The 2012 New York Guitar Festival® John Schaefer, Host David Spelman and A.J
Merkin Concert Hall Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7:30 pm Kaufman Center presents The 2012 New York Guitar Festival® John Schaefer, host David Spelman and A.J. Benson, curators Silent Films/Live Guitars HOWARD FISHMAN Buster Keaton’s The Frozen North (1922, 17 minutes) Intermission CALIFONE Buster Keaton’s Go West (1925, 69 minutes) TIM RUTILI, JIM BECKER, BEN MASSARELLA and JOE ADAMIK About the Artists Howard Fishman began his career on the streets of New Orleans and in the subways of NYC, experiences that still resonate in his “disarmingly un-showbizy” concerts (Backstage). A pioneer of the Brooklyn music scene, Fishman “brings a feeling to a room that is reunion-like. Everyone there is part of a community…it can’t be helped.” (11211 Magazine). A testament to his wide-ranging appeal, Fishman has appeared on bills with such diverse artists as Odetta, Yo-Yo Ma, Maceo Parker, Robyn Hitchcock, Taj Mahal and Allen Holdsworth. He is a frequent NPR guest, making feature-length appearances on Fresh Air, World Cafe, Leonard Lopate and Word of Mouth, and has recently been featured as a headlining performer in the American Songbook at Lincoln Center, The Steppenwolf Theatre and at Duke Performances in North Carolina. Fishman’s travels and omnivorous curiosity inform his constantly-expanding repertoire of special projects, from his original oratorio we are destroyed, about The Donner Party, to his multi-media travelogue No Further Instructions, to his New Orleans- inspired Biting Fish Brass Band. His tenth CD, Moon Country, was released in October. Howard Fishman is a storyteller, a seeker, a cultural anthropologist, and “an important force in creative music” (allmusic.com). -
Love Songs Press Release
1 THE MOST ROMANTIC SONGS RECORDED BY THE ACCLAIMED AARON NEVILLE, INCLUDING TRACKS WITH LINDA RONSTADT AND THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, COLLECTED ON NEW COMPILATION AARON NEVILLE: LOVE SONGS “With an angelic voice capable of reconciling spiritual opposites-–wisdom and innocence, masculinity and femininity, the sacred and the profane--(Aaron) Neville can pretty much find the soul of any song...(using) that famous catch in his throat to convey the exuberance of unbridled passion.” --Rolling Stone (1995) The sweet soulful voice of Aaron Neville--the most familiar figure of New Orleans’ first family of music--has been brought to bear on love songs since the late ‘60s. Now 14 of those love songs from his most successful period, the ‘80s and ‘90s, have been collected on Aaron Neville: Love Songs (A&M/UME), released January 14, 2003. With the album co-compiled by Neville himself, each digitally remastered track was selected for its power of romance rather than its chart position. As a result, Aaron Neville: Love Songs brings most of these songs, spanning the years 1981 to 1997, together for the first time on any compilation. The album is the latest in the artist-driven, genre-crossing yet thematic Love Songs series which has previously included collections from Etta James, Elton John, and Stephanie Mills and is scheduled to release albums from Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, the Moody Blues, Peggy Lee and more. Two recordings heard on Aaron Neville: Love Songs are actually from The Neville Brothers (Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril): their Nawlins renditions of the doo-wop classic “The Ten Commandments Of Love” and ballad standard “Mona Lisa,” both from the siblings’ 1981 Joel Dorn-produced album Fiyo On The Bayou. -
You've Got to Be Jazzistic
Introduction: You've Got to Be Jazzistic hriving on a Riff is a contribution to the growing body of work on jazz, I blues, and their multiple influences in other forms of African American and American culture. The provisional term for this relatively new area of dis• course is jazz studies, although there may be a case for Sun Ra's tongue-in-cheek neologism "jazzisticology," which (considered etymologically) appears to mean the study of the "jazzistic," in other words, that which aspires, or pertains, to being like, about, or in the style of, jazz.1 While jazzisticology seems unlikely to catch on, it does have the advantage of marking a distinction between the study of jazz itself (in a nuts-and-bolts musicological sense) and the study of things that are jazz related. Thriving on a Riff belongs to the latter category and sharpens its focus further to examine two of the many cultural forms affected by African American music: literature and film. While that music has become hugely popular and influential far beyond the communities that produced it, its role within African American culture has been especially profound. Numerous black writers have confirmed this: from James Baldwin's bald assertion, "It is only in his music ... that the Negro in America has been able to tell his story," to Bob Kaufman's more poetic coinage: Dirt of a world covers me My secret heart Beating to unheard jazz.2 This recognition of the music's crucial importance, both to African American culture and beyond, can be traced back to W. -
