areas, Statutory Listed Buildings, Locally Listed Buildings and archaeology. The Character of the Area Study provides an overarching resource on urban form for the whole Borough and not just areas or buildings that are designated as heritage assets and referred to in the District Plan and the Urban Conservation Strategy. 2.2 The Watford District Plan 2000 and the related Supplementary Planning Guidance Note 28 (adopted 2003) includes information on Historic Environment Character Zones in Watford. This map based resource provides general information on the historical character zones that exist within the Borough and their archaeological potential.

HERMIONE n March 10, 1780, The Marquis de Lafayette boarded OHermione on his way to the coasts of North America. Frigate of the American War He left to announce the arrival of royal troops to fi ght of Independence the English occupier on the side of the insurgents. The 1779 - 1793 crossing was accomplished in the record time of 48 days. A 1/48 SCALE MONOGRAPH This performance was due to Hermione’s excellent nautical qualities. In fact, Hermione was a new-generation frigate The book includes all timbering plans built before the revolution. Started on the ways in December Jean-Claude Lemineur 1778, she benefi ted from important advances that were Patrick Villiers brought about by a new concept developed during the second half of the 18th century that translated into seagoing capabilities well beyond those of vessels built according to older designs. Like the other frigates of her generation she allied speed and fi repower, allowing her to rival those of the Royal Navy. But what did Hermione look like? Surprisingly, nothing specifi c remains concerning her, except for the information that she was constructed on the same plans as Concorde, built in 1777. As it turns out, Concorde’s lines were taken off by the Royal Navy after her capture in 1783, and the plans were kept at the NMM in Greenwich. It is fair to believe that Hermione is similar. However, the plans reveal some peculiarities specifi c to Concorde, which is and not present on Hermione. Her battery is pierced for 14 gunports to each side, not counting the chase ports.
