Nicholson, curate, present at visitation (C. R. O. DRC/3/2, 22). 1574 John Austen ob. (Nicholson Mss. II, 3). AIKTON (Carlisle deanery) Rectory. Patronage held by Lord Dacre in 1563. By 1571 in hands of crown. 1535 John Robinson, prior of Lanercost (V. E. , V, 280). 1536 John Robinson has dispensation to hold Halton, York dioc. and Denton (q. v. ) as well (F. O. R. , 48). 1563 John Blythe ob. 1563 D. Will Lowden presented by Lord Dacre (Carl. Reg. 7). In 153 5 Will Lowthyan was a chaplain of the College of Kirk- oswald (V. E. , V, 291). He was receiving a pension as such in 1556 (P. R. O. E 164, vol.31, p. 7lv). 1571 Will Lowden presented by crown (Pat. Rolls, Eliz. , V, 1563). 1571 Sir. Will. Leacham (Lowder), late parson of Aikton, buried at Kirkoswald (P. R. O. E 178/3247). -412- 1572 Robert Alanby presented by Crown on Lewder's death (Carl. Reg. 46). 1574 Robt. Alanby not present at visitation (C. R. O. DRC/3/2, 24). AINSTABLE (Cumberland deanery) Vicarage. Rectory belonged to Priory of Armathwaite. In 1565 right of presentation held by Robert Dalston 'jure uxoris 1535 Richard Chynder (V. E. , V, 291). 1565 Thos. Rumney ob. (Carl. Reg., 20). 1565 D. John Priestman presented. 1571 John Priestman, vicar, charged 'that at Easter last he caused the sacramental wine to be ministered unto the people by John Lowder parish clerk there, being a layman without orders'. (C.R. O. DRC/3/1, 24). 1573 John Priestman, vicar (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 21). ARTHURET (Carlisle deanery) Vicarage. Rectory belonged to Abbey of Jedburgh. Patronage passed to crown, and in 1565 was exercised by Richard Grame of Netherby. 1535 Hugh Barker (V. E. , V, 278). He was chaplain of the chantry of St. Alban in Carlisle Cathedral. In 1547 aged 60 (P. R. O. E/301/11) was still receiving a pension in 1556 (P. R. O. E/164, vol. 31, f. 71v). 1550 Richard Kechyng had letters of presentation from crown (Pat. Rolls, Ed. VI, III, 203). -413- 1551 Roger Storye had letters of presentation from crown (Pat. Rolls, Ed. VI, IV, 72). 1565 John Bervise ob. (Carl. Reg. 19). 1565 Michael Frysell instituted. 1574 D. Michael Frysell present at visitation (C. R. O. DRC/3/2, 25). The Valor also has an entry for the Rectory of Arthuret, value 40s. , held by Robert James (V. E. , V, 279). There is no further reference to it. ASPATRIA (Allerdale deanery) Vicarage. Rectory belonged to Carlisle Priory. In 1557 the advowson was granted to the Earl of Northumberland (Pat. Rolls, Mary, IV, 179). 1535 John Irebye (V. E. , V, 284). 1547 Edward Machell LL.B, (als. Mitchell) occurs, chaplain to Bp. of Carlisle (F. O. R. , 300). He was also a prebend of Carlisle, and from 1561 rector of Rothbury (q. v. ). His will of Oct. 1565 mentions a curate in each parish (Durham, South Rd. , Wills I, 26; S. S. , 2, clxxxi; Carlisle Wills). 1565 Mgr. Anth. Thwaite S. T. P. instituted (Carl. Reg. 20). He had been recommended as a J. P. by Bp. Best in 1564 (Camden Misc. IX, 51). 1573 Anth. Thwaite present at visitation (C. R. O. DRC/3/2, 27). 1578 Anth. Thwaite, ob. (Carl. Reg., 96, 97). ALL-HALLOWS a chapel of Aspatria. Served by a curate (B. L. Harl. Ms. 594, f. 86). 1574 D. Robt. Thomson, curate, present at visitation (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 27). c.f. Beaumont. -414- BASSENTHWAITE (Allerdale deanery) In 1563 said to be a parsonage appropriated to the Cathedral of Carlisle, with one chapel of ease, served by two curates (B.L. Harl. Mss. 594, f. 86). 1574 D. Robt. Bowe, curate, excused attendance at visitation. D. Robt. Fysher, curate of the chapel there, present at visitation (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 26). BEAUMONT (Carlisle deanery) Rectory. Patronage seems to have belonged to Lord Dacre. 1535 Henry Berreman (als. Byreman). He was also chaplain to Lord Dacre and had a dispensation for non-residence for the pur• pose of study (V^E. , V, 280; F. O. R. , 15). Also held Penrith (q-v.). 1562 Robert Thompson deprived for refusal to subscribe (Carl. Reg. 5) There had been a chaplain of this name in the college of Kirkos- wals who was receiving a pension as such in 1548 and 1556 (P. R. O. , E 101/75/7; E 164, vol.31, f. 72). c. f . Allhallows (Aspatria). BEWCASTLE (Carlisle deanery) Rectory. Advowson belonged to the Priory and then the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. 1535 Thomas Aglyonby, a canon of Carlisle (V.E. V, 278). 1537 Thomas Aglyonby, als. Nickson occurs (F. O. R. 88). 1574 Aglyonby excused appearance at visitation (C.R. O. , DRC/3/2, 25). He died in 1581 (Nicholson Mss. , II, 67). c.f. Whitting- ham, Durh. dioc. and Kirkland. 1574 George Powrey, curate, did not appear at visitation (C.R. O. , DRC/3/2, 25). -415- BOLTON (Allerdale deanery) Rectory. Advowson belonged to Lord Latimer. In 1567 George Porter of Bolton presented, his claim to do so stemmed originally from Lord Latimer (Carl. Reg. , 18, 23). 1535 George Nevell S. T. P. (V. E. , V, 283). Son of Lord Richard Nevell, Lord Latimer. In 1540 he received a dispensation for plurality. He also held a living in Exeter dioc. , (F. O. R. , 224) as well as Morland in Westmorland and Salkeld (q. v. ) (Carl. Reg. , 23). In 1559 absent from visitation here (P. R. O. , S. P. 12/10, 162v), but in 1560 was licensed to hold benefices to the value of £200. From 1566 also held Rothbury, Durh. dioc. (q.v. ). Died in 1567 (Carl. Reg., 18, 23). 1568 D. Will. Turner presented (Carl. Reg., 23). 1574 Turner-present at visitation (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 26). BOWNESS (Carlisle deanery) Rectory. Advowson held by Lord Dacre. By 1572 had passed to crown. 1535 John Kendal (als. Robinson) (V. E. , V, 280). 1559 Mr. John Robinson not present at visitation (P. R. O. , S. P. 12/10, 162v). 1565 Mr. Will. Talentyre presented on death of last incumbent (Carl. Reg. , 20). In 1568 described as chaplain of Earl of Northumberland and received dispensation to hold two benefices (P. R. O. , S.P. 12/76, 43). Resigned in 1572. 1572 Mr. Anthony Key presented (Pat. Rolls, Eliz. , V, 1653). 1574 Anthony Key excused attendance at visitation. -416- 1574 Gerard Scott, curate, failed to appear (C. R. O. DRC/3/2, 25). BRAMPTON (Carlisle deanery) Vicarage. Rectory and advowson belonging to Priory of Laner- cost. Granted to Sir Thomas Dacre in 1552 (Pat. Rolls, Ed. VI, IV, 282-3. 1535 Robt. West, regular canon (V. E. , V, 278). 1565/6 Chris. Savill died (Carl. Reg. 21). 1566 D. John Rudd instituted (ibid. ) 1574 D. John Rudd present at visitation (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 25). BRIDEKIRK (Allerdale deanery) Vicarage. Rectory belonged to Gisburn Priory. Patronage exercised by crown in 1553 and Sir Robert Lamplugh in 1564. 1535 James Adcoke (V. E. , V, 285). 1553 George Elletson presented (Pat. Rolls, Mary I, 383). 1559 Will. Graye and Percival Wharton involved in dispute over cure. Wharton had been deprived at some time in Mary's reign for marriage (S. P. 12/10, 7l)c.f. Isel. He had been a chaplain in the chapel of Penrith Castle (P. R. O. E 164, vol.31, f. 71v). Graye was probably vicar from 1556-9. In 1556 he was ordained in Durham on a title given by Robert Lamplughe (S. S. 161, 310-1 1564 Wharton resigned. 1564 D. Will Robynson presented (Carl. Reg. 8). In 1571 he was charged with fornication (C. R. O. , DRC/3/1, 26). c.f. Holme Cult ram. 1574 Robynson present at visitation (C. R. O. , DRC/3/2, 27). -417- BROMFIELD (Allerdale deanery) Vicarage. Rectory belonged to St. Mary's Abbey, York. After the dissolution patronage exercised by bp. of Carlisle. 1535 John Clyfton (V. E. , V, 284). Will. Martyndale served chantry of St. George here (ibid. ). 1560/3 John King resigned.
