(SEARCH) team of archaeologists composed of Joseph Grinnan, MA, Kyle Lent, MA, Deborah Marx, MA, Alexander DeCaro, MA, and Raymond Tubby, MA, and directed by James P. Delgado, PhD, examined and documented 1Ba704, a submerged cultural resource in a section of the Mobile River, in Baldwin County, Alabama. The team conducted current investigation at the request of and under the supervision of Alabama Historical Commission (AHC); Alabama State Archaeologist, Stacye Hathorn of AHC monitored the project. This work builds upon two earlier field projects. The first, in March 2018, assessed the Twelvemile Wreck Site (1Ba694), and the second, in July 2018, was a comprehensive remote-sensing survey and subsequent diver investigations of the east channel of a portion the Mobile River (Delgado et al. -

SAILINGGREAT BRITAIN SQUAREAUTHOR: NEVILLE WADE CONTACT: [email protected] RIGGER MODELS NEVILLE EXPLAINS THE ART OF SAILING A MODEL SQUARE RIGGER HOW DO YOU GET IT TO SAIL INTO THE WIND? Lots of passers-by comment when they see model boats sailing on a pond, and one of the questions often asked of me is the one above. Sometimes I can answer at length, sometimes not, but, at any time, it’s like trying to describe a spiral staircase, without using your hands! If I try to describe the theory while someone is ‘having a go’ with one of my boats, it’s even more difficult! So, I’m going to try here, to describe what happens, what you have to think about to do it, and, also, how much fun it is. I’ve used pictures of my boats, with text on them, to help illustrate what’s happening, along with descriptions in the text of the article, to back that up. I emphasise that the techniques used are suitable for models. They are based on the real thing, but the antics that you can use on a model would dismast a real sailing ship! HERMIONE n March 10, 1780, The Marquis de Lafayette boarded OHermione on his way to the coasts of North America. Frigate of the American War He left to announce the arrival of royal troops to fi ght of Independence the English occupier on the side of the insurgents. The 1779 - 1793 crossing was accomplished in the record time of 48 days. A 1/48 SCALE MONOGRAPH This performance was due to Hermione’s excellent nautical qualities. In fact, Hermione was a new-generation frigate The book includes all timbering plans built before the revolution. Started on the ways in December Jean-Claude Lemineur 1778, she benefi ted from important advances that were Patrick Villiers brought about by a new concept developed during the second half of the 18th century that translated into seagoing capabilities well beyond those of vessels built according to older designs. Like the other frigates of her generation she allied speed and fi repower, allowing her to rival those of the Royal Navy. But what did Hermione look like? Surprisingly, nothing specifi c remains concerning her, except for the information that she was constructed on the same plans as Concorde, built in 1777. As it turns out, Concorde’s lines were taken off by the Royal Navy after her capture in 1783, and the plans were kept at the NMM in Greenwich. It is fair to believe that Hermione is similar. However, the plans reveal some peculiarities specifi c to Concorde, which is and not present on Hermione. Her battery is pierced for 14 gunports to each side, not counting the chase ports. -

Wayne Smith A mixture of shipbuilding, architecture, and art went into producing the wooden decorative work aboard ships of all nations from around the late 1500s until the advent of steam and the steel ship in the late 19th century. The leading humanists and artists in each country were called upon to draw up the iconographic plan for a ship’s ornamentation and to ensure that the work was done according to the ruler’s instructions. By looking through previous research, admiralty records, archaeological examples, and contemporary ship models, the progression of this maritime art form can be followed. -

Chafing Gear – pads, mats, ropes and other materials tied around pieces of rigging to protect them from rubbing on spars and other parts of the rig Foxes – pieces of scrap line made by twisting together several strands or yarns Hand, Reef & Steer – traditional qualifications of an able seaman, to hand is to take in or furl a sail and to reef is to shorten sail and to steer is to take a turn at the helm Helmsman – the Sailor stationed at the ship’s helm (wheel) in charge of steering and keeping a straight course Marline – light, two-stranded line; often tarred and used for seizings Marlinespike – a tapered metal spike used to separate strands of rope, untie knots and as a handle for hauling away on seizings, whippings, etc. Merchant Service – the industry concerned with commercial shipping ventures (i.e., non-military) Rating – denotes a Sailor’s rank, responsibilities and rate of pay (i.e., able seaman, ordinary seaman, boy, etc.) Rigging – the lines and ropes that hold the masts, spars and sails Sail Making – the work of mending, replacing and sewing sails; the sail maker would often advise on how best to set and trim sails Seizing – method of binding two ropes or objects together involving wrapping them tightly with line Splice – weaving together to strands of separate ropes to form one longer rope Watches – division of labor aboard ship; the
