  • Encounters with the Neighbour in 1970S' British Multicultural Comedy
Postcolonial Interventions, Vol. IV, Issue 1 Encounters with the Neighbour in 1970s’ British Multicultural Comedy Sarah Ilott “If you don’t shut up, I’ll come and move in next door to you!” Such was the frequent response to audience heckles made by Britain’s first well-known black come- dian, Charlie Williams (Leigh 2006). Williams’s response appropriated racist rhetoric of the time, in which the black neighbour was frequently mobilised as an object of fear, threatening the imagined homogeneity of for- merly white communities. Having frequently been on the receiving end of racist taunts such as “Get back to Af- rica” as a professional footballer for Doncaster Rovers in the 1940s and ’50s, Williams was able to claim some 14 Postcolonial Interventions, Vol. IV, Issue 1 of the power of the Teller of the joke through such put-downs, rather than solely occupying the position of the Butt of racist jokes and slurs. However, the fact was that Williams was forced to rely on self-deprecation and the reiteration of racial stereotype gestures to his need to find favour with the predominantly white audiences of the northern working men’s clubs that he toured and the mainstream audiences of ITV’s prime time hit, The Comedians (ITV, 1971-93), on which he was showcased alongside notable racists such as Bernard Manning. De- spite lamenting the “very stupid and very immature” tone of Williams’s self-mocking jokes, comedian Lenny Henry – who lived with the unfortunate legacy of what was expected of black comedians, particularly in the North – acknowledged that Williams did “what you’ve got to do if it’s a predominantly white audience – you’ve got to put yourself, and other people, down” (qtd.

  • Disabling Comedy: “Only When We Laugh!”
Disabling Comedy: “Only When We Laugh!” Dr. Laurence Clark, North West Disability Arts Forum (Paper presented at the ‘Finding the Spotlight’ Conference, Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, 30th May 2003) Abstract Traditionally comedy involving disabled people has extracted humour from people’s impairments – i.e. a “functional limitation”. Examples range from Shakespeare’s ‘fool’ character and Elizabethan joke books to characters in modern TV sitcoms. Common arguments for the use of such disempowering portrayals are that “nothing is meant by them” and that “people should be able to laugh at themselves”. This paper looks at the effects of such ‘disabling comedy’. These include the damage done to the general public’s perceptions of disabled people, the contribution to the erosion of a disabled people’s ‘identity’ and how accepting disablist comedy as the ‘norm’ has served to exclude disabled writers / comedians / performers from the profession. 1. Introduction Society has been deriving humour from disabled people for centuries. Elizabethan joke books were full of jokes about disabled people with a variety of impairments. During the 17th and 18th centuries, keeping 'idiots' as objects of humour was common among those who had the money to do so, and visits to Bedlam and other 'mental' institutions were a typical form of entertainment (Barnes, 1992, page 14). Bilken and Bogdana (1977) identified “the disabled person as an object of ridicule” as one of the ten media stereotypes of disabled people. Apart from ridicule, disabled people have been largely excluded from the world of comedy in the past. For example, in the eighties American stand-up comedian George Carlin was arrested whilst doing his act for swearing in front of young disabled people.

  • Railway Construction Camp, Ribblehead
Ribblehead Construction Camps. Excavation of Building n6. Summary Report on an Excavation carried out by the Ingleborough Archaeology Group on behalf of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority 1 1. Introduction 1.1 Construction work on the Midland Railway Company’s Settle to Carlisle railway began at Settle Junction in 1869 and was divided into several separate contracts. The length from Settle Junction to Dent Head formed Contract No.1 and work at Ribblehead commenced in 1870 once land purchase formalities had been concluded. Building of the viaduct and Blea Moor tunnel were to take almost six years, and a series of settlement and commercial-industrial camps were put up around Ribblehead. Most of the buildings were of wood, set on stone bases, and only building n6 (the subject of this report) is known to have been mainly built in stone. 2. Research Objectives 2.1 The Project 2.1.1. The Ingleborough Archaeology Group was asked by the YDNPA, in 2007, to undertake the project which took the form of a mitigation programme for building n6 which had been flagged up in a Monuments at Risk Survey (MARS) in 2005 as giving cause for concern. At some point between the initial archaeological survey in 1995, completed by Northern Archaeological Associates (NAA), and the MARS visit, and possibly since that date, substantial disturbance had been caused to the rubble within the building. Persons unknown had randomly redistributed quantities of stonework within the structure leaving two large “quarry” holes. It is possible that this disturbance was the work of metal detectorists chasing positive signals from metalwork beneath the stone rubble spread.

Representing British Working Class at the Turn of the New Millennium: A Study of The Royle Family University of Tampere Department of English Pro Gradu Thesis Autumn 2005 Henna Ala-Kutsi 1 Tampereen yliopisto Englantilainen filologia Kieli- ja käännöstieteiden laitos Henna Ala-Kutsi: ”Representing British Working Class at the Turn of the New Millennium: A Study of The Royle Family” Pro Gradu –tutkielma, 102 sivua. Elokuu 2005 ______________________________________________________________________ Tässä Pro Gradu –tutkielmassani tutkin työväenluokan representaatioita brittiläisessä komediasarjassa The Royle Family (suom. Esimerkkini ovat lähinnä television komediasarjoista, kuuluuhan The Royle Familykin samaan genreen. Työväenluokka on usein esitetty hyvin negatiivisten kuvien kautta: heidät on representoitu mm. lihavina, likaisina, tyylittöminä, räävittöminä, tyhminä, vanhanaikaisina sekä passiivisina. Kolmannessa luvussa tarkastelen tilannekomedioiden historiaa Britanniassa. Keskityn erityisesti komediasarjoihin joissa on työväenluokkaisia hahmoja selvittääkseni kontekstin, johon
