World-renowned pianists Steven Osborne and Barry Douglas also perform recitals, with Osborne leading a masterclass with Young Scholars from the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, building on the ongoing relationship between the Foundation and The Leeds. The Festival continues the much-enriched programme of events that surrounded the 2018 Competition, allowing audiences to engage with the piano and The Leeds beyond the triennial Competition. As part of The Leeds’ commitment to developing new and exciting ways of bringing the piano to as wide an audience as possible, the Festival – successfully inaugurated in 2018 – will again comprise many learning and engagement activities, including the return of the ‘Discover the Piano: Piano Fantasia’ on 28 March - The Leeds’ biggest primary school event to date, reaching more than 1,000 schoolchildren. -
West Side Story
To Our Readers ow can something be as fresh, as bril Hliant, as explosively urgent as "West Side Story," and be 50 years old? How can this brand new idea for the American theatre have been around for half a century? Leonard Bernstein used to say that he wished he could write the Great American Opera. He was still designing such a project shortly before his death. But in retrospect, we can say that he fulfilled his wish. "West Side Story" is performed to enthusiastic audiences in opera houses around the world - recently in La Scala and, before this year is out, at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Is there a Broadway revival in the works? The signs are highly auspicious. In this issue, we celebrate "West Side Story": its authors, its original performers, and its continuing vital presence in the world. Chita Rivera regrets that, due to scheduling conflicts, she was unable to contribute to this issue by print time. [ wEst SIDE ·sronv L "West Side Story" continues to break ground to this very day. Earlier this year, the show was performed by inmates at Sing Sing. A few months later, it was presented as part of a conflict resolution initiative for warring street gangs in Seattle. And if there's a heaven, Leonard Bernstein was up there dancing for joy last summer while Gustavo Dudamel led his sensational 200-piece Simon Bolfvar Youth Orchestra in the "Mambo" at the Proms in London. Heinrich Neuhaus and Alternative Narratives of Selfhood in Soviet Russi
‘I wish for my life’s roses to have fewer thorns’: Heinrich Neuhaus and Alternative Narratives of Selfhood in Soviet Russia Abstract Heinrich Neuhaus (1888—1964) was the Soviet era’s most iconic musicians. Settling in Russia reluctantly he was dismayed by the policies of the Soviet State and unable to engage with contemporary narratives of selfhood in the wake of the Revolution. In creating a new aesthetic territory that defined himself as Russian rather than Soviet Neuhaus embodied an ambiguous territory whereby his views both resonated with and challenged aspects of Soviet- era culture. This article traces how Neuhaus adopted the idea of self-reflective or ‘autobiographical’ art through an interdisciplinary melding of ideas from Boris Pasternak, Alexander Blok and Mikhail Vrubel. In exposing the resulting tension between his understanding of Russian and Soviet selfhood, it nuances our understanding of the cultural identities within this era. Finally, discussing this tension in relation to Neuhaus’s contextualisation of the artistic persona of Dmitri Shostakovich, it contributes to a long- needed reappraisal of his relationship with the composer. Prokofiev About the Artist French pianist Philippe Bianconi recently captured the silver medal at the Seventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition held in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 18 through June 2. Born in Nice 25 years ago, Mr. Bianconi has given recitals in Paris, where he currently lives, in Nuremberg, and in Rotterdam. He has per formed as soloist with orchestras in Nice and Monte Carlo The Monte Carlo Orchestra, the Montpellier Orchestra, and the Lille Or chestra, under the direction of Lawrence Foster, Claude Bardon, and Jean Claude Casadesus. As a recording artist, he has per formed Schubert's "Winterreise" with baritone Hermann Prey. A product of the. Nice Conservatory, Philippe Bianconi has studied with Mme Delbert-Fevrier, Gabriel Tacchino, and Gaby Casadesus. In 1977 he won first prize in the International Competition of Young Musicians in Belgrade, was a finalist in the 1979 International Competition of Music in Munich, and in 1981 captured first prize in the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition. -
