    Place-names in and around the Fleet Valley ==== D ==== Daffin Daffin is a farm at the head of the Cleugh of Doon above Carsluith. There is a Daffin Tree marked on the 1st edition OS map at Killochy in Balmaclellan parish, and Daffin Hill in this location on current OS maps, across the Dee from Kenmure Castle; Castle Daffin is a hill in Parton parish and a house by Auchencairn. This is likely to be Gaelic *Dà pheiginn ‘two pennylands’. Peighinn is ‘a penny’, but in place-names it refers to a unit of land, based on yield rather than area. It probably originated in the Gaelic-Norse context of Argyll and the southern Hebrides, and was introduced into the south-west by the Gall- Ghàidheil (see Ardwell above). It occurs in place-names in Galloway and, especially, Carrick as ‘Pin- ‘ as first element, ‘-fin’ with ‘softened ‘ph’ after a numeral or other pre-positioned adjective. Originally a pennyland was a relatively small division of a davoch (dabhach, see Cullendoch above), but in the south-west places whose names contain this element appear in mediaeval records as holdings of relatively substantial landowners, comprising good extents of pasture, meadow and woodland as well as the arable core, and yielding much higher taxes than the pennylands further north. Indeed, peighinn may have come to be used more generally in the region for a fairly substantial estate without implying a specific valuation. *Dà pheiginn ‘two pennylands’ would, then, have been a large and productive landholding. However, a Scots origin is also possible, or if the origin was Gaelic, reinterpretation by Scots speakers is possible: daffin or daffen is a Scots word for ‘daffodil’, but as a verb, daffin(g) is ‘playing daft, larking about’.

    in Dumfries & Galloway 2011-12 We are once again delighted to present a varied and exciting series of workshops, lectures, concerts and conferences throughout this academic year. Everyone is warmly invited to attend and many events are free. This year, we are pleased to introduce the new Solway Centre for Environment & Culture, an important hub for research on the campus and throughout the region. To celebrate the development of this facility, we are offering several series of talks exploring the unique landscape and culture of south west Scotland. These include a four-part series on Landscape, Memory and Place and a conference in the planning, exploring our region as the Home of Environmental Art, in association with Wide Open. We look, too, across the Solway to explore Land and Sea, from the perspectives of Dumfries & Galloway and Cumbria. For those who appreciate the chance to explore a subject in more depth, we have popular lecturer Ann Karkalas exploring The City in Literature during a seven week course and Lionel Masters considering Pyramids of the New World, in Mexico and in Peru, over two days. Benjamin Franks’ half day course Three More Dangerous Ideas follows on from last year’s course. We welcome new speakers, too, from the University of Edinburgh and from our sister campus in Glasgow. With events running in Dumfries, Whithorn, New Galloway, Stranraer, Castle Douglas, Annan and Gatehouse of Fleet, as well as the popular Kirkmahoe Concerts, we hope you will find something to enjoy.     Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society (founded 1862) Merkland Kirkmahoe Dumfries DG1 1SY 12-03-2017 The Truckell Prize In 2009, the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society established The Truckell Prize, commemorating the late A.E. Truckell and his outstanding contribution to local studies in Dumfries and Galloway. The prize was open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from the Crichton Campus, Dumfries for a research paper on a human or natural history topic relating to the geographical area covered by the three former counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. In its first five years the prize has been awarded on two occasions. The Society has now revised the terms of the prize as follows: The prize is open to all-comers, (with the exception of previous winners of the prize) for an original, unpublished (and not submitted for consideration for publication elsewhere) research paper on a human or natural history topic relating to the geographical area covered by the three former counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. Entries, or earlier versions, which have been openly published in conventional print or on-line (in e-journals, blogs, etc.) will not be considered. Entries from researchers at an early stage in their careers are encouraged. Entries must meet the editorial standard required by these Transactions to qualify. The current Notes for Contributors are available on the Society’s website: www.dgnhas.org.uk. The winning paper must be made available for publication as an article in these Transactions. Copyright in the published paper will be held by the Society, and any other further publication of the paper must be approved by the Society.

    Moffat Academy Newsletter Summer 2019 Introduction Dear Parent/Carer Although the weather was certainly changeable over the holidays, I hope you all enjoyed this precious time with your children. The school is always very quiet when they are not in, so I was delighted to welcome them and the buzz they create last Wednesday. They all appear to have settled well and I am sure they will be enjoying getting to know their new teachers and making some new friends. We have enrolled a number of new pupils in our school and I would like to extend a warm welcome to them and their families. Exam Results Congratulations to all our senior pupils who received their exam results during the holidays. The examination picture across our entire senior phase was particularly strong. Our S4 pupils broke school records with 70% achieving 5 or more National 5 qualifications. Yet again, our statistics compare favourably with schools across the authority. There were some outstanding individual performances and these children should be commended. However, there are some pupils who may be feeling disappointed.
