Its demolition served as a rallying cry for early preservationists and students of historic preservation study its importance. Having been both a Massachusetts schoolchild and student of historic preservation, this project has inspired and challenged me for the past nine months. To begin, I must thank those who came before me who studied the objects and legacy of the Hancock house. I am greatly indebted to the research efforts of Henry Ayling Phillips (1852- 1926) and Harriette Merrifield Forbes (1856-1951). I wrote this essay in the spring of 1992 as my undergraduate honors thesis. I hope that the intervening ten years and my graduate education have helped me produce more sophisticated, better written works of history. But since I posted this thesis on-line several years ago, several websites have linked to the essay as a useful resource on the strike, labor history, and Calvin Coolidge. ENTHUSIASM. Can you get excited about your work? Or is it an endurance contest? If you find it dull and depressing, you can be sure it is the same for the children. How you feel about your work is as important as how much you know about it. And how you feel about it is sure to be re- flected in the children. You have a job that is worth getting enthusiastic about. Enjoy the fine experiences it brings you, and learn to forget the little irritations. What happens in rehearsal may influence a whole life. 2. CAN YOU OVERLOOK? Benjamin Franklin once said, "There is a time to wink, and a time to see." Learn to distinguish be- tween natural ordinary wiggling, and intentional disturbance. 3.INTERESTING. Discipline, anyhow, is a sign of failure. If you could make the work interesting enough, there would be little trouble. More work and less worry: Learning music can be either exciting or dull. What it is to you, it will surely be to the children, too. 4.HUMOR. If you can't see a joke, work on yourself until you can. If something funny happens in rehearsal, enjoy the situation and let everybody else enjoy it, too. It's much better for everybody to laugh together, than for some to be laughing at others. -

While American independence from Britain ultimately depended upon the spilling of blood on the battlefields of Bunker Hill, Saratoga and Yorktown, the successful challenge to the legitimacy of British rule in America was the culmination of an earlier communications war waged by American Whigs between the Stamp Act agitation of 1764-5 and the Coercive Acts of 1774. In response to the first of the Coercive acts--the Boston Port Bill--Boston Whigs secured a tidal wave of political and material support from throughout the colonies of British America. By the end of 1774, the American Secretary at Whitehall, Lord Dartmouth, was receiving reports from colonial Governors of North America, like the passage quoted above from the Lieutenant-Governor of South Caroline, William Bull. -

MARY KELLOGG: AESTHETIC DANCE VISIONARY By Ellen Knight1 When Winchester’s Mary Kellogg danced, all the Boston papers agreed, she was a vision of exquisite elegance and grace. When Kellogg designed a dance production, her audiences were transported to lands of poetry, myth, and legend. Virtually forgotten today, Kellogg held a remarkable place in American dance history. She not only enlisted Boston and New York society leaders–and those in Winchester as well–as patrons for her dances but also got the younger generations onto the stage, popularizing aesthetic dance as perhaps none of her predecessors had. Kellogg was not the first exponent of modern dance. Before her were Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Genevieve Stebbins (with whom she was reportedly most often compared) who espoused fluid, free-form, natural movements and the wearing of flowing Grecian and exotic dance costumes, but they were rarely seen in Boston. Staging her productions locally and working with local talent, Kellogg was unusually admired in Boston. She made headlines for her dances,2 using her art not only to charm audiences but also to support humanitarian causes. And it all began in Winchester, giving the town its own place in American dance history. THE MUSICIAN Mary Kellogg (1881-1952) about 1911 Kellogg was three years old when her family moved to Winchester, taking up residence at 86 Church St. Her banker-broker father, George G. Kellogg, was among the originators of the Winchester Golf Club and the Country Club, and it was as a golfer that Kellogg’s name first appeared in the local newspaper.3 But that soon changed. -

THOMAS Dissertation Director: Deborah Gray White This dissertation expands our knowledge of four significant dimensions of black women’s experiences in eighteenth century New England: work, relationships, literacy and religion. This study contributes, then, to a deeper understanding of the kinds of work black women performed as well as their value, contributions, and skill as servile laborers; how black women created and maintained human ties within the context of multifaceted oppression, whether they married and had children, or not; how black women acquired the tools of literacy, which provided a basis for engagement with an interracial, international public sphere; and how black women’s access to and appropriation of Christianity bolstered their efforts to resist slavery’s dehumanizing effects. While enslaved females endured a common experience of race oppression with black men, gender oppression with white women, and class oppression with other compulsory workers, black women’s experiences were distinguished by the impact of the triple burden of gender, race, and class. This dissertation, while centered on the experience of black women, considers how their experience converges with and diverges from that of white women, black men, and other servile laborers. -

THE TEXTUALITY OF THE CONSTITUTION AND THE ORIGINS OF ORIGINAL INTENT Simon Joseph Gilhooley, Ph. D. Cornell University 2014 In this dissertation, I engage issues associated with the particular nature of the American Constitution, seeking why and how Americans have come so strongly to identify with the Constitution as a text, and with the framers of that document as authors of that text. This identification remains a central part of American political culture, placing limits upon what is ideologically permissible within the polity. Examining newspapers accounts, I trace the historical origins of the close association of the American Constitution with its “framers” – an idea that has currency through popular constitutional interpretation via “framer intent.” I locate the genesis of this idea within three ideational environments within the early American Republic. These are (1) the emergence of the Author figure as a method of ordering texts, (2) the veneration of the founders and their association with the Constitution, and (3) the divergence of legal and non-elite constitutional interpretations. Each of these developmental strands contributed in forming a constellation within which claims of framer intent could come to carry weight. The final component of the dissertation explores the culmination of these processes within the debates over abolition with the District of Columbia in the 1830s, and the resultant turn to constitutional understandings predicated upon beliefs as to the framers’ intentions rather than the text of the Constitution.
