Cllr Alan Revell (Chairman) welcomed members of the public and representatives and formally opened the meeting. Public Forum 1. To receive Apologies for Absence. Apologies were accepted from – Cllr Burslem (away), Cllr Martin Lumb, Jenni Aird, Auriol and Michael Marson 2. Approval of the draft minutes of the Annual Parish Meeting held on 18th April 2018. The Chairman made a note that last year’s minutes had been available recently on the website and village noticeboards to read before approval. The minutes were taken as read and proposed by Cllr Galloway for approval by seconded by Cllr Buttle. A vote was taken where they were agreed, and they were duly signed by the Chairman as a true record of the meeting. 3. Matters Arising from the Annual Parish Meeting held on 18th April 2018. There were none. The Chairman thanked Cllr Roberts for organising tonight’s presentation. Cllr Roberts announced that a film called Town Settlement would be shown. Cllr Roberts who had source the film gave a brief introduction and explanation of the film before it was shown. Cllr Roberts also announced that there is a competition – if anyone can recognise 10 things in the film to let them know after the meeting. INTERVAL (15 Minutes) – Very enjoyable light refreshments were served – thank you to all those who assisted in organising these. -

Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube. -

The media, poverty and public opinion in the UK John H. McKendrick, Stephen Sinclair, September 2008 Anthea Irwin, Hugh O’Donnell, Gill Scott and Louise Dobbie How the media in the UK represents poverty and its effect on wider public understanding. The media fulfi ls an important role in shaping, amplifying and responding to public attitudes toward poverty. This study, part of the ‘Public Interest in Poverty Issues’ research programme, explores the role of national, local and community media in refl ecting and infl uencing public ideas of poverty and welfare. The research aimed to: • compare representations of poverty across different contemporary UK media; • identify the principal factors and considerations infl uencing those involved in producing media coverage of poverty; • understand how UK media representations of poverty relate to the public’s understanding of poverty, and any differences between the responses of different groups; • identify examples of effective practice in communicating poverty issues to the public and derive transferable lessons from these. The researchers analysed coverage of poverty in news reporting; looked at how the same poverty news story was reported across different news outlets; reviewed how poverty was presented across different genres of television programme; interviewed key informants involved in the production, placement and presentation of poverty coverage in the mass media and explored public interpretations and responses to media coverage of poverty through focus groups/ workshops. www.jrf.org.uk Contents -

Postcolonial Interventions, Vol. IV, Issue 1 Encounters with the Neighbour in 1970s’ British Multicultural Comedy Sarah Ilott “If you don’t shut up, I’ll come and move in next door to you!” Such was the frequent response to audience heckles made by Britain’s first well-known black come- dian, Charlie Williams (Leigh 2006). Williams’s response appropriated racist rhetoric of the time, in which the black neighbour was frequently mobilised as an object of fear, threatening the imagined homogeneity of for- merly white communities. Having frequently been on the receiving end of racist taunts such as “Get back to Af- rica” as a professional footballer for Doncaster Rovers in the 1940s and ’50s, Williams was able to claim some 14 Postcolonial Interventions, Vol. IV, Issue 1 of the power of the Teller of the joke through such put-downs, rather than solely occupying the position of the Butt of racist jokes and slurs. However, the fact was that Williams was forced to rely on self-deprecation and the reiteration of racial stereotype gestures to his need to find favour with the predominantly white audiences of the northern working men’s clubs that he toured and the mainstream audiences of ITV’s prime time hit, The Comedians (ITV, 1971-93), on which he was showcased alongside notable racists such as Bernard Manning. De- spite lamenting the “very stupid and very immature” tone of Williams’s self-mocking jokes, comedian Lenny Henry – who lived with the unfortunate legacy of what was expected of black comedians, particularly in the North – acknowledged that Williams did “what you’ve got to do if it’s a predominantly white audience – you’ve got to put yourself, and other people, down” (qtd. -

AS and A LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES Factsheet Industries and audiences factsheet: The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw Industries Production and distribution • The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw is broadcast weekdays from 06.30-10.00 am. • The Breakfast Show has been running since 1967, but Nick Grimshaw took over as the 15th presenter in 2012. • BBC Radio 1 is broadcast on FM, DAB, Freeview, Freesat, Virgin, Sky, or online via BBC Radio Player (including via the phone or tablet app) where it can be heard live or streamed for 30 days. • It is produced by the BBC from its own studios at Broadcasting House in London. • There’s a useful BBC Academy podcast (with transcript) about how the programme is produced http://www.bbc. co.uk/academy/articles/art20170619095219011 • You can also hear what one of the producers (Fiona Hanlon) thinks when she talks about what it’s like to work on the programme: https://www.shu.ac.uk/learn-more/radio-1- breakfast-show • The music is largely playlisted – what is going to be played on daytime Radio 1 is decided by a committee; they choose around 40 records each week for repeated daytime play (A-list records get 25 plays a week, B-list 15, and C-list eight to 10).
