Four years after their recording of Brahms’s Double Concerto (see volume 22), Itzhak Perlman and the great Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink, at the helm of “his” Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, made their second and last album together. They chose the highly conventional pairing of the Mendelssohn and Bruch concertos, in a programme identical to that which Perlman had recorded eleven years earlier with André Previn (volume 5). Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, which is in fact his second work in the genre, is one of the jewels in the crown of the violin repertoire. Classical and elegant, the image of its creator, it remains one of the most sophisticated works ever written for the violin. It is dedicated to Mendelssohn’s friend Ferdinand David (1810–1873), who helped write the solo part and gave the premiere of the concerto at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 13 March 1845, probably on the same 1742 Guarneri del Gesù violin that later become Jascha Heifetz’s favourite instrument. As a very long list of recordings makes clear, this work has never waned in popularity with either performers or audiences. Max Bruch was inspired by Mendelssohn, but also by Brahms, when it came to writing his violin concertos. He wrote three such works, and the Scottish Fantasy , for the same forces, but the First Concerto in G minor, Op.26 — written in consultation with its dedicatee, Joseph Joachim — has always far surpassed its fellows in popularity. Premiered by Joachim in Bremen in 1868, its success lies in both its virtuosic writing and its melodic riches. Fritz Kreisler made the first disc of the concerto, in 1925, since when all the world’s greatest violinists have recorded it at least once — today there are more than eighty official versions available on the market. While Perlman has never recorded Mendelssohn’s First Violin Concerto, he has rounded off his forays into the great Romantic repertoire with not one but two recordings of another pair of works by Bruch (both particularly dear to Heifetz’s heart): the Second Violin Concerto, Op.44 and the Scottish Fantasy , Op.46 (volumes 14 and 40).

Quatre ans après leur enregistrement du Double Concerto de Brahms (volume 22), Itzhak Perlman et le grand chef hollandais Bernard Haitink, à la tête de « son » Orchestre du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, livraient le second et dernier témoignage de leur rencontre au disque. Couplage on ne peut plus évident, qui reprenait un programme identique à celui que le violoniste, alors dirigé par André Previn, avait proposé onze ans auparavant (volume 5). Le Concerto pour violon en mi mineur de Mendelssohn, second du nom, est un véritable bijou. Classique et élégant à l’image de son auteur, il reste l’un des plus raffinés jamais écrits pour l’instrument. Dédié à son ami Ferdinand David (1810–1873) — qui participa à la rédaction de la partie soliste — ce dernier en assura la création au Gewandhaus de Leipzig le 13 mars 1845, probablement sur un violon de Guarneri del Gesù daté de 1742, qui sera plus tard l’instrument de prédilection de Jascha Heifetz. La considérable discographie de l’œuvre témoigne de l’intérêt ininterrompu que lui portent les violonistes et le public depuis des générations. Max Bruch prit certes modèle sur Mendelssohn mais aussi sur Brahms pour concevoir ses concertos pour violon. On lui en doit trois, auxquels s’ajoute la Fantaisie écossaise , et c’est indiscutablement le Premier Concerto en sol mineur op. 26 — pour lequel il reçut les conseils avisés du dédicataire Joseph Joachim — dont la popularité reste la plus large. Créé à Brême par Joachim en 1868, il doit son succès autant à sa virtuosité qu’à sa richesse mélodique. Depuis l’enregistrement de Fritz Kreisler en 1925, tous les grands archets en ont gravé une ou plusieurs interprétations, sa discographie atteignant à ce jour plus de quatre-vingts versions officielles. Si Perlman n’a jamais enregistré le premier concerto de Mendelssohn, il a en revanche gravé, à deux reprises, d’autres pages concertantes de Max Bruch, particulièrement chères à Heifetz, son Second Concerto op. 44 et sa fameuse Fantaisie écossaise op. 46 (volumes 14 et 40), complétant ainsi son exploration du grand répertoire romantique.

Vier Jahre nach ihrer Aufzeichnung des Brahms’schen Doppelkonzertes (Album 22 in diesem Set) machten Itzhak Perlman und der große niederländische Dirigent Bernard Haitink gemeinsam mit “dessen” Amsterdamer Concertgebouworkest ihre zweite und letzte gemeinsame Plattenaufnahme. Es war eine künstlerische Verbindung, wie sie kaum selbstverständlicher sein konnte, und die Beteiligten widmeten sich einem Programm, das identisch mit dem war, welches der Geiger elf Jahre zuvor unter dem Dirigat André Previns aufgezeichnet hatte (Album 5). Mendelssohns Konzert in e-Moll (sein zweites Violinkonzert) ist ein echtes Meisterwerk. Klassisch und elegant, und damit ganz Mendelssohn, ist es doch eines der raffiniertesten Werke, die je für das Instrument geschrieben wurden. Er widmete es seinem Freund Ferdinand David (1810–1873), der an der Entstehung der Solostimme beteiligt war und die Uraufführung im Leipziger Gewandhaus am 13. März 1845 spielte, vermutlich auf einer Geige von Guarneri del Gesù von 1742 (später das bevorzugte Instrument von Jascha Heifetz). Die beachtliche Diskographie des Werkes zeugt vom ununterbrochenen Interesse, das Geiger und Publikum ihm seit Generationen entgegenbringen. Max Bruch legte Mendelssohns Schaffen sicherlich als Modell für seine Violinkonzerte zugrunde, doch auch Brahms war ihm eine Inspirationsquelle. Bruch schrieb drei Konzerte und die Schottische Fantasie , und es ist unzweifelhaft das 1. Konzert in g-Moll op. 26 — bei dessen Komposition er auf den besonnenen Rat des Widmungsträgers Joseph Joachim zurückgreifen konnte —, das sich auch heute noch der größten Beliebtheit erfreut. Die Uraufführung fand 1868 in Bremen durch Joachim statt, und das Werk verdankt seinen Erfolg gleichermaßen seiner Virtuosität wie auch seinem Melodienreichtum. Seit der Aufnahme von Fritz Kreisler 1925 haben alle großen Geiger eine oder mehrere Interpretationen des Werkes aufgezeichnet, und es gibt heute mehr als achtzig offizielle Aufnahmen. Zwar machte Perlman niemals eine Aufnahme des 1. Konzertes von Mendelssohn, dafür jedoch zweifach von konzertanten Kompositionen Max Bruchs, die auch Heifetz besonders am Herzen lagen: Bruchs 2. Konzert op. 44, und seine berühmte Schottische Fantasie op. 46 (Alben 14 und 40). Diese Aufnahmen vervollständigen seine Auseinandersetzung mit den bedeutendsten Stücken des romantischen Repertoires.
