2 3 FROM THE EDITOR...

lease bear with me while I dust off the slide rule I used to use Pat school to work out the cosine of 45 degrees etc. I need to work out the most efficient way of getting the family together for my birthday. What angle should I use for that in the plethora of new social rules that come and go with terrifying regularity. There are 9 of us that usually gather for these things. We can’t meet in our house/garden which would be the safest and most sensible thing to do but is against the law. We could go down the pub which is legal, but not really sensible. We could all go to Church, but sitting upright in pews each two metres apart (and not singing) is not conducive to a good party. We are travelling from the sensible to the legalistic just as the Pharisees did in Jesus’ day. Is it beyond the wit of the British people to be sensible, and not needing to be micro-managed by statutes? It’s your call, please write Tony Parker to us about it if you feel so inclined. Anyway. let’s not get into politics in this humble family magazine. Painter and Decorator Change is on the way, whatever that might entail, what with struggling Brexit negotiations, the plight of would-be migrants both in this country and in Greece, the sinking economy, the ever underlying issue of racism and so on and so on. QUICK Change happens, even in our little magazine. We are sorry to lose the services of Amy Lowe, who kept our loyal advertisers in RELIABLE order during recent times. She has a very active family and needs to devote more time to them. She has served us and the FULLY INSURED community well, and we wish her well for the future. Her place HONEST & is being taken by Emma Gibson (pictured) from Virginia Water, who is a young Mum with two very small children, but finds TRUSTWORTHY time to volunteer for a charity that supports parents with young children. She tells me she enjoys cooking, being with her family, For general enquiries or being out in the good fresh air, and is a wizard at spreadsheets! We welcome her with all our hearts. free estimates call We have also lost the services of Karen Kohn who, as deputy editor, did all the tiresome legwork for me, chasing people for copy and keeping them in order. She is wanting to Tony Parker concentrate on her professional career, and we wish her well in that. Fortunately she is on 07711 318527 married to Roger, who tirelessly puts the magazine together for us every month, dealing stoically with our last minute changes etc. and he will take over some of Karen’s duties. Karen has been with us ever since the magazine took on its present form of being free to everyone in the two parishes, so the loss of her expertise and long memory will be sorely missed. And we welcome Sarah Mortimer who will sometimes join our team as the voice of the Church, alternating with Stephen whose workload has been formidable these last few months. We published a short piece about Sarah last month, and very much welcome her contribution. And lastly a vote of thanks to you, our readers and advertisers, who have supported us throughout these peculiar days. On our part we will try to inform and entertain you to the very best of our ability. Mike Cross tel 01344 303991 mobile 07737 088423

I just wanted to share some lovely feedback I received about this month's parish magazine. One of my 'buddies' that I have been ringing through lockdown and beyond is Jane Bailey THERESE who is housebound and lives in Castleman House, having previously worshipped at All Souls PRUNET-BREWER for many years. I rang her yesterday and she was so thrilled with the magazine as the picture on the front is dated August 1925 – the exact month she was born! PAINTINGS CONSERVATION / RESTORATION Today I spoke to an elderly neighbour who said the same thing although she was born in Windsor, Berkshire February 1925 and she loved the memories that the list of events in Mike's editorial gave her. Both these 95-year-old ladies are housebound but thoroughly 'with it' and I thought you • Ex-Louvre paintings conservator would like to know how much pleasure the magazine brings to those who we don't see • Private clients, collections, around any more but are very much still part of our community. art dealers Well done all and thank you, • Contracted by museums and Ruth Bannerman galleries • 36+ years’ experience Dear Mike, • Accredited ICON Conservation UK We are all having to become used to a new world order caused by Covid-19 with no idea when or how it may end. An effective vaccine may or may not be on the horizon but don’t tel 07412 218216 hold your breath. I have taken the opportunity by being forced to spend more time at home email rather than globe-trotting, mainly to Africa, to take up new hobbies. [email protected] Firstly, learning to play the guitar. A couple of months before lockdown I bought a guitar at the Hospice Shop in Sunninghill for £5, Tim (former guitarist at All Souls) kindly restrung it for me and recommended a young musician called Dean to teach me how to use it. After a number of lessons initially face to face but since lockdown by Whatsapp video, I am becoming a little more proficient but at 72 and with no previous musical education it is not easy. I can now play and sing, but not in public, several hymns including ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful,’ ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ and my definite favourite ‘Amazing Grace.’ Last week I even wrote a protest song for Africa entitled ‘Please Mr President’, emphasising that lockdown makes life very difficult for 70% of citizens in Sub Saharan African who earn money to feed their family by begging or trading on the streets. Secondly since June 22nd I have been photographing butterflies. So far in only two months, I have ‘captured’ 27 of the 59 species found in the UK including the ‘Tortoiseshell,’ the ‘Adonis Blue,’ the ‘Brimstone’ and the ‘Scotch Argus.’ I have found it a great new hobby which involves seeing some of God’s amazing creations close up, using my little Leica pocket instamatic camera and staying fit. One of my favourite locations is Old Winchester Hill in Hampshire.
