He married Janet Armstrong daughter of William Armstrong and Agnes McCormack Freeman (?) on 30 January 1804 in Annan Dumfries-shire Scotland. Margaret Annison Roddick, son of James Roddick and Janet Armstrong, was born on 21 September 1804 in Annan Dumfriesshire. She married David Campbell, son of James Campbell and Janet Harkness in 1825 in Dumfries, Scotland. He was born in Hutton and Corrie, Dumfriesshire Scotland and died in Middlebie, Dumfries-sire on 18 November 1873. She died 24 Mar 1861 at Eaglesfield, Middlebie, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. Haplogroup Group H11a2a1

The author’s matrimonial line traces back to Grace Campbell. On February 29 2016, the maternal haplogroup for the author James Retson was identified as H11a2a1. As mitochondria DNA is only passed down through the mother's eggs, the following mother line would most likely bear the same haplogroup as would all individuals who can trace their mother's mother etc. up to one of theses women:
