In presenting to their Subscribers and the Public " A Directory to Gentlemen's Seats, Villages, &c. in Scotland," the Publishers trust that their endeavour to make it worthy of public patronage has been effected ; and while they regret the long delay that has occurred, and which has been unavoidable, in order to secure accuracy, they hope that this, the first attempt to supply what has long been wanting, will be duly appreciated by the Nobility, Landed Proprietors, Bankers, Merchants, Men of Business, &c. &c., to all of whom it must be indispensable, as it will afford the utmost facility for the transmission of correspondence throughout Scotland, and at the same time be of unspeakable benefit for all mercantile purposes. The Post Office information, in regard to the despatch and arrival of the Mails, has been collected and arranged with the greatest care and attention, from official and private returns, and affords an opportunity of calculating exactly the return of Post from any place in Scotland. The Work, also, embodies the latest Post Office information, including the alterations upon foreign postages, which came into operation under the recent convention with France. From the circulation already secured for the work, the Publishers have much pleasure in being enabled (without any additional charge) to present their Subscribers with a Map of Scotland, engraved expressly for the work, at considerable expense. Then, opposite to the Month and Week, at the Foot of the Right-Hand Table, will be found a corre- sponding Letter, over which are placed the Days of the Month and Week for that Month, (distinguishing the Sundays by a different Type.) Each Blank Space in the Left Hand Table shows the year following to be Leap Year ; and as every Leap Year has two Dominical Letters, the Letter above the Blank Space must be used for January and February in every Leap Year, and for the other Months, use the Letters belonging to the respective Years. By transposing the Dominical Letters, this Calendar would answer for any Century. DIRECTORY OF GENTLEMEN'S SEATS, VILLAGES, &c. IN SCOTLAND. The Sub- Offices are in Italics. • Troutquest Guide to Trout Fishing on the Nc500
Version 1.2 anti-clockwise Roger Dowsett, TroutQuest www.troutquest.com Introduction If you are planning a North Coast 500 road trip and want to combine some fly fishing with sightseeing, you are in for a treat. The NC500 route passes over dozens of salmon rivers, and through some of the best wild brown trout fishing country in Europe. In general, the best trout fishing in the region will be found on lochs, as the feeding is generally richer there than in our rivers. Trout fishing on rivers is also less easy to find as most rivers are fished primarily for Atlantic salmon. Scope This guide is intended as an introduction to some of the main trout fishing areas that you may drive through or near, while touring on the NC500 route. For each of these areas, you will find links to further information, but please note, this is not a definitive list of all the trout fishing spots on the NC500. There is even more trout fishing available on the route than described here, particularly in the north and north-west, so if you see somewhere else ‘fishy’ on your trip, please enquire locally. Trout Fishing Areas on the North Coast 500 Route Page | 2 All Content ©TroutQuest 2017 Version 1.2 AC Licences, Permits & Methods The legal season for wild brown trout fishing in the UK runs from 15th March to 6th October, but most trout lochs and rivers in the Northern Highlands do not open until April, and in some cases the beginning of May. There is no close season for stocked rainbow trout fisheries which may be open earlier or later in the year.

  • Highland Perthshire Through the Archive
A Guide to the History and Culture of Highland Perthshire through the Archive Dick Fotheringham, bell ringer in the Aberfeldy area, c1930s Ref: MS316/31 Perth & Kinross Council Archive 1 Foreword While I have been a member of the Friends of Perth & Kinross Council Archive for some time I only became a Committee member last year. Thus my being asked to become the chair of the Committee at this year’s AGM was, from my perspective, rather rapid promotion! Now I have been given the great honour of writing this foreword to the Friends’ latest publication, a survey and guide to sources of information on every aspect of life in Highland Perthshire as encapsulated in the collections of the Archive. In it you will find a comprehensive overview of the huge range of collections relevant to this topic including history, genealogy, industry, settlements, estates and anything else you may be interested in. Some of the material is “official”, like local authority documents, police and Justice of the Peace records. However, there is also guidance on exploring community-based collections put together by local people who were determined their “story” would live on and be accessible to anyone who was interested. There are also many illustrations of documents of different types with informative notes beside each one. These are, of course, merely a glimpse of the rich and varied sources which exist and can be explored with the help of the staff of the Archive. A feature which we hope will be seen as innovative, and was the brainchild of the authors, is a specimen analysis of a document which is designed to show you what you can learn from it whether you are a family, house or local historian, or just interested in maximising the information that a document can provide.
