Its demolition served as a rallying cry for early preservationists and students of historic preservation study its importance. Having been both a Massachusetts schoolchild and student of historic preservation, this project has inspired and challenged me for the past nine months. To begin, I must thank those who came before me who studied the objects and legacy of the Hancock house. VERNACULAR IN CURVES: THE MYTHOLOGIZING OF THE GREAT LAKES WHALEBACK by Joseph Thaddeus Lengieza April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Bradley Rodgers Major Department: Maritime Studies, History The “whaleback” type of bulk commodity freighter, indigenous to the Great Lakes of North America at the end of the nineteenth century, has engendered much notice for its novel appearance; however, this appearance masks the essential vernacularity of the vessel. Comparative disposition analysis reveals that whalebacks experienced longevity comparable to contemporary Great Lakes freighter of similar construction material and size, implying that popular narrative overstates whaleback abnormality. Market and social forces which contributed to the rise and fall of the whaleback type are explored. Diamonds in the Sand
I was hooked. A real treasure hunt. Following his directions, I made my way to the gift shops at Sunset Beach to learn more about the Cape May diamonds. There, I found faceted and mounted gems and books, including The Legend of the Cape May Diamond, by award- winning writer Trinka Hakes Noble. Just like real diamonds To the naked eye viewing a polished and faceted Cape May diamond, there is no distinguishable difference between it and a real diamond. Until modern gem scanning equipment was developed, they were passed along by unscrupulous vendors as genuine diamonds. As closely as I examined the stones, I could not tell the difference either. They sparkle as brilliantly as any engagement ring, but sadly, unlike true diamonds, have no substantial value. According to legend and local history, Cape May diamonds are pure quartz crystal, and look like clear pebbles along the beach. When wet, they are translucent in hues of white, beige and rose, polished smooth by the ocean waves and sand. Often mistaken for river-smoothed glass from New Jersey’s once-thriving glass manufacturing industry, BY LINDA BARRETT geologists claim the crystals are local in origin, washing out of nearby Pleistocene gravel deposits. They register an eight on the hardness scale. Claims are their source is over 200 miles away, in the upper reaches of the Delaware River. “The Cape May diamonds are the daughters of the river, linking the state’s past and present. These Diamonds in the Sand fragments of quartz rock have hidden in the river, plucked away from the Cape May Diamonds Dazzle Visitors mountains lining its banks,” says author Noble. -

Performance Evaluation of the 19th Century Clipper Ship Cutty Sark: A Comparative Study C. Tonry1, M. Patel1, C. Bailey1, W. Davies2, J. Harrap2, E. Kentley2, P. Mason2 1University of Greenwich, London, UK 2 Abstract The Cutty Sark, built in 1869 in Dumbarton, is the last intact composite tea clipper ship [1]. One of the last tea clippers built she took part in the tea races back from China. These races caught the public imagination of the day and were widely reported in newspapers [2]. They developed from a desire for 'fresh' tea and the first ship to return with the new season's tea could charge a higher price for the cargo. Clipper ships were built for speed rather than carrying capacity. The hull efficiency of the Cutty Sark and her contemporaries is currently unknown. However, with modern CFD techniques, virtual experiments can be performed to model the fluid flow past the hull and so based on the shear stress and the pressure over the surface of the hull to calculate the resistance. In order to compare the hull against other ships three other ships were selected. The Farquharson, an East Indiaman built in 1820 [3]; the Thermopylae, another composite clipper built in 1868 which famously raced the Cutty Sark in 1872 [1]; and finally the Erasmo a later Italian all-steel construction 4-masted barque built in 1903[4]. Fig. 1 shows images of these ships. As only one of these ships exists today, and she no longer sails, 3D geometries were constructed fromlines plans of the ships hulls. -

BRIGHAM The following bibliography attempts, first, to present a historical sketch of every newspaper printed in the United States from 1690 to 1820; secondly, to locate all files found in the various libraries of the country; and thirdly, to give a complete check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society. The historical sketch of each paper gives the title, the date of establishment, the name of the editor or publisher, the fre- quency of issue and the date of discontinuance. It also attempts to give the exact date of issue when a change in title or name of publisher or frequency of publication occurs. In locating the files to be found in various libraries, no at- tempt is made to list every issue. In the case of common news- papers which are to be found in many libraries, only the longer files are noted, with a description of their completeness. Rare newspapers, which are known by only a few scattered issues, are minutely listed. The check list of the issues in the library of the American Antiquarian Society follows the style of the Library of Con- gress "Check List of Eighteenth Century Newspapers," and records all supplements, missing issues and mutilations. The arrangement is alphabetical by states and towns. Towns are placed according to their present State location. For convenience of alphabetization, the initial "The" in the titles of papers is disregarded. Papers are considered to be of folio size, unless otherwise stated. -

THE WAR OF 1812 MAGAZINE ISSUE 26 December 2016 Appendix I War of 1812 Chronology Compiled by Ralph Eshelman and Donald Hickey Introduction This War of 1812 Chronology includes all the major events related to the conflict beginning with the 1797 Jay Treaty of amity, commerce, and navigation between the United Kingdom and the United States of America and ending with the United States, Weas and Kickapoos signing of a peace treaty at Fort Harrison, Indiana, June 4, 1816. While the chronology includes items such as treaties, embargos and political events, the focus is on military engagements, both land and sea. It is believed this chronology is the most holistic inventory of War of 1812 military engagements ever assembled into a chronological listing. Don Hickey, in his War of 1812 Chronology, comments that chronologies are marred by errors partly because they draw on faulty sources and because secondary and even primary sources are not always dependable.1 For example, opposing commanders might give different dates for a military action, and occasionally the same commander might even present conflicting data. Jerry Roberts in his book on the British raid on Essex, Connecticut, points out that in a copy of Captain Coot’s report in the Admiralty and Secretariat Papers the date given for the raid is off by one day.2 Similarly, during the bombardment of Fort McHenry a British bomb vessel's log entry date is off by one day.3 Hickey points out that reports compiled by officers at sea or in remote parts of the theaters of war seem to be especially prone to ambiguity and error. -

Abstract This thesis sought to investigate why the British retained their policy of neutrality throughout the American Civil War, 1861-65, and whether the lack of intervention suggested British apathy towards the conflict. It discovered that British intervention was possible in a number of instances, such as the Trent Affair of 1861, but deliberately obstructed Federal diplomacy, such as the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This thesis suggests that the British public lacked substantial and sustained support for intervention. Some studies have suggested that the Union Blockade of Southern ports may have tempted British intervention. This thesis demonstrates how the British sought and implemented replacement cotton to support the British textile industry. This study also demonstrates that, by the outbreak of the Civil War, British society lacked substantial support for foreign abolitionists’’ campaigns, thus making American slavery a poorly supported reason for intervention. -

China Mail by American Clipper Ships by Richard C. Frajola This article will examine mail carried by two America clipper ships that operated between China and the United States in the period between 1846 and 1857. All such mail was carried privately and letters arriving in the United States were subject to ship letter postage due. In the 1840s a faster sailing vessel, the clipper ship, began to be built in the United States and to a lesser extent in Great Britain. The term had previously been used to define any fast sailing vessel but soon became virtually synonymous with the unique brand of American clipper that was designed specifically for high speed sailing. Built to carry small, valuable cargo, speed became more important than cargo capacity and the size of the hold was reduced, the bow sharpened, and the total area of sail increased. The fastest of these ships could travel more than 350 miles a day in good winds. The era of dominance of the American clipper ships in the China trade lasted from about 1845 to 1859 when several of the fastest, the so-called extreme clippers, were made in American shipyards. Figure 1. This April 16, 1834 ship letter was sent from Canton, China, via Philadelphia, to New York City. The only reported "full rigged ship" handstamp applied to a letter from China. Before the era of clipper ships, letters sent by ship from China to the United States often took five to six months to arrive. As a point of reference, Figure 1 shows one of the most spectacular examples of ship mail in this precursor period.
