Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra 2019/2020 Year in Review The Mission of the Chairman of the Board of Directors Mercedes T. Bass

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is: Dear Patrons and Supporters of the FWSO,

It is my great honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. I send each of you my deepest gratitude for your devoted support and advocacy, especially throughout this global pandemic.

We began the FWSO 2019/2020 season with so many incredible concerts. The musicians, as always, performed exquisitely during their final year with Miguel Harth- Bedoya as our Music Director. In March 2020, our world stopped due to the terrible COVID-19 pandemic. So many have been personally impacted by this virus, and all of us at the FWSO send our heartfelt sympathies and best wishes as we continue to persevere through this challenging time.

At the time of the state and county mandated closures, the FWSO quickly shifted its focus to virtual and online To perform great symphonic music at the highest experiences to continue our great mission for the level of artistic excellence to educate, entertain, community. The orchestra announced The Music Lab to keep the music playing beyond the walls of the concert hall which provided an opportunity for our patrons, and enhance cultural life. donors, education partners, and more to engage with our world-class musicians. We were so pleased to present this sophisticated virtual format and I hope you enjoyed many of the programs by Miguel and our musicians. To present engaging music education programs for young people to foster early interest The FWSO also broadcast a very special July 4th program, America Strong, and even was featured prominently in the League of American Orchestra’s national Symphony magazine as a leader in the nation on reopening in and inspire lifelong enjoyment of music. during a very trying time.

To achieve ever-greater levels of artistic While this is not how we pictured Miguel’s final season as Music Director, we have twenty years of his tenure to celebrate. I would like to thank Miguel from the bottom of my heart for his leadership and musicianship over accomplishment and leadership in Fort Worth two decades. We are not saying goodbye, however. We look forward to Miguel joining us in the future as and across the nation. Music Director Laureate. I wish all of you my best and look forward to the 2020/2021 season when we will hopefully return to a more normal setting.

With warm regards,

Mercedes T. Bass Chairman of the Board of Directors

2019/2020 Year in Review | 1 President and CEO Keith Cerny

Dear FWSO Patrons and Supporters,

Thank you all for your dedication and loyalty to the FWSO throughout what has been an unprecedented year. We began the 2019/2020 season with exciting concerts, guest artists, and performances at new venue locations, as well as a season-long celebration of Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s final year as FWSO Music Director. We are all grateful to Miguel for his musical leadership over the past two decades, and I look forward to working with Miguel as the Music Director Laureate in the future.

Beginning on March 13, FWSO concerts were abruptly halted by the global crisis that impacted us all. In accordance with mandated government regulations, outlined by the City of Fort Worth, Performing Arts Fort Worth canceled performances taking place at Bass Performance Hall through May 17, 2020. The pandemic also forced the cancellation of Concerts in the Garden, which was replaced by a special televised America Strong Concert, recorded at Dickies Arena. While we look forward to a modified live season in the fall, I would like to express my heartfelt thoughts to those of you who have suffered throughout these difficult times.

In this period, we focused on four primary goals:

1. Maintaining the health and safety of our musicians and administrative staff by instituting a variety of safety protocols to enable safe operations. We’re proud to have paid our talented core musicians and staff with no job cuts, furloughs, or pay reductions. 2. Ensuring the financial stability of the FWSO by developing new financial forecasting tools, cutting expenses, and seeking additional funding opportunities. 3. Launching the new FWSO digital Music Lab, generously underwritten by Board Chairman Mercedes T. Bass, to connect digitally to audiences and education partners. 4. Communicating regularly with all our stakeholders throughout this challenging time.

Looking back at the 2019/2020 season, we were incredibly fortunate to receive a $1.589 million Paycheck Protection Program forgivable loan from the SBA, which, when combined with intensive fund-raising, allowed the FWSO to achieve a pre-audit operating deficit of just $12,000.

Thank you for standing with the FWSO during these trying times. Many of you donated to the “Keep The Music Playing” fund and also generously donated the value of your cancelled concert tickets back to the symphony. It is because of you that we were able to end this season on such a strong note.

With all my best,

Keith Cerny, Ph.D. President and CEO

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

The 2019/2020 season saw unprecedented losses in ticket revenue due to COVID-19 related closures. Expanded fundraising and FWSO’s receipt of a forgivable Paycheck Protection loan of $1.589 million, coupled with the application of a board reserve of $336,000, allowed the organization to end the fiscal year with a slight deficit of $12,000*, despite the extraordinary challenges surrounding the pandemic.

During this financial crisis, Government support has been vital to the organization’s financial health and covered 20% of the 2019/2020 season payroll. Concurrently, the FWSO is pleased to have been one of the only American symphonies to have maintained full pay and benefits for all FWSO staff and core musicians.

Revenues Contributions $ 4,884,000 39% Ticket Sales $ 4,192,000 34% Investments $ 1,383,000 11% Other $ 336,000 3% *Paycheck Protection Program $ 1,590,000 13% Total Revenue and Support $ 12,385,000

*FY20 audited financials reflect a deficit of $1.601 million, as reporting guidelines required the FWSO to apply the PPP loan against the FY21 budget. In practicality, however, PPP funds were used for expenses related to the 2019/2020 season.
