The News Photographer G 2009 1 Letter from the BPPA President May 30, 2009

My congratulations to the BPPA contest winners. In a region of the country that has produced some of world’s best photojournalists, this year’s award recipients continue to demonstrate the excellence and quality in their prize winning photographs. On behalf of the BPPA I would like to express our gratitude to our sponsors and advertisers. Throughout this book you will see their names. These organizations and companies sustain BPPA, please support them. I want to convey my gratitude to the officers and board of directors for all their hard work. OurC hairman of the Board, Bob Howard does the work of at least 10 people. Countless hours have been put in by Michael Maloney, Marlene Karas, Jim Mahoney, Neal Hamberg, Mark Garfinkel and Charlie Krupa, along with Stephan Savoia, Mo Tate and Richard Chase. Without the hard work of these people BPPA would cease to exist. In a time of rapid change in our industry, with everyone having to work much harder, the time these people donate to BPPA is even more impressive. This year’s judges were Andrea Mohin of , Lucien Perkins of the Washington Post and Sir Colin Finlay, who spent hours on each category. We express our gratitude to them for taking the time to come to Boston and judge. My thanks to Marlene Karas and Michael Maloney for all the hours and days spent on chairing this year’s contest. BPPA has had several positive things take place in the past year. Last year’s winning photographs are hanging in a show at Logan Airport. Some of the winning images from this year will replace the photographs presently on display at Logan. We are also working on a permanent exhibit at Logan Airport titled “Welcome to New England.” This year for the first this entire book will be posted on the website. My thanks to Jeff Mayes for creating our new web site and keeping it up to date. Neal Hamberg has created a new e-BPPA News Jim Mahoney organized and hosted our first multimedia workshop which was a great success. Thanks to the Museum of Fine Art for hosting one our meetings and inviting us to be their guests for the Josef Karsh exhibit. Bob Howard, Neal Hamberg and myself have had meetings with The State Police, the Transit Police and I have met with Commissioner Ed Davis of the Boston Police. I am pleased to say we have a good working relationship with each department. My congratulations to Commissioner Davis on receiving the Bob Howard Good Fellowship award, Jeff Twiss of the Boston Celtics, our Sports Personality of the Year and Joe Wrinn of Harvard News Office, our “Appreciation Award” winner. These people are a great help to us in doing our jobs. We know we can reach out to them when we need to. As things continue to change rapidly in our world and our profession there will always be a need for great still photographs. Where and how we publish our work may change, but nothing else has the impact of a brilliant still photograph. No one can take away our creativity and desire to tell the story one frame at a time. My wishes for you in the upcoming year are of one of prosperity and creativity and in this time of change and remember YES WE CAN!!!!

2009 Edward Davis Police Commissioner

Police Commissioner Edward Davis took the reins of the Boston Police Department in late 2006, when the city was still grappling with a decade high murder rate. In the three years since Davis took command, homicides have gone down every year. No less important, through his community policing efforts, car thefts, breaking and enterings robberies, and larcenies have also dipped significantly. A veteran police officer, Davis worked his way through the ranks in the Lowell Police Department, where he was a patrolmen, a narcotics detective, and finally, Chief of Police, when Mayor named him Commissioner of the Boston Police Department. Commissioner Davis understands our job and is a pleasure to work with.

2009 Jeff Twiss Boston Celtics

Jeff Twiss as vice president of media relations is unquestionably loyal to his employer, the Celtics. and still manages to convey the impression that he works for the media members who come to him with problems both great and small. That’s because he truly cares about others and the jobs they have to do. He respects photographers and writers and broadcasters and he believes that they and those with the team can all do their jobs with class and dignity. We believe this makes him the perfect recipient for this honor.

Dominic Chavez, Freelance WHO Project Throughout the world there are very few counties making leading efforts to help patients fight and properly treat MDR-TB (multiple drug resistance TB) and XDR-TB (extensively drug resistant TB). The challenges in many countries are dealing with lack of infrastructure, poverty and lack of funding. In 2005, 112,000 people died from MDR-TB and over 420,000 people were infected worldwide. The number of people who died from regular TB in 2006 was 1.7 million. The funding gap to treat TB patients was $1 billion dollars. Over 40 countries have XDR-TB within their borders. These highly contagious germs can be spread from person to person and can be transmitted like any common cold. This essay is a window into the global challenges through the eyes of patients in the countries of Lesotho and the Philippines and how they are facing these health issues.

2009 Joe Wrinn Harvard News Office

Some of us have known Joe Wrinn as a diligent UPI stringer. Some of us have know him as that always moving Harvard photographer. Some of us have known Joe as the spokesman for “the university.” ©Vin Catania Some of us just know him as that guy who gets us into the Hasty Pudding Awards. Through all these phases, he has just been Joe. Always gracious, always ready to help out a fellow photographer. And we appreciate that. ©Rick Friedman (left) Joe Wrinn in the early 90s, (right) present-day Joe
