The Media, Poverty and Public Opinion in the UK
The media, poverty and public opinion in the UK John H. McKendrick, Stephen Sinclair, September 2008 Anthea Irwin, Hugh O’Donnell, Gill Scott and Louise Dobbie How the media in the UK represents poverty and its effect on wider public understanding. The media fulfi ls an important role in shaping, amplifying and responding to public attitudes toward poverty. This study, part of the ‘Public Interest in Poverty Issues’ research programme, explores the role of national, local and community media in refl ecting and infl uencing public ideas of poverty and welfare. The research aimed to: • compare representations of poverty across different contemporary UK media; • identify the principal factors and considerations infl uencing those involved in producing media coverage of poverty; • understand how UK media representations of poverty relate to the public’s understanding of poverty, and any differences between the responses of different groups; • identify examples of effective practice in communicating poverty issues to the public and derive transferable lessons from these. The researchers analysed coverage of poverty in news reporting; looked at how the same poverty news story was reported across different news outlets; reviewed how poverty was presented across different genres of television programme; interviewed key informants involved in the production, placement and presentation of poverty coverage in the mass media and explored public interpretations and responses to media coverage of poverty through focus groups/ workshops. www.jrf.org.uk Contents -

Martinez Dy All rights reserved. 2 Abstract Unmasking the Internet: Investigating UK Women’s Digital Entrepreneurship through Intersectionality This thesis investigates the experiences of women digital entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom from an intersectional cyberfeminist perspective. Informed by feminist theories of technology and critical entrepreneurship scholarship, it challenges mainstream discourse on digital entrepreneurship with the argument that, similar to traditional (offline) entrepreneurship, online or digital entrepreneurship is deeply embedded in the social world. It draws upon intersectional feminist theory that conceptualises the social world as composed of intersecting hierarchies of race, class, and gender, in which individuals and groups are positioned in dynamic yet durable ways, and by which they are affected simultaneously. This positionality is understood to be tied to unequal resource distribution, and for this reason, holds important implications when mapped to extant entrepreneurship theory. The thesis also provides interdisciplinary evidence for the continued coding of Internet technology as predominantly white and male, and for the online environment itself as a stratified and unequal space, countering public discourse that portrays it as a neutral and meritocratic ‘great equaliser.’ Building upon this theoretical framework, the thesis proposes, investigates and answers the following research question: ‘How do social positionality and resource access affect UK women’s experiences of digital entrepreneurship’? Underpinned by a critical realist methodology and using thematic, retroductive and comparative case study analytical methods, a qualitative study of twenty-six women digital entrepreneurs was undertaken. -

On Their Own: The Single Woman, Feminism, and Self-Help in British Women’s Print Culture (1850-1900) by Melissa Walker A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English and Theatre Studies Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Melissa Walker, May, 2012 ABSTRACT ON THEIR OWN: THE SINGLE WOMAN, FEMINISM, AND SELF-HELP IN BRITISH WOMEN’S PRINT CULTURE (1850-1900) Melissa Walker Advisor University of Guelph, 2012 Susan Brown Cultural and historical accounts of self-help literature typically describe its development and focus in terms of the autonomous, public male subject of the nineteenth century. This literary study recognizes that as masculine self-help discourse became widely accessible in the mid nineteenth century, mid-Victorian feminist novels, periodicals, and tracts developed versions of self-help that disrupted the dominant cultural view that the single female was helpless and “redundant” if she did not become a wife and mother. I argue that the dual focus of Victorian self-help discourse on the ability to help oneself and others was attractive for Victorian feminist writers who needed to manipulate the terms of the domestic ideal of woman as influential helpmeet, if women’s independence and civic duty were to be made culturally palatable. Chapter One focuses on how Dinah Mulock Craik drew on self-help values popularized in mid-century articles and collective biographies by Samuel Smiles, while rejecting the genre of biography for its invasiveness into female lives. By imagining a deformed single artist heroine in the context of her 1851 bildungsroman, Olive, Craik highlighted and contested the objectification of women within Victorian culture while reproducing other forms of female difference based on dominant constructions of class, sexuality, and race. -
